UGA Expands recruiting presence/fanbase in Ohio

"Barkin' up the wrong tree"
At least by a factor of 1...

My lack of visability on BP in recent months is because I have received a promotion and have relocated to the Northern Cincinnati area. I finally have my head above water in my new position and have grown used to your frosty winters, neighborhood hot spots and the broad-chested women in this area.

My question is more educational in nature - so please move the thread to a better spot if need be.

My current managers are encouraging me to persue secondary education AND Ohio State seems to be an option. The educational reimbursement plan at this company is quite generous so I'd like to take advantage of it.

Without naming program specifics (I'd like to keep that private), can anyone comment on commuting 2/3 times a week for graduate level work to Columbus from Cincy?

Should I be exploring a more "online based learning" program and is Ohio State active in supporting commuter students.

Thanks for any feedback you can share! I'd really like to avoid spending double the money at Xavier and thus, taking twice as long to finish the program.

I used to live in Mason and my wife had a job near the Columbus airport. She did the commute once a week... drove up Monday AM, stayed overnight and came home on Tuesday night, worked from home the rest of the week. Totally doable.

I also used to live on the North side of Columbus and commute to Mason daily for a couple of months after a relocation... not fun but you can totally do it. I wouldn't want to do it, per se, if I had kids... but otherwise, for a year or two no biggie.

Good luck!

Somebody please bump the Urban Meyer/Tebow threads to keep Ubet occupied for the next 4 days so I can get some serious answers in this thread.

Thanks in advance.

Answer. Since you were dim enough to let everyone know that you have the opportunity to attend tOSU - any decision that leads to your going somewhere other than tOSU will be dealt with appropriately.

The abuse you will reap if you make that mistake, I can't imagine.

God have mercy on your soul....and govern yourself accordingly.

I live in Columbus and work in North Dayton, so I've driven the 63 miles on I-70 everyday to work and another 63 back home for the last 3+ years. I also have family in Liberty Township (West Chester, Mason area), and have family in Maineville (Kings Island area), and have made those drives many many times, and it's not that terrible regardless of whether you take I-71 to Columbus, or whether you take I-75 to I-675 to I-70. Depending on how close you live to an interstate, the drive takes about 1:40 to 1:50 with either route...just keep an eye on which one has the most construction going on at any given time.

The biggest thing is to make sure you're not making that drive during winter quarter. If you can get through your degree, in a reasonable amount of time, by going to school during the other three quarters, then do it. There have been many days over the last 3 years that I've either had to take the day off, or extend my commute from one hour each way to 3+ hours each way. That's no way to get through grad school if you ask me.

Kings Island is in Mason, other than that agree totally with the post :)

Congratulations on your promotion. When you say you relocated to "Northern" Cincy, does that mean you are outside Hamilton County, beyond the 275 loop - that might impact your decision making.

Program specifics are actually key to understanding where you might best apply.

I mean, if you are pursuing your dream to be the best Women's Lit reader in your new position then sure Miami of Ohio will be as good a choice as any.

If it is technical / Engineering work then UC would be a good compromise - but I bet it could take nearly as long a round trip (if you are living outside the 275 loop) to get to and from UC as it would to get to and from Ohio State.

Now, if your apartment / house is in Hamilton Cty, I'd first ask -- why? Then I'd suggest you get outside the 275 loop and place yourself so you can strategically take advantage of the shorter commute afforded by the I-75 and I-71 Northbound routes (the quickest connect from I-71 to I-75 beyond I-275 is around Lebanon).

Even if you were to live in the upper northern suburban reaches of the Cincy area, if it were me, I think I'd go crazy commuting from there to C-bus. It's about an hour 45 to get from Mason to tOSU campus area. That's just too far to go, 3x per week, for me.

I understand your reluctance to open up regarding graduate programs. For business, there may be better options around Cincy (maybe Xavier for MBA?). In technical areas, engineering specifically, there's really not much; I have respect for UC's undergraduate engineering programs but they don't have graduate degrees except aeronautical. Other more specialized areas (hydrogeology - Wright State is outstanding), you really need to look at the specific schools. But you knew that already.
