Old friend from high school that I'm still in touch with via Facebook just posted that it took her family 14-1/2 hours to get to the Florida/Georgia line from just a little south of Tampa.

Talked to an old college buddy they batoned down the hatches and are staying put in Weston. Said there are a large number doing the same. They are far enough inland just pray that they are on the left side and no where near the eye wall.

1992 image of Andrew (left) layered over image of Irma (right).

Andrew had sustained wind speeds of 165. Irma is at 185 with gusts over 200mph.

yeah andrew wasn't very big, but damn he was a bastard.

him and Katrina had similar pop when they hit the La coast. both came in at around 125.

we caught the eastern edge of Andrews eye.
then the western eye wall of Katrina (but no the actual eye).

I still think Irma could be a CAT 5 at landfall. The recent weakening was due to an Eyewall Replacement Cycle....there isn't much shear and a lot of warm water (in and around 90 degrees) ahead of the storm still to go.

Oh and don't look now but Hurricane Jose is a CAT 4 with 150MPH winds....
