Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

Buckeyes host the Hokies for the 2014 Home opener.
My brother in law and myself will be driving in to support our Hokies in the Horseshoe. Hoping for a great trip but we had a few questions as we have never been to a game here before.

1) We purchased a parking pass with our tickets. It says that it is West Stadium parking. Is this parking area right next to the stadium? Is it numbered and assigned spaces?

2) I reviewed the alcohol policy for the campus and if I understand it correctly we cannot have any alcohol or beer at the tailgates. Is this true?

3) If you had to recommend one place to eat and have a drink that typifies OSU and the OSU campus/football, where would that one place be?

Hope to have a great time. And while I recognize the current standing for both teams....I will still be in the stands screaming "Lets Go.............HOKIES!!!" And hopefully you fans come visit us in Lane Stadium in 2015!!!

Alcohol while tailgating is prevalent. There will be cops monitoring the situation and generally, they are okay with people drinking alcohol so long as it's done respectfully and responsibly. They'll want to see you concealing the alcohol (red solo cups) and they'll want you being discreet about pouring the alcohol (ie not making a public display anytime you open a beer). They're willing to let you drink, they just don't want you taking advantage of it.

I would not suggest bringing hard liquor with you. But if you do, keep it in your car. That's the one thing I've seen the cops crack down on. And by crack down, I mean a simple "hey come on man, put that away."

I would vote for the Varsity Club.

Also, make sure you are in your seats at least 20 before KO. The band entrance is one of our grandest traditions.

I'll second that. I've never thought the food is that great, but it's close to the stadium and it, more than anything I've found, typifies an OSU bar on game day. Get there early, though--the place gets absolutely packed. If you get there late, you'll be standing the whole time (if you even get in the door), and it's difficult to get to the bar to get a drink with the standing room only crowd. But it's a great experience--I love that place on game day.

Thurman's is the classic Columbus destination, incredible burger joint. Varsity club is definitely the quintessential gameday experience and right down from the 'Shoe, so that is probably my gameday recommendation...it will be packed though, so be prepared to wait. A breakfast recommendation from me that is classic Ohio State is Buckeye donuts on High St. The donuts are incredible of course but the breakfast sandwiches are amazing and super cheap...about 3$ each last time I was there. Plus 1$ tater tots that are almost bottomless. And generally you don't have to wait too long, even on gameday.

As for alcohol, @southcampus nailed it...keep it discrete, Columbus cops are usually pretty lenient and overall awesome in my experiences (and generally I do not say that haha). Me and my compadres have thrown down pretty hard before and never had any issues.

I'll second this one. Thurman's is the one restaurant in Cbus that you will find on top 10 lists nationwide - as a burger joint. Both Todd Blackledge and Adam Richman (Man versus Food) have done segments at Thurman's.

It too can be crowded (very small place with long lines during peak hours). However, they have recently introduced a take out option if you want to try the burger without the ambiance. Don't go to Thurman's and not have the burger.

I love Thurman's too, but just to be clear for our out of town guests, it's nowhere near walkable from campus. Campus is well north of downtown, then (proceeding south) you've got downtown, then you've got German Village, then on the south end of German Village you've got Thurman's. Certainly doable if you have a lot of time and a car, but not doable if you're walking.

Adriatico's, which is excellent, is on campus and walkable, FYI.

I love popping into Tommy's Pizza after games. Might be more nostalgia for me, but it's a tradition from college. Pretty damn good pizza, and right there on Lane and Neal.

I will pile on with recommending Adriatico's...honestly THE best pizza I have had in my life. Not much of a "ambiance" in the restaurant so to speak, but the pizza is flat out exceptional and very affordable. Plus it is easily in walking distance on campus and as mentioned, Thurman's is not. I would recommend Thurman's far away from gametime so you can cab over there.

@philsteele042: Virginia Tech loses its 2nd OL for the season. Mark Shuman was working #1 RT and is OFY joining RG Brent Benedict who was OFY earlier
