U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

I think Wondo will get the first goal for the U.S.

I don't think Taylor Twellman is that good, but he's a lot better than Eric Wynalda. A lot.

Obviously Jon Champion is a seasoned football commentator, so this is a bad comparison, but it's substantially better listening to him than Gus Johnson (it's more subtle). I think I agree with World Soccer Talk that this (last Saturday) is the best Gus will get.

@OHSportsFan I agree, he's quite belligerent out there. When he's not constantly turning it over taking on players, he's errantly blasting long-balls into who knows where. It could be worse though, it could be Ricardo Clark out there...

Oh those Ricardo Clark memories :smash:

Seriously. Had so much higher expectations for Jones when he came over. He's not a great passer, not a great dribbler, and he's a reckless defender. Think I have about 100 other complaints about him, but I just continue to not like him on field.

Never thought I'd say it but I'd rather have Beckerman out there. Not that I'd ever consider him a world-class talent, but at least he has a calming presence on the ball and on the pitch and plays simple (aka, get the ball to Bradley, the real playmaker).

What a disaster of a game 1 for the send-off*

Let's play in the windiest stadium in the country, on a narrow pitch and lets do it against a team that provides no semblance of what they will see in Brazil.

2010: Czech Republic (2-4 L), Turkey (2-1 W) and Australia (3-1 W)
2006: Morroco (0-1 L), Venezuela (2-0 W), and Latvia (1-0 W)
2002: Uruguay (2-1 W), Jamaica (5-0 W), and Netherlands (0-2 L)

The upcoming Turkey and Nigeria matches are much much better. Tonight just seems like a waste. Heck, the cycle may be shaping up to be a waste at this point. The damn jerseys included.

*Clearly hyperbole, but I'm grumpy and this did not give me any warm feelings. Off to bed.

edit- lol and like that Mix pounds it in (although in classic, ugly American set-play fashion).

Rather uneventful 2-0 win, but at least they got two late. The opponent was content in sitting back the entire time & since no one we will be facing will do the same, it just seems like a waste. At least no one got hurt during the game, although the Dempsey groin injury in pregame warmups could loom large if significant. Turkey & Nigeria should prove much tougher & worthy opponents.

Whatever happened to Freddy Adu? Wasn't he suppose to be the next coming of Pele or something? Did he flame out?

Pele? Not quite. He was supposed to be the next Landon Donovan, but he never really panned out. He spent a couple of seasons with SL Benfica (was then loaned out to three more teams) and AS Monaco, but only appeared in a handful of games in a 4 year span, scoring only 7 goals. He played most recently for the Philadelphia Union where he appeared in nearly 40 games scoring 7 goals. He is now currently playing for Brazilian club Bahia.

He was released from Bahia last year. Most recently he had a tryout with Blackpool, but they decided to not offer him a contract.
