Game Thread tOSU vs. Penn St. (Dark Night in the 'Shoe) Sat 10/17 @ 8p ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

Fans unwilling to accept defeat gracefully seems like a staple of college football fandom and message boards in particular. Happens at every place, maybe moreso there because of inferiority complex, but it happens. I hope you don't really give a crap about it, because it's not worth you wasting your energy on a fanatic being a fanatic.
I was being a little tongue in cheek there, but I do grow weary of this particular characteristic of that fan base.

It's true about fans. I've had way more problems with OSU fans than I have had with other fans - because I interact with a lot more OSU fans, especially at Ohio Stadium. But to your point, people are people no matter where you go - and you find the good and bad ones in about the same percentages here as you do there.

But my perception is that a strong characteristic of a larger segment than normal of PSU fans love to whine about refs. Maybe my perception is skewed by something. Nevertheless, that 63-14 beatdown was pure enjoyment because of that perception, and I wouldn't mind to see it again.

Jwinslow basically answered with the examples I was going to give - which goes to my point that calls this way and that can help you or be something you have to overcome, BUT THEY DO NOT DETERMINE GAMES! It just seems like they do, especially when they occur toward the end. We remember that call and forget everything that came before and after it - that our team had control of.

I can only add one thing on the Miami game: the Hurricanes had Ohio State at 4th and 14. Prevent a first down and you win the game. Krenzel to Jenkins for a 1st down is what happened. Just taking this play as an example, Krenzel and Jenkins (along with the protection) executed the play call that the coaches gave them. The Miami defense failed to execute against it. And that trumps the ridiculous non-call of holding on Gamble (TWICE!), the errant call of no catch, the non-call of a push in the back to AJ Hawk to allow a big punt return, and a phantom or real PI call at the end of the 1st OT. IOW, in spite of the calls that went one team's way or another, both teams had many, many opportunities to win the game based solely on executing on crucial plays.

It's just a pet peeve of mine when people refuse to acknowledge that when their loses, their players and coaches bear the responsibility for that. If next week I'm hearing PSU fans blaming refs for not calling holding, or whatever, it will make me want to punch something - ideally those PSU fans.

Again.. I was asked about why Penn State fans get so upset about the officiating.. I didn't bring it up. I was only answering the question. There were plenty of losses last year where the blame went solely on the staff, the players, the offensive line, credit to the other team, etc.. and certainly nobody mentioned officiating in the Temple game this year. The discussion even in wins lately is about how bad our offensive coordinator, qb, offensive line, etc.. are. Fans are fans, man.. they're going to blame a lot of things if things don't go their way. And when things go a team's way, it's hard to admit that you got a break and not want to give total credit to your team. I get it.. I'm the same way. And if you wanna punch anyone in the face, I'll just suggest you don't, especially over a football game. Saturdays in the fall are like holidays and this coming one is one of the biggest of the season, at least for me. Just enjoy it and ignore stupid stuff people say. I know I'll have my share of ignoring to do in C-bus this weekend. Off topic.. Chris Gamble was my favorite player in the country to watch that year other than Larry Johnson and Eddie George was my favorite NFL player when he was with the Titans. Good luck Saturday, I hope it's an epic game.

Maybe, but it had been VERY steady at 17 for several days --- Sunday PM through Thursday AM. Then a pretty quick jump.

17 is a number where a lot of football games "land at", of course --- it's generally more unusual for lines to move from numbers like 3, 7, 10, 14, and 17 versus numbers like 5, 8, 12, and 19 (for instance).

Based on observing these things for 10-15 years (yes, I am a degenerate gambler  ), I tend to think that someone knows something (player availability???). Line movement indicates it would be favorable for Ohio State.

Makes me nervous that someone knows Barkley won't play. My hope goes down the drain without any kind of threat in the backfield. I feel like he gave PSU a puncher's chance. No run game and Hack will be running for his life again.

Do you remember the lengthy discussions and threads on this board from 4-5 years ago where there were plenty of folks here complaining about how Ohio State had more calls against them? Shoot, Jwins even gathered stats on the "issue". It was a long running complaint and while no one ever claimed "conspiracy", it was discussed a lot. Now, the complaining seems relatively muted compared to PSU, but that seems mostly because of the fact that we win at about an 85% clip. I remember at the time thinking that the ref complaints and the Notion that Ohio State was getting screwed was silly.

In fairness, for three consecutive years under Tressel Ohio State led the NATION in fewest penalty yards per game for its opponents. That's an incredible statistic that's hard to attribute to random chance.

I don't think I was claiming they were getting screwed. I mentioned a statistic that had osu at the top of the list or close to it for a handful of seasons in a row for least penalties called on one team's opponents. It was a pretty remarkable stat.

If I was complaining then tell me to shut up

Maybe
