Interesting. I don't read books. (I barely know how to read.) Maybe I'll try that one out.
Are you saying that Paterno's name should go back onto the Big Ten Champions' trophy, in place of Stagg? Or should it just be nameless?
I'm saying history has been kind to Stagg. He stopped winning when the new president of Chicago required members of the football team to be a) eligible for enrollment and b) required to be "real" students in terms of grades and credits. Hutchins fired him as soon as he could find good reason. Wayne Woodrow Hayes comes to mind as someone who actually worked as a professor as well as coach. That would be a nice reason to name a trophy.

It's fairly well established graduates from the east coast powers came to Michigan (and Chicago) to continue playing during their periods of football dominance.

The reasons for completely throwing out the results from those years abound; or people can choose to thump their chests about it like complete jackasses.

The reason they're the "winningest" team of all-time is that they played [Mark May] teams for their first several decades of existence. Here's a sampling of the high school, athletic club, and military unit teams they played:

Albion, American Medical, Ann Arbor HS, Beloit, Camp Grant, Carlisle Indian School, Carroll, Case Institute of Technology, Chicago Harvard Club, Cleveland AA, Detroit, Detroit AC, Detroit Independents AC, Drake, Ferris St, Grand Rapids HS, Great Lakes NTS, Hillsdale, Iowa Navy Pre-Flight, Kalamazoo, Kenyon, Lake Forest, Lake Forest/Rush Medical, Lawrence, Michigan AA, Michigan Alumni, Michigan Military Academy, Ohio Wesleyan, Olivet, Peninsular Club, Physicians & Surgeons, Quantico Marines, Racine, Stevens Tech, University Club of Chicago, Wabash, Wesleyan, Western Reserve, Windsor Club.

The vast majority of these were played in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Iowa Pre-Flight played 3 seasons between 1942-1944, posting a 26-5 record, and records of 1-1 against both Ohio State and Michigan. Not sure they belong on your list, other than most people think the name is silly now that they don't remember that far back.

Like the Ohio State and Michigan teams weren't decimated by having players get called to duty...

Iowa Pre-Flight was good. In 1943 they finished #2 in the nation and in 1944 they ended up 6th. This wasn't a collection, necessarily, of servicemen similar to what we might find today at Army, Navy, or Air Force. Indeed, Iowa Pre-Flight's roster featured former college all-stars who had played for Michigan, Texas, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio State. They're certainly were not the same as Grand Rapids High School and counting a win against them should be considered, in my opinion, a legitimate win against a legitimate team. Likewise, a loss to them should not be considered a point of shame.

I checked their wiki page, which says (bold is mine), "Numerous collegiate and professional athletes and coaches were recruited as instructors. They often played on or coached the football team of their respective school." It also states that Ohio State stomped them 41-12 in 1942. Even in 1942, most colleges had lost significant portions of their roster to the draft. Maybe IPF wasn't a patsy team, but I think they get a little more credit than do as far as on-field results go. I'm pretty sure that if an IPF team played the 1947 or 1948 Michigan team which had a replenished roster, they probably would not have fared nearly as well as when they played at depleted Michigan team in 1942 and 1944.

Michigan still sucks, regardless...

And there's another reason to question Michigan's record. Ohio State's team was decimated, but Michigan was a different story. UM became the post for a special officer training program that pulled in more than 12,000 male students. One part of this was a Navy program called V-12. As a result, Wisconsin star Elroy Hirsch, who was accepted into the V-12 program, ended up playing two seasons, 43 and 44 for Michigan.

Just had an interesting thought. Maybe this should be in the philosophical thoughts forum, but what if M*ch*g*n never existed?

Food would certainly taste better.
People would definitely be friendlier.
Spring would be springier.
There'd be peace in the Middle East.
We wouldn't be dealing with global warming, ebola or famine.

Imagine there was no M*ch*g*n, its easy if you try.
No Hell north of us. Only Canadians would be nice.

You may say I'm a dreamer....but I'm not the only one.

And GM wouldn't be trying to kill us.
