ttun News (2016 version)

Doesn't seem all that improbable.

I've even been pretty successful handling a three-way.

What does a plate of food have to do with that? Did you just need the extra energy? :biggrin2:

This is fun. I came for the pie in the sky spin on their QBs, I stayed for the spin on the entire team.

Well then, if some publication I've never heard of says it...

Michigan will have a fine defense this year, but similar to last season, they're a few injuries away from falling apart against halfway decent offenses like Indiana, much less against an elite team.

They return arguably the best receiving corps in the Big Ten with Jehu Chesson, Amara Darboh, and Jake Butt.

These are the holdovers from the "speed is overrated" era, no? The guys who scared defenses so much that Peppers was brought over in a desperate attempt to make defenses think about some weapon, any weapon on that offense (not named Butt) for more than five seconds during their scouting.

First example of the "highly mediocre + 3 years = great" fallacy.

They return their top three ball carriers from last season. And they return four starters on the offensive line that have combined for a whopping 102 starts.

Second and third example of the "highly mediocre + 3 years = great" fallacy.

On to the quarterbacks. First some groundwork.

First, Rudock’s transformation is yet another data point in a mountain of evidence which suggests that Harbaugh is one of the best quarterback coaches.

Have no fear that our talent is garbage, Harbaugh is the QB whisperer.

The proof of this?

he picked apart three top-10 pass defenses in a row from Penn State (8th), Ohio State (4th), and Florida (7th)

25/38 256 yards 2 TDs 1 int
19/32 263 yards 1 TD 0 int
20/31 278 yards 3 TDs 0 int

seems pretty average to me, but to each their own.

Yet, once Rudock became acclimated to Harbaugh’s offense and playbook, he flourished and put together one of the best stretches by a Michigan quarterback ever. Now imagine how much a quarterback that has spent the past 18-plus months under Harbaugh’s guidance may develop. Suddenly, the idea of replacing Rudock doesn’t seem as daunting as it should.

Oh... alright then.

Oh yeah, and to highlight my point about the defense earlier-

However, when injuries on the defensive line took their toll and run-first spread offenses wore them down
Not addressed; why this depth problem will not be exactly the same this year.

But anyways, I digress.

I think we've sufficiently laid the ground work for why we don't need to worry about their hot garbage talent.

1. Their defense, which totally doesn't have depth issues which totally won't become glaring at the end of the season in exactly the same way they did last season.
2. Their highly mediocre returning talent on offense that is so good they aren't desperate for Peppers to make an impact.
3. Harbaugh is the QB whisperer who turned competent Rudock into a competent passer last season.

Let's get to the talent!

Lots of words on O'Korn before the main takeaway:

However, O’Korn hasn’t secured the starting job like many thought he would.

And this gem.

Whereas Rudock was known as a game manager, O’Korn is more of a gunslinger. He has great arm strength and does not hesitate in trying to squeeze in a tight throw. With weapons like Jehu Chesson, Amara Darboh, and Jake Butt at his disposal, O’Korn would test defenses deep frequently, which could lead to lots of fireworks for Michigan’s offense.
Oh, you mean the "speed is overrated" guys and the TE? Yeah, that just screams gunslinging it deep fireworks to me.

But wait, he makes bad decisions and he's erratic!

The downsides, though, are that O’Korn can be too loose with his decision-making, taking too many risky shots down the field and fleeing the pocket too quickly once he starts feeling pressure. And these mistakes cost him dearly when he faced better defenses at Houston.

But don't worry, Michigan doesn't need a QB good enough to start at Houston.

Has O’Korn learned from this? It remains to be seen. However, Michigan doesn’t need a quarterback that shoulders much of the burden of the offense. It just needs a quarterback that can move the chains and limit mistakes.
So they just need the guy who transferred from Houston because he made an outrageous number of mistakes to not make mistakes? Seems reasonable. Playoffs here they come!

If O’Korn wins the competition, it likely means that he has learned to be more in control and make better decisions.

Yes, that is the only likely reason why he would be named the starter. Not because his competition is absolutely putrid.

What a perfect transition to Wilton!

One reason that John O’Korn hasn’t secured the starting spot yet is Wilton Speight, a former three-star propsect who isn’t supposed to be truly competing for the job this season.
Wait, I'm confused, this is an optimistic review, right?

Oh yeah, I forgot, Michigan doesn't even need a good QB to make the playoffs this season.

Now it becomes a matter of whether Speight can prove his doubters wrong again and be Michigan’s starter in 2016. He and O’Korn were neck and neck entering training camp this fall. Whereas O’Korn has the upside, Speight is more of the mold of the game manager that fits what Michigan needs this season.
O'Korn maybe might have some upside, whereas Speight has none, which is perfect because Michigan needs their QB to not be good this year. Playoffs!

It seems that the Michigan staff is looking for a balance between what each of Speight and O’Korn provide. They want O’Korn to be a bit more conservative and Speight to be a bit more of a playmaker. Whichever quarterback can find that balance the best will be Michigan’s starter come September 3rd. However, if neither of them can find it, do not be surprised if Harbaugh and Michigan go with Speight and choose control over upside.
Staff is looking for someone, anyone, to stop doing the things that make them a bad QB. What an optimistic final sentence. Playoffs!

Another comment on the "speed is over rated" era wide outs that are still on the roster.....

If I read correctly, not only are they still going to rely on Peppers playing both ways, now they're going to use Lewis too. So, if I'm reading correctly, then, two the best options for them offensively is to use guys who don't even play offense full time. :golf clap:

In defense of Darboh and Chesson, they both had 50+ receptions and 700+ receiving yards last year. Those are pretty solid numbers. Both similiar to what Michael Thomas put up last year. If OSU had two receivers returning both with 700+ yards, we would be bullish as well.

ugh, I need to go shower now.

Can either one field a punt snap cleanly?

Here is my bet on whoever starts at QB for them.

They will look great in the first 3 games against the garbage heap of Hawaii, UCF and Colorado. ScUM fans will be blowing Hairball left and right as the great QB messiah and said QB will receive Tate Forcier type praise. That is until whoever he may be hits the wall against Penn State and Wisconsin, crashing quickly back to earth.
