Long time reader and finally joined. This was all predictable unfortunately. Our defensive coaching is a mess. It is so obvious. It reminds me a great deal of the O-line coaching that went on under Tress. Under Bollman, our O-line never seemed to be able to block anyone. My dad constantly complained at how poor our O-linemen were. I used to tell him constantly it is the coaching and he would argue with me that it was the talent of the players. Well, that proved to be totally incorrect as many of the "terrible O linemen" went on to All Pro NFL careers. Same with our DBs. Abberderis made Roby look like he couldn't cover a junior high wide out. I am going to predict Roby goes on to an All Pro NFL career. It is all coaching. I played college football. You work on technique every single practice. Grants' technique is terrible. Our stunts are so vanilla and predictable we constantly get burnt with screens. Our stunts are picked up by the oppositions o-line too often too, meaning they have prepared for them and recognize them quickly. That is because we never seem to change them from week to week and they are too predictable. Our D look nothing like the days it did under Dantonio where it seemed he unveiled a new stunt package every week, like he did on us last night. MSU was constantly in Millers face and flushing him from the pocket, even though our o-line is outstanding now, thanks to coaching. We need the same level of coaching on the defensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, Fickle just doesn't have it and he proved so as interim. Withers has to go as well. Coombs is next. He makes our DBs appear inept. They are not inept.
As bad as I wanted to play for a NC, I think FSU would have embarrassed us and it would have done more damage to our reputation and hurt us in the future. This loss has two potential benefits. One, we save our reputation by not getting humiliated by FSU as they would have put up 60 on us. And second, now I am pretty sure that the three D-coaches previously mentioned will be coaching somewhere else next year.
