Just got home to Colorado from a great long weekend, except for the game outcome, that is. Ate at Schmidts and Adriaticos and visited family all over the place and showed my son and his wife some of the old haunting grounds. My son and I sat in 20C and saw maybe the worst fan I have ever seen in my life. Giant dude, maybe in his 40s, was melting down cussing up a blue storm, all this while surrounded by families. Screaming at the refs on every call, flipping double birds, wishing the motherfuckers to die in a fire and he was going to hunt them down and kill their families. Same thing for the coaches and players. He was far enough away that I couldn't hear every word, but finally his wife just got up and left, and then the people around him started to get in his face. They finally called security and his friend drug him out before security arrived, while he pointed his finger and yelled threats at the other fans. What a joyful day for all involved. I wish this was an extremely isolated incident, but I'm guessing this played out all over the stadium. Then when I visited my niece and her family, her husband, who is a sheriff's deputy, told me that he spent all Saturday night responding to death threats on the coaching staff. Aye yai yai. He said domestic violence calls go up after any Buckeye loss, which I guess I knew, but he confirmed it. I don't know if we are any better or worse than any other fan base, but it feels like we are on the wrong side of the spectrum. One of the symptoms of a successful program. All this over watching a bunch of 19-year-olds playing a game. Dammit.

tldr: Nice trip "home", but many buckeye fans suck.
Years ago my sister and I talked my tea tottler, book of the month club, librarian wife into going to a Cardinals game when they were still playing at Sun Devil Stadium. She had never been to a sporting event in her life and we assured her that everyone generally behaves. Just so happened we got a guy just like that not too far from us and midway through the 2nd quarter a fight broke out. My wife wanted to leave but all participants were escorted out and things calmed down. Years later when the Cardinals were in the super bowl some of her friends and coworkers came to watch the game at our house. I don't remember why our house was chosen. It was the first time she had ever say down to watch any game of any kind on TV. Turned out our neighbors were having a super bowl party too and they were getting pretty drunk and loud by the 2nd half. There was one or two Steeler fans there and after Santonio Holmes caught that pass to win the game a near riot broke out which spilled into the park across the street. Since then there have been no more sports parties of any kind anywhere near our home.

If a heathy Hayden starts we win. I rewatched some of the first half. Not putting down Trayanum, but there were big holes that I firmly believe Hayden would have had massive chunk plays with. If he was hurt then I am happy Day kept him on the bench. Its going to be a mystery forever why he didn't get more carries after he was dominate the week before.
Right. Just that one change ensures that he hits every hole (and that every hole you thought you saw on replay was actually there), makes the receivers catch every pass, eliminates all the penalties, and fixes the defense. It’s easy to make that claim because it’s impossible to prove or disprove one way or the other. But that’s a typical fan reaction. It’s just one thing. Fix that and everything turns out differently.

It’s never just one thing. And btw Hayden averaged 5.4 yds/carry at Maryland so a half yd less per carry than Trayanum did against Michigan. It’s impossible to know what would’ve happened if Hayden got more carries but to insist that starting him would’ve made the difference between losing and winning is just silly.

Yea, Hayden isnt doing much better at best than Trayanum if he was in when Day decided to abandon what was working and started run exclusively those stupid pitch plays and other slower developing outside runs.

I don’t know why Hayden didn’t get more carries. Didn’t Day say something about ball security? Maybe he was just afraid of a freshman mistake or maybe Hayden was fumbling in practice but his play against Maryland earned him the chance to show what he could do against Michigan. I’m not aware of any injury issue.

That said, Trayanum did a fine job out there. He averaged 5.9 yds/carry. Hayden only got 2 carries, one for 5 yds and one for 2. That’s too small a sample size to say what would’ve happened if he’d gotten the ball more. But Trayanum wasn’t the problem. And on that one play, I forget whether it was 3rd or 4th and short, when they ran a stretch run and he couldn’t get to the corner, there’s no reason to think Hayden would’ve gotten there faster. He’s not a speedster either.

I don’t know why they ran that play. I don’t know why they can’t just power forward for a yard or two when they need it. Is Justin Frye not pulling his weight? Is it the scheme? Or is it the talent?

I miss Dave.

Thank you, I was curious. I don't think Chip was at all the problem, but I don't think think he's the answer at all in a big game when he converted from LB middle of the season and had way less carries than Hayden...plus Hayden was such a hot hand that I would have given him more carries than Henderson and Miyan if they were fully healthy.

Undoubtedly we had larger issues than that, but that one festered away at me because it seemed like a clear error where the coaches got too cute thinking they'd surprise ttun by rolling out Chip rather than give it to your guy that is on fire. A guy with almost no carries this year I would worry about ball security more than Hayden, who's carried the rock a ton this year in live games without the ball so much as moving in his grip let alone fumbling.

I need to go back and just watch it, but I still can't do it having watched it live. I want a shot back at them in the playoffs so bad I can't even describe it, though I don't even think that would fully redeem a loss in the Shoe with how our fans showed up for that.

Chip did fine. The biggest problem was that our line was opening big holes early on but with Miyan's injury, he just didn't have a quick enough burst off the line to make the most of them. I honestly think with his burst, Hayden takes a couple of those 5-6 yard gains and turns them into 25-30 yard runs. The lanes were there, Miyan just didn't have the footspeed on Saturday to get through them before they started to close.

We were dominating the first half. On both lines of scrimmage. Should have been up 3 scores at half.

I do believe our guys can't play a 4 quarter game because of all the blowouts.
