Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

Never say never.

In this game, the tOSU defense is not looking good. Starting the fourth OT, the score is tied 92 to 92. MSU scores but misses the 2 point conversion, so the score is 98 to 92. Then, Hyde rolls into the endzone, making it 98 to 98. Braxton goes for 2 and converts on a designed run. The scoreboard operator adds one point making the score 98 to 99 and then the scoreboard operator tries to add one more, but the computer knows there are only 2 digits available, so it refuses to add one. The tOSU fans, who are in the majority, storm the field, and all the pictures of the goal posts being torn down show 98 to 99. The officials walk off.

Next question please.

What the hell happened to our defense?

Below is the scenario I came up with yesterday. I think mine is more plausible.

That would be an accomplishment. The only way I can see that happening is:

In the 4th overtime, MSU has the first offensive possession and throws and interception. OSU foolishly tries to return it but fumbles into their own endzone where they recover it for a safety.
Basil then kicks the game winning field goal for a one point victory.

I can't find many scenarios where a 4 OT game would be decided by one point.

One point in over time 4.

Not possible.

I have put way more thought into this since I am bored at work. But if team A kicks a field goal in overtime putting them up by 3. Team Bs next possession throws an interception in the field of play around the end zone. Kid doesn't go down (for unknown reason), runs back into the end zone and a safety is incurred would the margin not be one point?

I am not saying this could/would/should ever happen, put just thought of it as Mythbusters would say as "probable" Like I said I was bored at work when I saw your post.

I guess I should have read the entire thread instead of starting on page 20. I didn't see Fungo Squiggly's post until after I posted. :lol

Boys and girls, this is going to be one tough game. Last year we won by one point. This year will be much closer. One point in over time 4.

You're all overlooking the obvious, simple explanation for this outcome:

1) The same PAC-12 crew that worked the Wisconsin-Arizona State officiating fiasco are assigned to this game
2) Just before midnight on December 6, tsun and MSU shock their respective fan bases by announcing they have traded coaches
3) After miraculously scratching out a tie at the end of regulation, as well as the first three overtimes, MSU wins the toss & elects to defend
4) Braxton immediately throws for a TD and OSU adds 2 with a run from Hyde
5) Many downs later, an exhausted MSU pushes across the goal line for 6
6) Brady Hoke (weakened by malnourishment after such an extended time without a full meal, compounded by the lingering effects of hypothermia acquired in previous outdoor games where he inexplicably refused to put on a damn coat) suffers a PTSD flashback to The Game 2013.
Nearly incoherent, between sobs, Hoke sputters out "Send in the kicking team."
Despite vehement protests from his assistant coaches and the MSU team, Hoke prevails.
7) Accompanied by deafening howls of glee (OSU fans)/horror (MSU fans), the MSU kicker makes the after point.
8) The entire officiating crew--preoccupied on their cells with sexting their girlfriends, ordering an after-game pizza, and checking the score in the Pac-12 CG--are oblivious to this irregularity and signal the kick good, then immediately sprint for the exits.
9) The Buckeyes win by 1 in the 4th overtime!!!

See? Simple.

Not possible.

Actually, possible.

A safety incurred during a PAT (or two-point conversion attempt) counts as a single point. So if Ohio State fumbled on a two-point conversion attempt, Michigan State recovered and retreated back into the end zone where they were tackled--that would give Ohio State a one-point safety...which could end a game in 4th overtime as a one-point win.

The NCAA rule is as follows:

"On a try attempt… a Team A fumble that is recovered in the Team B end zone by Team B. RULING: Safety, award Team A one point (Rules 8-3-1 and 8-5-1)."

Here's an example of the one-point safety actually occurring...

Is that only for fumbles? If so, why are picks different? In 2009 against Navy Brian Rolle returned an interception on a 2-point attempt and was granted a 2 point safety.

Any extra point attempt - kick, pass or run - that results in the defense recovering the ball and returning it the length of the field is worth 2points.

This was added in 1958 at the same time as the 2 point conversion.
