Trading Kevin Garnett?!

there are more than a couple of rumors on the KG trade. Here in dallas many rumors are starting to circulate about KG and the Minn managment not seeing eye to eye and KG wanting out. Some have said that there is a possibility of a Jason Terry Keith Van Horn, for KG and a scrub. Clearly this would be done only for monetary reasons but it would allow for the twolves to have a huge contract come off the books at the end of the year. they could then look to make a splash in the FA market, With that kind of money you could get 2 very good players

I don't know if the T-Wolves would go for that for the same reason that the Pacers didn't want to trade Artest to anyone in the East. Talk about a tall lineup with Dirk and KG. I just wish the Cavs had a huge expiring contract or young star (besides Lebron) to trade for KG. I guess my trade of Hughes, Gooden, Jackson/Pavlovic, and a draft pick or 2 wouldn't be good enough for the T-Wolves especially since they would be stuck with Hughes for 4? more years. I think the T-Wolves would be more likely to take an expiring deal than another star (<kg) with="" many="" max="" years="" left="" on="" his="" contract="" i="" have="" feeling="" that="" new="" mandatory="" 1="" college="" will="" make="" 2007="" class="" very="" strong="" trading="" away="" kg="" now="" and="" getting="" top="" 5="" draft="" pick="" next="" year="" would="" pretty="" much="" assure="" the="" wolves="" of="" a="" star="" to="" build="" around=""></kg)>

oh believe me when i say that i have major doubts about a trade to dallas ever happening, just throwing out there that it had been mentioned as a rumor.

as for free agents that will be out there, the only one off the top of my head is ben wallace, i am sure there are others

Justice Potter Stewart once wrote of obscenity as "i'll know it when i see it."

Well, if I hear a viable trade rumor involving KG, I'll know it when I hear it. And I haven't heard one yet.

KG for Jason Terry, a scrub, and Keith Van Horn? Sorry, doesn't pass the Potter Stewart Test. It would have to be someone:

1. Young with loads of potential.

2. That you could build a franchise around.

3. That a team would be willing to part with... i.e. a contender.

4. And that could draw well.

Anyone have any ideas... There could be throw-ins, but I would think the T-Wolves need someone in the trade that fits the qualities above.

im not saying that you totally off base with you poter stewart test, but i think you would be naive to leave off the all-mighty dollar from the list

It's represented.....

"4. And that can draw well."

The T-Wolves should be more concerned that trading KG is going to cause major backlash from the fans. They'd need to replace him with someone who will set the fans' minds at ease. Financially, it's the move that makes the most sense.

And that's why I don't see a viable trade option here. KG isn't going anywhere.

EDIT: Post Number 666.

KG's only way out is to pull and Artest and say that he wants out. That would change your rules. You don't have to worry about taking a hit with the fans if they are pissed at KG for wanting to be traded. That would allow the Wolves to build for the future.

Garnett isn't mad at anybody besides Mchale. And who can blame him Mchale is by far the worst GM in the league. He would rather spend his time fishing and hunting then do his job. But hopefully the end of Mchales days are near since the rumor is he will be retiring at the end of the year

Minnesota's bad medicine

By Steve Kerr, Yahoo! Sports
January 27, 2006

As the clock continues to tick on Kevin Garnett's career, the wheels continue to spin for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Thursday's trade of Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi and Dwayne Jones to Boston for Ricky Davis, Mark Blount and Marcus Banks and Justin Reed signified an admission from the Wolves' organization that the latest effort to build a team around Garnett wasn't working.
Minnesota was 19-21 following its blowout loss Wednesday to Memphis, and general manager Kevin McHale had seen enough. Szczerbiak, who had been the subject of trade rumors for years, finally moves on, and in the process, the Wolves become a bit more athletic as a team. But if you're a Minnesota fan, the question is not so much whether this move makes the team better, but where the franchise is headed.
Garnett is in his 10th season and in his prime, but he clearly doesn't have enough help around him. The players arriving from Boston may improve the team some, but it isn't about to put the Wolves over the top. Ultimately, Davis, Blount and Banks can't change the fact that one bad personnel choice in 1999 doomed this franchise and relegated it to its current state of mediocrity.
The signing of Joe Smith.
The Wolves appeared to be a team of the future when Garnett quickly rose to stardom just out of Farragut High School in Chicago. Minnesota made the playoffs in Garnett's second season, and teaming with a young Stephon Marbury and Tom Gugliotta, K.G. appeared to give the Wolves the franchise player to someday become an NBA power.

Even after Marbury wanted out – not willing to play second fiddle to his teammate – McHale netted Terrell Brandon, an excellent point guard in his own right. But it was the Smith signing that changed everything for the Timberwolves. McHale agreed to the illegal, handshake deal with Smith's agent on a maximum contract extension before Smith was free to sign one with the team.
Nevermind that signing Smith to a max deal was preposterous to begin with. But to do so illegally, and to get caught, cost McHale and the Wolves dearly. Commissioner David Stern cracked down on the organization harshly, suspending McHale for a year and forcing the team to forfeit three first-round picks. At a time when the club desperately needed to add young talent and depth to its roster, Minnesota was left without first-round choices from 2000 to 2002.
Of course, it is pure speculation as to whom the Wolves would have selected with those first-round picks, but in theory they would have had chances at players such as Desmond Mason, Tony Parker, Zach Randolph or Tayshaun Prince. Instead, the team was forced to try to add to its roster through trades and free agency.
Ironically, given the size of Garnett's mammoth contract, McHale was limited with his salary-cap space and found it difficult to be a major player in the free-agent game. Without picks and cap room, McHale was forced to make some risky signings and trades. And without financial flexibility and first-round picks playing under moderate rookie-scale contracts, the Wolves weren't able to establish a solid foundation for the future.
The result was that, as Garnett blossomed into one of the best players in the league, his teammates came and left Minnesota as if they were going through a turnstile. Smith, incredibly, was re-signed – legally this time – before being shipped off to Milwaukee.
Olowokandi, Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell all made their way in and out of the Twin Cities. Brandon was forced into early retirement due to injury. Troy Hudson and Szczerbiak were signed to big deals but weren't good enough to change the fortunes of the team.
Other than one good playoff run, when Minnesota made the Western Conference finals in 2004, McHale and the Wolves have been like the mouse running on the wheel – racing fast but going nowhere.
So where do they go from here? It's difficult to see this latest trade making a dramatic difference. The Wolves are in need of a dynamic point guard, some outside shooting and a big man to put next to Garnett. More than anything, they need another star to complement and take the pressure off of K.G.
Ricky Davis is a solid player, but he isn't good enough to lift the team to new heights. And Minnesota, for all its troubles, is tangled in salary-cap hell.
So assuming the Wolves don't improve dramatically, the next logical step – as crazy as it might seem – would be to move K.G. and start from scratch. They could unload some unwanted contracts, maybe gather some good young talent and draft picks and try to start all over.
After all, they've been playing catch-up ever since the Joe Smith debacle, and it's gotten them nowhere. Maybe it's time to cash in their chips.

I don't see KG doing this. He's never shown me anything but class in the past. But who knows?

NY Post: Garnett Deal

Semi-varified speculation that a Garnett deal involving the Suns and Celtics is in the works and maybe even done.

That brings us to the Celtics. Reports claim there?s legit Garnett dialogue going on that involves the Suns: Shawn Marion (also a proud owner of an opt-out next summer), Kurt Thomas and Marcus Banks.

In that McHale and Danny Ainge (the Celtics? director of basketball operations) have been boys since the early 1980s, and Boston has Al Jefferson, additional fresh talent, the No. 5 pick and Theo Ratliff?s expiring $11.66M contract to barter, the info certainly sounds reasonable.

In fact, who needs the Suns in the mix? Steve Kerr can be a bit pushy. Ask Michael Jordan. I wouldn?t put it past Phoenix?s new basketball operations honcho to try to duck under the velvet rope, gate crash and somehow get Jefferson for his effort with Marion winding up in Minny.

For what McHale?s street cred is worth, he maintains all of the above is sheer speculation. I find that hard to believe. There?s too much stuff out there for reporters to be making it up on a daily basis. Though I do wonder if K.G. remembers Wally Szczerbiak is a Celtic.

A demi-reliable Minnesota source supports McHale?s stance: ?We?re listening. We?re open to discussion. If they were serious Garnett would be in on them.?

An Eastern Conference executive goes both ways on the sumo subject: ?I?m getting the feeling Minnesota would like to do something, but the big issue is Garnett?s ability to opt out. I do think Boston-Phoenix is real, but the Garnett contract is a huge issue. No team is going to deal with McHale without dealing with Garnett and his agent.?

Who?s willing to testify under oath that hasn?t happened? Who?d believe any of these guys if they did? My instincts tell me a firm deal already is in place.

A source that puts copious coin in Garnett?s bank account claims it?ll be announced on draft day, no later than when the salaries change July 1.

Garnett says no way to Celtics. When I can find the agents quote I'll post it here. I heard it on the radio about an hour ago. The agent, Andy Miller, also says that there is a 100% chance that KG will not be in Minnesota next year. Miller apparently is calling all over the place to find interest in Garnett. If it gets later in the offseason with no deal done, I'm guessing someone could get a steal for KG and reap the rewards for the next 5-7 years. Would KG like to play with Lebron in Cleveland? I don't see why not but what could Cleveland deal back to Minnesota to make the deal work out?

OK I found the link. Garnett
