UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

Glad to see Milan advancing in the Champions League... Still hate them for their garage sale over the summer.

I read somewhere that Berlusconi was thinking about selling the club. I still can't believe they sold Silva & Ibra still, but I guess they were in a position where they had too. That turned the club back multiple years, because they were a serious contender for the UCL last season, although they unfortunately ran into Barcelona & the refs in the quarter-finals. I really thought they would be a strong contender again this season, but that was not to be after the selling was done.

At least your new boys, PSG, look somewhat formidable this season. I think they're a year or two away from seriously contending for the UCL, but they could yet make a splash this season if they get hot come next February.

I would post the videos of these, but UEFA is annal about copyrights & what not, thus, they would be removed in no time.

My stance has been, it's going to take a full season for TS-33 (even though he wears 2 now), Ibra, and Lavezzi to adjust to Ligue 1. But I honestly believe the UCL this season is more wide open than it's been in the last 3 or 4 years. Anything can happen, and it all comes down to the draw.

Totally agree with everything you said. In years past, there were a few clear favorites that more than likely would make the Final or at least the semi's. That is not the case this season as there are numerous teams that I could see making it far & winning it. United & Barcelona have dreadful defenses that could inevitably cost them in the end, Chelsea might be knocked out in group play & Bayern Munich have not impressed me at all.

Real Madrid was my favorite to win it all last year & they lost out on penalties in the semi's. I stayed with them as my pick this season after seeing them completely close the gap with Barcelona in Spain (Winning La Liga) last season. I was real confident after they destroyed Barca in the 1st half of the 2nd leg of the Spanish Super Cup, but then they completely fell apart at the beginning of the league season. I have to stay with my pick & I think the fact they've been knocked out the past two seasons in the semi's has them hungrier than ever to get over that hump. They played in a real tough group this year, which is why they didn't look that great at times, but I still think this is there year.

I really like this seasons knockout round possibilities. There's a few teams (Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk & PSG just to name a few) that I think can really beat some of the more recent powerhouses to grace this tournament. There's really no guarantees (As there never really are) for the bigger clubs this season as they've shown more weaknesses as in years past & this really opens up great opportunities for some of the clubs you wouldn't expect to make a big impact to do so. Can't wait for February.

Even though all of the Groups (A-D) in play today have already been decided, none of the group winners have been determined. PSG host Porto down a point & will look to finish top of the Group A with a win. Arsenal have the difficult task of heading to Olympiakos needing a win & a Schalke loss at Montpellier to top Group B. Malaga host Anderlecht needing only one point to top group C, while AC Milan host Zenit & need a significant victory & a Malaga loss to have any chance of winning the group. Very unlikely to happen, but not impossible. Malaga will probably take care of business like they have all season in this competition. Borussia Dortmund only need a point at home to Man City in order to top Group D, while Real Madrid need to beat Ajax at home & a Borussia Dortmund loss to Man City to top the group.

All in all I'm going to go with PSG beating Porto at home and winning Group A. Arsenal won't be able to get the job done at Olympiakos & finish 2nd in Group B, with Schalke topping the group. Malaga get the simple result they need and win Group C, with Milan finishing in 2nd. Borussia Dortmund take care of business at home to City & win Group D, with Real Madrid finishing 2nd.

Group A - 1. PSG 2. Porto
Group B - 1. Schalke 2. Arsenal
Group C - 1. Malaga 2. AC Milan
Group D - 1. Borussia Dortmund 2. Real Madrid

Half-time scores (Home team listed first):

Group A
Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 Dynamo Kiev (Match postponed in 30th minute - Snow)
PSG 1-1 Porto
All Porto need to win the group is hold onto this result, win or draw.

Group B
Montpellier 0-0 Schalke
Olympiakos 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal will win the group if these results hold. A draw will see them finish 2nd even if Schalke were to lose.

Group C
AC Milan 0-1 Zenit
Malaga 1-0 Anderlecht
Malaga will win the group if these results hold or if they just win or draw.

Group D
Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City
Real Madrid 2-0 Ajax
Borussia Dortmund will win the group if these results hold. All they need to do is at least draw.

Full time scores:

Group A
Dinamo Zagreb 0-1 Dynamo Kiev (Currently 78th minute, but meaningless game)
PSG 2-1 Porto
PSG win the group, while Porto finish 2nd.

Group B
Montpellier 1-1 Schalke
Olympiakos 2-1 Arsenal
Schalke win the group, Arsenal finish 2nd.

Group C
AC Milan 0-1 Zenit
Malaga 2-2 Anderlecht
Malaga win the group, AC Milan finish 2nd.

Group D
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Manchester City
Real Madrid 4-1 Ajax
Borussia Dortmund win the group, Real Madrid finish 2nd.

Group A - 1. PSG 2. Porto
Group B - 1. Schalke 2. Arsenal
Group C - 1. Malaga 2. AC Milan
Group D - 1. Borussia Dortmund 2. Real Madrid

This is setting up for a very intriguing round of 16 (As it always does). Sucks for whatever group winner draws Real Madrid.

Halftime scores (Home team listed first)

Group E
Chelsea 2-0 Nordsjaelland
Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 Juventus
Shakhtar Donetsk wins group & Juventus finishes 2nd if these results hold. Chelsea need Juventus to lose to have any chance of advancing.

Group F
Bayern Munich 1-0 BATE Borisov
Lille 0-1 Valencia
Bayern Munich wins the group & Valencia finishes 2nd if these results hold. Bayern Munich & Valencia are tied on points, but Bayern Munich have the tiebreaker on better head-to-head record.

Group G
Barcelona 0-0 Benfica
Celtic 1-1 Spartak Moscow
Barcelona has already won the group & Benfica would finish 2nd place if these results hold. Benfica & Celtic are tied on points, but Benfica has the tiebreaker of better head-to-head record.

Group H
Braga 1-0 Galatasaray
Manchester United 0-0 CFR Cluj
Manchester United have already won the group & CFR Cluj would finish 2nd if these results hold.

Keep in mind the tiebreakers for the Group stage are 1. Head to head points, 2. Head to head goal difference, 3. Away goals between tied teams, 4. Goal difference, 5. Goals scored, 6. UEFA co-effecient points.

Thus, why the two current teams tied on points (Bayern Munich-Valencia & Benfica-Celtic) are in the positions they currently face. Bayern Munich beat Valencia 2-1 the first game & tied 1-1 the 2nd, so that is why they would win the group & Valencia would finish 2nd if they finish tied on points. Benfica drew with Celtic 0-0 the first time & beat Celtic 2-1 in the 2nd match, so they would advance & Celtic would head to the Europa league if they finish tied on points after today's game.

Perhaps some good news for Celtic fans. Messi is being brought on with 30+ minutes left to play in his hunt for the world record of goals scored in a calendar year. No other reason to bring him on considering this game is meaningless to Barcelona because they've already won the group.

Might be too little too late for Chelsea. Juventus just went up 1-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk after an own goal. Chelsea have no chance to advance unless Juventus lose.

Very contentious penalty to Celtic & Commons smashes it off the bar and in the net. 2-1 Celtic, 83rd minute. Celtic will advance if these results hold as Benfica are being held 0-0 at Barcelona.
