mgoboard, growing weary of the army of 3*, reacts...

Does this mean we have no shot with the elite offensive lineman in state ??
Brown seems very unlikely since Wisconsin was his dream school and Wisconisn is good at the whole developing O lineman thing. Also seems very unlikely for Dobbs, for a bunch of reasons including a late offer and clear disdain for Michigan from Bellevile's coach
Yeah it would be surprising is we got either of the two 5 star tackles so it is what it is at this point, dissapointing but nothing you can do about it other than hope they play like shit when they play michigan.
As of now, based on 247, we're out of the running for all but 1 of the top 10 players in the state. Now I'm not sure if we've offered all top 10 in-state players scholarships yet or not....but we definitely aren't controlling the talent in our own backyard. Hopefully we'll be able to backfill these losses with out of state guys but that's usually a more difficult task than in-state guys.
I can't wait for the day when we don't need a 180 word explanation as to why we should be ok with a recruits ranking.....thought we would be there by now, honestly.
It's depressing that 2 of the top 3 OT in the class according to the 247 rankings that Ace posted are from MI (Brown & Dobbs) and we don't have either of them at a huge position of need. UGH
Exactly. We've been our own worst enemy for a LONG time. I'm ready for that to stop lol. Hopefully 2018 is the year.
For every 3* player that UM recruits Ohio State and Alabama will sign a 4* or 5* to their team. I do not think much of Harbaughs Recruiting.
Yeah the teams that usually can't get the top rated players are the ones who say that stars and rankings don't matter at all...and yet the top teams in the country always go after the 5 and 4 star guys and usually get them. Sorry but I believe that people like Saban, Meyer, Dabo, etc. know more about recruiting then the fan bases. There's a reason that top teams don't pick up a bunch of low-ranked kids. To try and say that recruiting rankings are all bogus is just denial when your team isn't able to recruit top talent.

Humorously, Warriner wasn’t a great recruiter even with Meyer leading the charge, so it’s not looking like he’s going to be much help in that department.
I think Warriner is a good OL coach. However, I think some of his success here as an O-line coach can be attributed to scheme. Playing OL is a lot easier when you're operating in a dynamic, complex offense. Those are two adjectives that haven't been used to describe anything to come out of that shit hole in a very, very long time.

Judging by the offensive lineman Ohio State has put in the league lately I'm going to agree to disagree with you. Ohio State had talent on the offensive line.

I realize this is a tangent and no one is actually arguing about Warriner’s recruiting, but to get back to that for a moment-

2012

Taylor Decker (Natl 170)- huge flip from ND that worked out wonderfully

Kyle Dodson (Natl 200)- bust/left program

Joey O’Connor (Natl 271) - bust/transfer

Jacoby Boren (Natl 578) - worked magic on his development, but I don’t think Warinner gets full credit for identifying and recruiting him as an under-the-radar prospect

Pat Elflein (Natl 998) - same story as Boren

2013

Evan Lisle (Natl 75) - cracked the two deep at guard, but underwhelming results to say the least for a top 100 prospect and transferred (seems like he’s having a decent career for Duke at RT, though)

Billy Price (Natl 211) - worked magic on his development, but once again I don’t know how much credit Warriner gets for identifying him as a prospect and recruiting him considering he came in as a defensive prospect

Timothy Gardner (Natl 652) - a baffling reach from the very start who never ended up enrolling

2014

Jamarco Jones (Natl 59) - definitely a success all around for Warriner, well done

Demetrius Knox (Natl 98) - a huge recruiting win at the time who is just now living up to his potential well after Warriner left (so an odd recruiting win but development failure for Warriner, although that is probably more on Knox than him)

Kyle Trout (Natl 265) - I think maybe he cracked the two-deep at some point? not a plus for Warriner either way and transferred

Marcelys Jones (Natl 400) - bust/transfer

Brady Taylor (Natl 584) - back up who will get his chance to start as a 5th year senior due to his experience, but has Myers pushing him - I guess you can give Warriner partial credit here?

2015

Isaiah Prince (Natl 101) - a recruiting success and multi year starter, good job Warriner

Matthew Burrell (Natl 110) - a recruiting success that never developed and just transferred

Grant Schmidt (Natl 469) - bust/transfer

Kevin Feder (Natl 507) - bust/transfer

Branden Bowen (Natl 573) - a rare under-the-radar recruiting success for Warriner who developed into a starting RG before the season ending injury last year

Joshua Alabi (Natl 555) - Warriner didn’t have much to do with Alabi one way or the other, I don’t think (didn’t recruit him as a DL prospect, didn’t develop him because I don’t think he moved to OT until after Warriner left)

2016

Michael Jordan (Natl 130) - recruiting success forced to start as a true freshman at LG due to misses elsewhere on this list

Malcolm Pridgeon (JUCO) - brought in to start at tackle but is still struggling to maybe provide depth at guard, part of the problem has been injuries, but still not a plus for Warriner here in my opinion

Tyler Gerald (Natl 164) - bust/transfer

Gavin Cupp (Natl 413) - to be determined but not looking great so far

Jack Wohlabaugh (Natl 437) - bust/transfer

Warriner was great at developing certain guys, but in terms of identifying the right people and recruiting them, his results were mixed to bad.

Depth was always an issue on the OL with Warriner that we are just now working our way out of.

Bottom line, Warriner isnt some guru at picking and developing under-the-radar guys- he got lucky with Elflein, Boren, and Price early on at Ohio State and basically has nothing but misses with diamonds in the rough since then.

Good luck with that up north under the overall bad recruiting effort being led by Harbaugh.

Again, I'm not saying Warriner isn't a good to very-good OL coach. I said he is. However, I think Tom Herman's schemes had a lot to do with how strong the OL was in 2013-14. Notice how OL play seemed to dip a bit in 2015-16 as the offense became a little more (relatively) vanilla. I have little doubt that he will have their OL performing better up there this season. It'll be almost impossible not to; but if they think he's gonna turn their outfit into the 2014 slobs, with the very "meh" offense they run, they're sorely mistaken.
