Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

Upon rereading I get what tundra is saying. The main reason I brought up the Navy game is because I remember a Tamu or Illinois game from 7-10 years ago where a conversion attempt was either blocked or recovered or picked off and returned the same way Rolle returned the pick, and they were granted 1 point.
Back in '05 I believe, Illinois ran a blocked PAT or something back for their only score. I believe the final was 40-2.

Actually, possible.

A safety incurred during a PAT (or two-point conversion attempt) counts as a single point. So if Ohio State fumbled on a two-point conversion attempt, Michigan State recovered and retreated back into the end zone where they were tackled--that would give Ohio State a one-point safety...which could end a game in 4th overtime as a one-point win.

The NCAA rule is as follows:

"On a try attempt… a Team A fumble that is recovered in the Team B end zone by Team B. RULING: Safety, award Team A one point (Rules 8-3-1 and 8-5-1)."

Here's an example of the one-point safety actually occurring...

The funny thing about this very obscure rule is that the wording of the rule makes it possible for the defense to score one point as well. The situation would be that the xp try is blocked, the defense picks up the ball and runs toward the opposite endzone, the defending player, now with the ball fumbles in the field of play, the fumbled ball is picked up by the offense (kicking team) who then retreats to the endzone (at the opposite end from where xp try was, where the defense was going when they had the ball) and is then tackled in the endzone. This would yield a 1 point safety for the defense, making it the only way, in any version of American football, where a team can have one point on the board. If it happened after the first score of the game, the score would then be 6 to 1. Oddly, I don't think this has ever happened.

Of course, this can not happen in a 4th overtime since you have to go for 2 point conversions.

I'm not enjoying all the trips down memory lane this week to the '98 game against Sparty. That loss to me is even worse than the '06 debacle. Watching the '06 game it became apparent pretty quickly that on both sides of the ball our lines were having trouble matching up. That game was a worst case scenario for a variety of reasons and it's a much different game if there was a rematch, but it's hard to argue that we were the better team, and we obviously didn't deserve to win.

The '98 game, I still can't accept that we lost that one. Still not sure how it happened, a couple jump balls to Plax notwithstanding. A nightmarish 20 minutes cost that team being considered one of the all time great ball clubs.
