U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

When will the new TV deal for the MLS really start taking effect? I'd love to see some more games on TV. Being in Cleveland it's rough since no Crew games get put on TV but I'd love to see some Portland or Seattle games on the tube
The Crew is on, they just have an exclusive with Time Warner. I wish they could/would have expanded that to hit all TVs in the region...soccer needs all the exposure it can get.

Ah, I've got Wide Open West here thankfully (hated TWC).

I get usually a couple games on NBC Sports and that's about it, and from what I understand the contract with NBC stops and FOX will take over, which I'm okay with since I imagine Fox Sports One or whatever it's called would be wise to piggy back off the attention on a network that desperately needs the hits. They could really be picking it up at just the right time.

Interesting to see how many on this list are NJ kids (Bradley, Bedoya, Altidore, couple more)
Howard was from Jersey too

MANY of these kids played for Caleb Porter on the U17 teams
and we could have a half dozen Akron Zips like Yedlin, Perry Kitchen, Serna, Nagbe on the 2018 team

Landon Donovan announced he is retiring at the end of this MLS season.

Not afraid to admit how sad I am to see it end. He is one of my favorite athletes of all-time. I grew up playing soccer during a time that he was far-and-away THE face of American soccer. I modeled my game after his. I watched him terrorize the Crew in the 2001 playoffs and later take home an MLS Cup in Crew Stadium. I have been a huge fan ever since.

As I said after not making the World Cup 23, it's crazy to watch both the emergence and retirement of a player, especially one I hold in such high regard. Glad to see him again be able to look beyond the soccer career and hope he's able to maintain a presence around the game going forward. So glad to have watched him wear the Stars and Stripes.

Just catching up on the USA/Czech friendly using NBC Live Extra. Yanks won 1-0.

Impressive stuff. Might be one of the better games the US have played on European soil. The team was comprised primarily Yanks abroad (non-MLS) players and it's hard for me to find fault with anyone in the match. Certainly some miscues and miskicks, but the team looked very in-sync and composed. Just a world of difference from Belgium. Great possession at times. The combos and creativity in working the field actually looked world-class.

Special call-outs:
John Brooks- this is the future center-back, what a great young talent. Tall central defender that can possess and distribute the ball
Fabian Johnson- another reason to think the US defense may be in good hands
Mix Diserud- played a great game in the midfield, Beckerman-like but shows a touch more natural talent
Joe Gyau- solid in the attack, needs better awareness to track back and defend on the outside, but a quick player
Julian Green- decent, some unspectacular play, but showed he belongs at this level, best young field player since Landon, can/should be the next star
Jozy Altidore- nothing special, but his work in holding play up top deserves a mention, better from him and maybe wearing the armband helped
Nick Rimando (MOTM)- the MLS shutout king came in and made 4-5 great saves. Outstanding.

2nd team after 6 subs lost some of that luster, but the first 11 + Rimando looked like the better squad.

John Anthony Brooks will be to the US what Pique is to Spain. I know that may not necessarily be the best comparison after Spain's recent performance, but Pique means more to that squad than just a center back.

Also, I'm still holding out hope Mix parts way with his Norwegian club at the end of the year (I believe his contract is up) and join the Columbus Crew. From what I heard about the negotiations, it seems they had a tentative agreement, and Diskerud's father backed out last minute. I still think a relationship has been established with him, and that's all I can hope for at this point.

Sorry to veer off-topic a bit. Just giving my 2 cents on Diskerud's future.

“My exchange of mails and text messages with Subotic has left no doubt that he doesn’t like playing for the national team,”Advocaat told a news conference. “That being the case, I think it’s best to keep players with such an attitude away from the squad to prevent them from disrupting the good atmosphere we have.

“Ljajic is a good player but he has a different mentality and I am looking for players with the right mentality. So far I’ve seen that almost everyone is happy to be in the squad and I have no need for players who don’t have a good feeling about the national team.”

Edit: For those who may not know or remember, Subotic moved to the U.S. when he was 11, went to IMG Academy and USF, and played for the U.S. U17 and U20 teams. He was in line to play at the 2007 U20 World Cup for the U.S., but Thomas Rongen left him out of the squad and said some mean things about him. Subotic bitched out and in 2008 decided to play for Serbia instead.

Of course, Serbia finished last in their group (behind Australia) at the 2010 World Cup, didn't qualify for Euro 2012, and didn't qualify for Brazil 2014.

I have heard rumors for some time now. That he has been vocal about how he made a mistake in not choosing the USMNT. At the time of his decision, Serbia looked like a team on the rise. Now they look to be a team in turmoil.

They are not going to win, mainly because they're going against FIFA (which makes up their own rules and is more-corrupt than the Olympics), but I do wish the Women's World Cup would get some sort of grass rather than turf.

Just for equality sake and it doesn't make FIFA look good (not that anything would make FIFA look good in today's climate).
