Underrated guitar players

And no disrespect, but Robert Johnson is pretty much regarded as the guitar god by people like Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend and Jimmy Page, so he is pretty highly regarded,

He's more of a 'blues' god... most of his guitar work can be played by a beginner... not to say it wasn't [relatively] groundbreaking and genius... but I tend to think you would have to put him under 'song writer' more than guitar legend.

You are right on, especially about Alex Lifeson. He is very underrated, come to think of it that whole band is underrated.
Underrated? Lee has been considered the best rock bassist forever, along with Steve Harris, and Peart has been considered the best drummer.

I have always personally thought of Rush as the best rock band when it come to instrumentals. YYZ is a perfect example.

I second Steve Vai

and Peart has been considered the best drummer.

Trouble in the Trees? Come the fuck on....

I mean, I love me some Red Barchetta... but jeez.

I like Rush, but I wouldn't call myself a junkie.
I like alot of bands. I just happen to think Peart is a great drummer.

I think to myself all the time.

If I had all of the money I spent on concerts, and t-shirts during my youth, I could retire by now

what is it with the Rush Junkies?

I am a 100%, full-fledged Rush junkie, and I got a tree that you're going to have some trouble with right here.... :wink2:

Dude, Rush does rule!!

Unfortunately, many of Rush's fans do not.....

did duane lose some weight? good for his fat ass. why the cane though duane, did you run and shatter your shins as a result?

as for guitarists i don't think he is under rated but maybe he is and since he hasn't been mentioned i might as well throw out his name. tom morello formerly of rage and now with audioslave is one of the best out there today. he can do lots of different styles and do somethings that very few people can replicate.

speaking of audioslave, i can second the motion on soundgardens kim thayil. is he doing anything now?

obviously a guy like hendrix isn't under rated at all, but most people have never heard his best work. find a copy of the band of gypsys (the 9 song single disc one, not the six song single disc or the double disc) and check out shit like who knows, machine gun, and hear my train a comin'. i have never played this disc for someone who wasn't blown away by who knows and the crazy ass vocal solo in it. of course all my friends were likely really fucked up and easily blown away. foxy lady, fire, and all that other radio popular hendrix can't hold a candle to the band of gypsys era hendrix.

Larry McCray - The Delta Hurricane
Roy Buchanon - R.I.P. Roy
Jim Hall - Mr. Smooth
Steve Vai - a Metalish Dude who is an accomplished classical guitarist, can play for Zappa? Wow!
Frank Zappa - Peaches n Regalia - My guitar wants to kill ya momma

I have a friend who is a big time guitar freak and used to be in a halfway decent band, and he claims that James Taylor, of all people, is a very technically advanced gutarist, whose acoustic stuff is actually very difficult to play.
Vernon Reid
Dimebag-R.I.P.
Joe Bonamassa-saw him at Gilly's in Dayton last spring-bad ass when he plays his own original stuff and gets away from the traditional blues stuff he also plays at his shows

I don't know about being underrated or anything, but here's some guys I at least think are pretty good.

Kyle Gass
John Frusciante/Hillel Slovak
The Edge
Tom Morello
Jack White

...And as for bass, I'll take Flea vs. the entire world!

Seriously Underrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Satriani and Tony MacAlpine.......Check out Tony's shit.....most people will drop a serious "F-BOMB" when they hear him play!!!!!!!

Also agree with Steve Vai and Frank Zappa.

Nice post.

David Gilmour on "The Wall" probably made his guitar "sing" as well as anything I've ever heard. He is my favorite.

A close #2 & #3 in no cetain order are Peter Frampton and Neil Schon. Went to see Journey's concert a few years back and the opening acts were Peter Frampton and John Waite. Alot of common bond was there between Journey and Waite, in that Jonathan Cain used to play with Waite in the "Baby's" years back. (I actually saw that concert too, Journey and The Baby's in 1980). Then, the two groups bonded together to form "Bad English" back in the mid 1980's, a group that totally rocked. Neil was dragged out of a club by Carlos Santana when Neil was 15 years old and began touring with Santana, THAT, for anyone let alone a 15 year old kid is quite impressive.

Frampton is simply Frampton, who possibly has the greatest "party" album of all time. Seriously, if you ever have a gathering and want to "rock" the neighborhood, put in "Frampton Comes Alive."
