U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

I think Donovan had tremendous potential filling the "Super Sub" role.
Throwing him in there in minute 65-70 and letting him run like crazy could have net some positive results.

My understanding is that the rest of the world doesn't carry many "sentimental" favorites on their 23 man rosters. If we hope to be equally competitive, we should hope we are as equally decisive when it comes to roster decisions.

I'm a huge Landon Donovan fan. He's honestly been one of my sports heroes, really since I saw him play in the 2001 MLS Cup for the Earthquake. Needless to say I am pretty crushed that he will not make it to Brazil. I had been preparing to see him in that US jersey one more time when I got down to Brazil in a few weeks.

Well, that's the shitty part. Having said that, I think that if you all go back and look when Klinsmann was announced as head coach, I probably wasn't too good at hiding my excitement.

I'll cop to owning a Germany Jersey*, and not a USA one. (Let's not confuse that for loyalties though)

Anyway, to bore you all to death, I remember well that world cup in Italy in 1990. I was rooting for the West Germans and Klinsmann and Rudoph Voller (that guy was dangerous from anywhere.) and the very funnily named - to me - Lothar Mattaus.... Toto Scillacci and Roberto Baggio for Italy... Romario for Brazil, Gary Linekar, Paul Gascogne... Marco Van Bastian for the Netherlands, and of course... Maradonna.

But you had Klinsmann coached by Franz Bechkenbauer, and it didn't get any cooler than that for me. I want to say all the games were on the USA network, or something... and we went over to my friends house who had a full sized goal in the back yard and we'd watch a game... and go play... and so on probably 5 or 7 days that tournament. I think I remember them putting the Ireland/England Match on Sicily so the the hooligans wouldn't destroy Italy proper.

But Klinsmann was my guy (note the overwhelming mentioning of strikers above in general), and to be honest, I was concerned he was going to come in for half the cycle and try to squeeze off a miracle semi-final or something. But he's trying, for better or worse to establish a culture and develop talent wherever he can find it... I'm obviously rooting for him and I think its for the best, so far. I hope he's here in 2018, I want to see the fruits of what he's trying to do. And I hope the next guy can build on the programmatic changes that he's implementing.

*To be fair, I'm not a wearer of sports jersey's and it was a gift. It joins the pantheon of all the other professional team sports jerseys that I can remember owning which to my recollection also includes a Cleveland Force Kai Haaskivi jersey and a rick manning era Cleveland Indians one. (Come to think of it I had one of those USA rugby shirts when Land's End made them, I still have it, that was well made stuff)

Donovan aside. If would be very different, I think. His missions is to build the program, and to him that means developing players he thinks will be around in '18 and he very good.

The other factor, I believe, is the draw. He's gonna need a near miracle to get out of the group, so expectations are low, and if a miracle is gonna happen he wants these young guys to have performed it. See program building.

I can see it both ways. I'm disappointed Donovan won't be there but I also see a lot of value in taking the longer view.
He can use the Gold Cup, Confederations Cup, Copa America, the friendlies, and the qualifiers against the Cayman Islands to develop players. The World Cup is the pinnacle of the sport and the U.S. will always need minor miracles to make a run regardless of who they draw. You bring your best horses and hope lightning strikes. Donovan is past his prime, but if they need a goal against Ghana with 10 minutes left, no sane person is putting money on Brad Davis or 18-year old Julian Green.

I think the sabbatical just irked Jurgen and he's still being a bitch about it.

And how is a qualifier against the Cayman Islands in anyway analogous to a World Cup Match against Portugal. Julian Green would be "oh look I'm better than a Cayman Islander" (Caymanite? Caymanese?). I don't think Cristiano Ronaldo plays for them.

Perhaps the point is getting over the hump where miracles are necessary.

Having said that, if Donavan is fit, I'd rather have him than not. (Edit: oh, see above)

Not sure how old this is, but judging by that gut I think he could have gone in at the 80th minute at best. He looks like me in that shirt.

 Funny how Bruce Arenas doesn't give a shit what Donovan does at this point, since he (with the help of Beckham and Keane) brought two MLS titles to LA.

He's going to turn into Ronaldo (Brazilian).

German roots here* and my sister picked up a jersey a few years back when she traveled to the Motherland. Needless to say it will be making the trip with me to Rio/Natal in a couple weeks, though my allegiance will be with the Red White and Blue when they square off.

*also Lebanese, but the Cedars have never been one to watch in FIFA

I remember one of the big points for Jurgen was the development of the junior program to more closely reflect that of the Europe structuring; does anyone know of the changes that have been made in the system for the developmental programs?

Last I heard he was pushing for a North American U-21 tournament. To better reflect with Europe's and South America's youth system's. Sports Illustrated wrote a small article on it about a month ago.

@WolverineMike correct. One of three buildup friendly games to the World Cup. Good news: Jon Champion is announcing. Bad news: Clint Dempsey was scratched due to a groin injury & the extent of damage not known yet. Hopefully nothing serious.
