Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, B1G Championship Game, Sat 8 ET on FOX

The more and more you look at it, the more mind blowing it really is of what Herman thought he was doing. After we go up 24-17 with 20 min left in the game, carlos hyde has.......wait for it......4 carries. And averaged 6.25 ypc. Yes. Seriously. That's real life.

Edit: he probably had more plays (hell maybe twice as many plays) where he was inexplicably spread out wide than he had actual rushes. It truly is hard to fathom what he was thinking.

This. This is why I was so angry last night and why I'm still angry this morning.
Yes the defense gave up 34 but we know what they are and (unfortunately) expect that from them.
The offense had this game in the palm of their hands and the coaches play calling let it go.
Give. Hyde. The. Damn. Ball.

I had a strong feeling before the game that our secondary defense would be Michigan States primary goal to go after. We stopped there running game pretty good and after being down by 17 in the 1st half, it was nice to see how we came back and put up 24 un-answered
points on sparty. There were many times in the game that I thought we could have pounded them with the run all night but.............
and I was pretty sure that Tom Herman would have some good play calling but that didn't seem to happen either. What do we do to fix a broken defense like we have. It was a great season while it lasted - I know it's not over but like "Telekinesis" said ...... It Stings.

Thats nice and all, but now the hate and bull[Mark May] of the media is multiplied by 600 and we have to continue to listen to people [Mark May] on OSU.

I agree, that's why my Sirius radio will be tuned to the "Chill" Channel until bowl games start. Tim Brando will be all over this with his big mouth and pontificating on air presence. You want to get upset quickly, listen to him once and you will be pissed off for a month. Don't need that.

By trickery I meant not playing to your strength and calling plays that you think will "trick" the D, instead of just running it down their throats, which Hyde was doing most of the game.

Call it Meyer's mis-direction play I guess. There wasn't much innovation. We will beat these guys next year when we are 12 and 0 again. The hardest part is knowing we had the RBs to take it to them. Did Wilson even touch the ball other than KO returns "catches"? Disappointed but still proud of the accomplishments. They'll fix the D and better players will emerge.

Congrats to MSU on the win. But look out next year.

Long time reader and finally joined. This was all predictable unfortunately. Our defensive coaching is a mess. It is so obvious. It reminds me a great deal of the O-line coaching that went on under Tress. Under Bollman, our O-line never seemed to be able to block anyone. My dad constantly complained at how poor our O-linemen were. I used to tell him constantly it is the coaching and he would argue with me that it was the talent of the players. Well, that proved to be totally incorrect as many of the "terrible O linemen" went on to All Pro NFL careers. Same with our DBs. Abberderis made Roby look like he couldn't cover a junior high wide out. I am going to predict Roby goes on to an All Pro NFL career. It is all coaching. I played college football. You work on technique every single practice. Grants' technique is terrible. Our stunts are so vanilla and predictable we constantly get burnt with screens. Our stunts are picked up by the oppositions o-line too often too, meaning they have prepared for them and recognize them quickly. That is because we never seem to change them from week to week and they are too predictable. Our D look nothing like the days it did under Dantonio where it seemed he unveiled a new stunt package every week, like he did on us last night. MSU was constantly in Millers face and flushing him from the pocket, even though our o-line is outstanding now, thanks to coaching. We need the same level of coaching on the defensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, Fickle just doesn't have it and he proved so as interim. Withers has to go as well. Coombs is next. He makes our DBs appear inept. They are not inept.

As bad as I wanted to play for a NC, I think FSU would have embarrassed us and it would have done more damage to our reputation and hurt us in the future. This loss has two potential benefits. One, we save our reputation by not getting humiliated by FSU as they would have put up 60 on us. And second, now I am pretty sure that the three D-coaches previously mentioned will be coaching somewhere else next year.

Good first post.

What is most disappointing to me is that we got our hats handed to us by Bollman last night.

My other concern with our D is where are the frosh? I get it that LB is a tough spot to play when you are new. The secondary - not so much. Our secondary is horrid. Yet we brought in 5 four star and 1 five star DBs this year and none of them are seeing the field on D. We need athletes and these kids are athletes. When Roby went down we brought in a senior who, well, I wont bash. I am having a very hard time buying that it is a personnel issue.

All that said there are two types of OSU fans. Fickell fans and fickle fans. I tend to be both. The only way I want to see Luke leave is for a HC job.

But I do want to see that.
