Matthew Sluka leaves UNLV: NIL collective denies offering $100K to QB, school calls demands 'implied threats'

UNLV and its NIL collective both released statements clarifying their stances on the Matthew Sluka saga

While the NCAA rarely comments on NIL matters, the usual and unexpected nature of this story prompted a statement from Tim Buckley, the group's senior vice president for external affairs.

"The NCAA fully supports college athletes profiting from their NIL, but unfortunately there is little oversight or accountability in the NIL space and far too often promises made to student-athletes are broken," the statement read. "Positive changes are underway at the NCAA to deliver more benefits to student-athletes but without clear legal authority granted by the courts or by Congress, the NCAA, conferences and schools have limited authority to regulate third parties involved in NIL transactions."

Just sayin': Well one side obviously isn't telling the truth; hell there's a good chance neither side is telling the truth. I guess it comes down to.....

The reality here is that neither side wins.

1) 3-0 UNLV loses it's starting QB; and the promising season could easily now go down the tubes.

2) The QB decides to sit out a year and try to get a better deal with another school in 2025. However, there is no guarantee that any school he would consider transferring to will offer the NIL package he expects. Regardless he pretty much (i.e. football wise) wasted a year of his life. Anyway he probably has these dates circled on his calendar:

The portal opens at the end of the regular season, the day after the College Football Playoff field and bowl games are announced. According to the NCAA, the portal will open for business Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, and closes Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025

So, the Dad is now saying that living expenses weren't being covered. That's how I know the dad is full of shit. Living expenses are part of the scholarship package and have been for long before NIL. UNLV is a poverty program, but they're not so much of one as to not cover scholarship athletes living expenses. I'm guessing one of two things: either the kid was told he was being yanked as the starter or the parents' agent sold them the line that he could get big time money for the kid.

That's totally possible. He had only thrown 1 INT but he was only completing 43% of his passes. I don't think anyone is paying big money for that, he was doing decent as a runner but not ground breaking enough to overcome being awful as a passer.

The backup if a FCS transfer as well, looking at just the stats he is the more accurate passer though.

If by “more accurate” you mean that he’s completed the only pass he’s thrown this year, then you’re absolutely right. That also happens to be true of the third string guy

Going off their stats at FCS. The backup has thrown zero passes at UNLV, the only other guys they've had throw a pass are a WR and the 3rd string QB.

the other possibility is that what the dad considers suitable “living expenses” (maybe he wants a high-roller suite in the bellagio) doesn’t match up with what the schollie limits allow or provide (room and board in the dorms).
