Underrated guitar players

Just a thought, that some of the 'stage artists' are vastly underrated, or never had a chance to travel with a band. Many of those musicians make six figures just doing backgrounds. Nice work if you can do it.

For my favorite guitarist(s), I'd have to pick Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, and wait for it, Eddie Van Halen....I wish I had the ability to do some of the downloads you guys do, and you'd see.

Lindsay Buckingham was a great picker, but never wanted to travel, he just wanted to hang out in the recording studio......and he had an affair with Stevie Nicks, so he cannot be all bad.

I would not describe John Petrucci as underrated. He is fantastic!

There are so many session guitarists that are just fantastic. However, how many can you name off the top of your head?

Albert Lee
Steve Wariner
Marty Stuart
Glen Campbell
Steve Lukather
Huey Lewis' lead guitarist is really good.

Too many to mention.

Al Dimeola
John Scofield

Best I've heard. I spend my free time listening to guitar players, too.

He's the Wayne Gretzky of guitar players. So far ahead of everyone that it's not even funny.

Even within his own genres he's not "far ahead" of his guys like Di Meola, Eklundh or Firkins.

He doesn't do anything his mentor (Satch) can't do (and with more emotion).

When it comes to mastering the whammy bar Beck doesn't take a back seat.

When he tries to play more intuitive material (the Blues) the results are painful to listen to.

Steve Vai is a fantastic guitarist but no he is not the greatest guitar player on the planet.

There are guitarists who can do a specific technique better.. but he's pretty much great at all of them anyways. He has no weakness (other than making music I'd like to just listen to casually - but I'm just talking pure ability). I think he's the best. Probably just going to have to agree to disagree. :tongue2:

I have trouble sitting and listening to any of these guys casually. Most of the time it just sounds forced. Satch is better at making it musical, but it's still boring as hell for me to listen to.

I have a friend who is a big time guitar freak and used to be in a halfway decent band, and he claims that James Taylor, of all people, is a very technically advanced gutarist, whose acoustic stuff is actually very difficult to play.
Vernon Reid
Dimebag-R.I.P.
Joe Bonamassa-saw him at Gilly's in Dayton last spring-bad ass when he plays his own original stuff and gets away from the traditional blues stuff he also plays at his shows

Good calls by leek and stxbuck on Gary Moore and Vernon Reid. I saw Living Colour live several times when they were popular (twice at OSU- Newport and Mershon). Reid has a strange style that takes some listening to get used to or understand, but he shreds, and it's pretty technical- he's not just flying through a bunch of notes like a lot of other guys.

Never saw Moore, but I listened to him a lot. He's another one who can make the guitar sing.

Thought I would be the first to name Vernon Reid... search function is amazing (talking to you Scout)...
