ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2015 official thread)

Ann Arbor HS

I call BS on that. They shouldn't be allowed to count those wins.

Case Institute of Technology
Western Reserve

Case Institute of Technology beat Ohio State 10 times. (Lost 11, tied 2)
Western Reserve beat Ohio State 6 times. (Lost 5, tied 1)
http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/bigten/ohio_state/opponents.php

Michigan is/was 26-0-1 against Case, and 3-0 against Western Reserve. I think if we want to discount Michigan's 29 wins there, we should have a lot fewer than 16 losses against those teams.

However, I agree that Michigan fans are quite annoying that they talk about all these wins that they got before their oldest fans were born. Put a reasonable lower bound (i.e. since World War I, or since the Declaration of Independence was signed) on the series and their record is much less respectable.

Michigan was supposed to be the "national" power in what was called football back then. Ohio State was not much more than a club team its first 30 or so years of existence. Also, since the inception of the forward pass in 1906, Michigan's winning percentage went from .807 (152-34-6) pre-1906 to .714 (762-296-32) from 1906 to present, a drop of .093, which is huge. Conversely, Ohio State went from .588 (81-55-12) pre-1906 to .738 (782-264-42) from 1906 to present, a stunning increase of .150. So, since 1906 Ohio State's winning percentage trumps Michigan's .738 to .714, or a difference of .024, which over nearly 110 seasons is statistically significant.

The reason they're the "winningest" team of all-time is that they played [Mark May] teams for their first several decades of existence. Here's a sampling of the high school, athletic club, and military unit teams they played:

Albion, American Medical, Ann Arbor HS, Beloit, Camp Grant, Carlisle Indian School, Carroll, Case Institute of Technology, Chicago Harvard Club, Cleveland AA, Detroit, Detroit AC, Detroit Independents AC, Drake, Ferris St, Grand Rapids HS, Great Lakes NTS, Hillsdale, Iowa Navy Pre-Flight, Kalamazoo, Kenyon, Lake Forest, Lake Forest/Rush Medical, Lawrence, Michigan AA, Michigan Alumni, Michigan Military Academy, Ohio Wesleyan, Olivet, Peninsular Club, Physicians & Surgeons, Quantico Marines, Racine, Stevens Tech, University Club of Chicago, Wabash, Wesleyan, Western Reserve, Windsor Club.

The vast majority of these were played in the 1800s and early 1900s.
People say this jokingly.....but there are seriously high schools in that list. I just want people to understand what all those wins before 1900 really mean.

Before we keep downplaying MSU like they are not a threat...

We should stop, and realize we sound like delusional OSU/MSU fans who think Harbaugh is not going to rejuvenate our program.

Just searching that web page for the letters "HS" gives the following two results: Ann Arbor HS (MI) and Grand Rapids HS (MI). (Same two that are on Mili's list.) So, yes, "high schools" (plural) is correct. Michigan is 1-0 against each of those teams. I understand that that was something that colleges did over 100 years ago, and don't fault Michigan for doing that. But they shouldn't be allowed to count those two wins (and any other wins against high schools) as a part of their "most wins of all time" garbage.

Also, to be fair, Michigan is 0-1 against Cleveland AA. So not only did they schedule Cleveland AA, but they couldn't even beat Cleveland AA. They can keep all those wins, if they want. But their "all-time wins" junk is weak. Find me someone who remembers their last national championship that wasn't shared with Nebraska. I'd bet there are more people who don't remember it than do.

You will have to hike it on down to the old folks home because that person would have to be over 80 to have any memory of it (ironic that to be old enough to remember scUM's last full NC you have to be at an age where your memory is probably failing).

Just you people remember, when I graduated from Michigan in 1923, we were 15-3-2 against you and had outscored you by a combined 423-62 in all games played to that point. Nearly half of that 62 came in two games!

Finally... Scoreboard, Bitch!
86 NOTHING in 1902. Ha!

Shouldn't you be celebrating the big win over Truman?

Oh wait

Legit compared to what? It just shows that counting wins from that timeframe just to pad your status as the "winningest" team of all time is weak at best (yeah, Ohio State also played some of those teams, including Carlisle Indian School and Carlisle Indian School). You mention Drake, Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan as being legit back then, but unless Ohio State was already a national powerhouse near the turn of the 20th century I'd disagree, since Ohio State went 17-6 against Kenyon and 26-2-1 against Ohio Wesleyan, and the one game we played against Drake we won 85-7. And we didn't play any high school teams, either (we did play one game against a YMCA team from Dayton in 1892). Granted, available opposition was somewhat limited, but Michigan made more of a habit of playing non-college teams.
I think if it's an actual college that they played then it is legit. There weren't separate divisions back then, so any college teams they played, no matter how bad, are legitimate opponents.
