U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

Kellyn Acosta fucking sucks. Thankfully with Shaq Moore performing extremely well, and several better options at holding mid spots, he won’t even be called up come WC Qualifiers.

I think I have given my opinion on Acosta here before, certainly indirectly at least. Dude has more than 180 MLS appearances, and is 25.

I see why people want to see things in him .. its there, he is really talented.

But he just plays with an alarming lack of urgency way too much of the time.

It may be too late to fix that.

He never looks confident at all when faced with a 1v1 situation. Need a good, aggressive type of fullback that has confidence to make a challenge and put an end to the attack. Sergiño Dest is obviously going to be your #1 RB, and Moore has been more than serviceable in this Gold Cup. And I’m not sure Acosta’s tentativeness would mesh well at all in the holding midfield. I see him as being an emergency backup if something were to happen to Dest or Moore moving forward beyond the Gold Cup.

Well, simply put, I think its this 3 in the back BS where he becomes ( in theory) an option in a few spots. Ironically its the Dest, Yedlin, Robinson.multiverse than makes wingbacks attractive I think. Which I further believe is contingency for scenarios where Adams is unavailable.

I think the 3 at the back was just an opportunity against a weaker opponent for Berhalter to maximize his scouting of the CBs he has available to him in this Cup. I think in a perfect world you have Brooks and Miazga as your primary CBs in your A-squad with Zimmerman and an additional guy as backup options. I also think the 4-2-3-1 is a more appropriate formation moving forward with much more talented CBs and fullbacks joining for WCQs.

Ideally, would love to see this for WCQs:

Steffen
Dest-Brooks-Miazga-Moore
Adams-McKennie
Musah-Reyna-Pulisic
Dike

And that leaves tons of depth options on the bench as well.

We're seeing 3 backs lot though, including against Mexico.

(And keep in mind there the substitute was Adams for Ream and move Acosta)

For the record what I would like to see is quite similar to what you would like... I just don't see where Berhalter is in on that plan as the only plan. He may well just be "gathering" information right now, but my tendency is to think that First, Berhalter sees what we all do, that there's no depth at the 6, second Dest scares him to death defending straight up, third, there's a big drop off in his mind after Long (which might be an indicator of his impression of Miazga)

One thing I would say is, with Adams and 4 backs you shouldn't need a double pivot there in the defensive midfield.

Maybe its just as simple as, if you have Adams and McKennie healthy you're gonna see a 4-3-3 (or riffs on that theme) and in that case Berhalter knows who that lineup is.. but if they're not both healthy its some 3 back look and maybe he doesn't know who those guys all are yet.
