UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

Inter Milan also has the FIFA Club World Cup final this Saturday night at 11 PM EST on Fox Soccer Channel.

Inter will be playing TP Mazembe from the Congo. According to Wikipedia, this is the first time in the history of the tournament that the final won't be played between European and South American teams.

TP Mazembe upset Pachuca (Mexico) 1-0 and Internacional (Brazil) 2-0 in it's last two matches to reach the final.

I posted in this thread because of Inter's involvement, and because I figured that anyone that gave a shit about the FIFA Club World Cup could be found in this thread.

The worst part of being the Champions League winner is you have to play in this awful tournament. It is a total waste of time. No one actually watches it. Even when United played in it a few years back, I didn't watch the game, and I watch ever United game I can.

Today we have AC Milan at home versus Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the round of 16, starting at 2:00 eastern. I've got the DVR set, trying to avoid spoilers until I get home from work.

As for the match, I've got Milan winning 2-1 via a brace from Mr. Ibrahimovic (he's been playing stellar recently). Tottenham's goal, I'll guess, will come from Aaron Lenin on his own. I look for Ibra to get some great service from Robinho and Pato attacking Spur's weakened flanks (bad time for a cup tie for them). I think they'll look to keep in close and bank an away goal going back home with a (hopefully) healthy side at White Heart Lane.

Who do you guys think will take this one?

I have a bad feeling that the scoreline will be much less flattering than you. I could see Tottenham getting drilled on the road by a score of 3 to nil. At the same time, maybe they produce some inspired football and play to a 2 -2 draw with 2 away goals. I am just happy Champions League games are back.

I could easily see Milan pouring in goals as well, given Pato's explosion in the Champions League last year. If the Milan trio of Zlatan/Pato/Robinho ever can put together a cohesive strike force they are as dangerous an attacking side as there is in the world.

Tottenham's injuries (Bale and Vanderwart) really hamstring their attack in this leg. And if you let Milan get too comfortable in possession, the stars can really shine.

There should be bets on Gattuso's suspension.

Not that it honestly matters because he was already out of the Return Leg due to cards.

Barca - Gunners today.

RVP is on a hot streak, but it's Barca and not Wolves today. Should be fun watching Fabregas play his future teammates.

It could matter yet, if Milan finds a way to advance away from home. I would say he should be out the next two Champions League matches he finds himself in, whether that be in the quarterfinals this season or in the group stages next season.

Barca should outclass the Gunners if they are in top form. Villa's workrate (in comparison with Ibrahimovic' nonchalant approach) has made a huge difference in the squad, as has Iniestas healthy return. Having Nasri back will definitely help, but with the rushed return I wonder if he'll be 100%?

That's what they seem to be doing early on. Frustrating the Gunners, drawing cards, and passing them to sleep. Barcelona's passing is world class.

Well...my predictions have been pretty bad so far

Champions League is deadly hard to predict. Most of the top class teams can beat each other given the right breaks, tactics and desire. I wonder if we could see 4 English teams in the last 8 again this year? Barca have some work to do, but they have their away goal. AC Milan have a huge mountain to climb. The other 2 games that have been played are really just fodder for the bigger fish in this sea.

Surprised with Inter coming back against Bayern yesterday to win 3-2. That was a great game.

I expect Chelsea and Real Madrid to advance today.

That was the game of the knockout stage IMO. Chelsea looked like crap, Drogba played uninspired most of the game. Real Madrid closed out Lyon pretty well, and didn't need to rely on Ronaldo. Had scores from Marcelo, Benzema, and Di Maria.
