ttun basketball (Juwan out, Dusty May in)

FWIW, here's how I see UM's tournament chances shaking out, keeping in mind that they're currently 18-12 overall, 8-9 in conference, with their best wins being @MSU and @Minnesota (realizing that calling these good wins would be a stretch) and with bad losses against UTEP, Indiana, and Northwestern.

- Lose to MSU on Saturday: OUT. That would put them at 18-13 overall and 8-10 in conference. Even if they were to go to the BTT final and lose, I don't see the committee looking past the sub-.500 record in conference and the fact that they have no good wins in the entire regular season (best win is @MSU, a bubble team).

- Beat MSU on Saturday and lose in first round of BTT: OUT. They'd be .500 in conference, but with a record of 19-13 overall, no quality wins and several bad losses, I don't see how that gets them in.

- Beat MSU on Saturday and win at least one game in BTT: IN. I still wouldn't be impressed at all with their resume, but I think 20+ wins would get them in this year, as they'd really be helped by the three extra spots and the fact that, as one commentator put it, this is the softest NCAA tournament bubble in years.

Apparently there's going to be a 30 for 30 on the "fab 5" soon.

I plan to watch 1 minute for every Big Ten, NCAA, and NBA Championship ever won by any member of the Fab Five: A BIG FUCKING ZERO.

But hey - they had long shorts and dark socks, so they had that going for them.

When Michigan was actually good and reached the championship game 3 out of 5 years.

I know HBO is also going to have a special about the UNLV basketball team. HBO usually does a good job. I enjoyed the Michigan/Ohio St, UNC/Duke, and Bird/Magic on HBO.

Umm, does cheating your fucking ass off and having everything vacated still allow you to use the "actually good" label? I submit that it does not.

The actual NCAA title in '89 was never vacated.

Yeah it does. I go by performance on the court, field, or whatever unless those players are using something that enhances their ability on the playing field (drugs, steriods, etc). They got punished as they should have and really haven't been the same since. Sorry but when a team reaches a championship game 3 out of 5 years and winning one. Seems to me that = good.

It is the same with Cam Newton with the money situation. Money doesn't help him break tackles, juke safeties, or whatever. He was still a hell of a player and was the best player in college football last year. Yeah it's cheating......still doesn't diminish talent .

reality, who needs it

bottom line: fuck Michigan

conspiratorial undercurrent to the bottom line: I'm sure that the boosters cheating their asses off decided to start out of the blue (no pun intended) in 1991 and were not active prior

Maybe, but to be honest Glen Rice caught fire in that tourney and set the record for most points in the NCAA Tournament which still stands and was the only reason Michigan won that tourney.

that actually makes a lot of sense and sheds some light on the fan base

I get the feeling it works the same with the turn of the century football teams, sure they have barely cracked consistently mediocre since and it has been over a century since their pinnacle, but time doesn't diminish talent in the Michigan mind either, it would seem

If you can explain how taking money can diminish an athlete's skill level I''m all ears. It diminishes their character but not their talent.

As far as the cheap shot on Michigan football. You can start at the 50s if you want and still find Michigan as one the top winning programs in the country. Past decade has been rough, but from 1970-1999 Michigan was 3rd in wins and 2nd in winning %. I know most buckeye fans think that Michigan was only good "back in the day" but whatever. Michigan doesn't have the championships to show for it, then again Ohio State only has 1 in the past 40 years. Still doesn't diminish what they have done and still see them as an elite program.

That is a complete strawman. You are creating and defeating an argument that no sane person is even making.

The cheating is forming a team of collective talent you would not otherwise been able to assemble without cheating (paying money for them) and therefore does indeed negate any on the field/court team performance. Of course the superior talent you obtained by cheating is going to perform well. How incompetent would you have to be to cheat and still lose? Oh wait.

As far as the Fab5 goes it shows what a complete lack of heart or winning mentality they had when tsun is able to buy the best talent available in CBB at the time and still not win shit. At least Auburn has a trophy (temporarily) to show for selling their collective soul.

The way I understand it, with cash advances and all, they had A WHOLE LOT more than spiffy shorts & socks going for them.
