URBAN MEYER CALLS PENN STATE'S PASSING OFFENSE THE BEST OHIO STATE'S FACED THUS FAR IN 2015

61524_h.jpg,qitok=Bwmq8k10.pagespeed.ce.DfEkgVLh4v.jpg

Eli Apple's seen Christian Hackenberg play many times before. In fact, he caught passes from the Penn State quarterback prior to his time at Ohio State.

"He was my quarterback for some 7-on-7s back in high school, so I know he has a really, really good arm," Apple, who is from New Jersey said of Hackenberg, who is from Virginia. "He's going to be a first round (NFL Draft) quarterback for sure."

Apple wouldn't go as far as to say the Hackenberg-led Nittany Lion passing unit — which is only 11th in the Big Ten and averages 187 yards per game — figures to be the best Ohio State's faced in 2015 to date, but his head coach did.

"Certainly it is," Urban Meyer said Wednesday. "They're a get it out fast team. So when you say get it out fast, a lot of time that's on the Darron Lees, the linebackers because a lot will be underneath. Also, they throw a lot of screens and that's D-line retracing the line."

I think I was answering your original question of why a fanbase would be upset.. One call can change the outcome of a game.. I think you got yourself a flag to extend a national title game one year. You don't get that flag and you would be okay with saying that you had numerous other chances to win the game? I though it was a good call, but I've seen it not called. Miami certainly didn't think it was a good call. In fact, that season you were one play away from losing several different games. One bad call that ends your dream season might tick you off a little bit.. how about if Michigan benefits from a terrible call to beat you this year in a close, hard fought game? I'm sure you'll give credit to Michigan. You certainly might be that guy.. but I doubt your fanbase would be so understanding.

As for holding, I understand why your offensive line wouldn't get called for holding much as it was outstanding.. but the whole big ten season? I'm one of the dumb fans. I don't know anything about x's and o's other than tecmo bowl.. but I do watch our defensive linemen pretty closely as they're usually our best players. I do notice when they're turned around and being held trying to get to a qb or rb. I'll pay attention to "your" d-line too.. I refer them as yours because you're a buckeye fan.. my apologies.. but I'll notice them running free and probably being tackled a couple times by our offensive line. It might get called a couple times but we'll get away with it too.. big ten officials don't call holding very often. I don't know why, but they don't.

First of all, thanks for stopping by and hopefully you can stick around, though as a pseudo rival it might get a bit chippy in here :) You've been a quality contributor so farGamble was raped. TWICE. on a late third down to ice the game against Miami. He also caught the ball in bounds. None of those three things were called properly, so OSU had to punt. AJ Hawk was blatantly clipped as he slowed right in front of the punt returner ,springing their anemic offense for 20+ yds and the game tying FG. Then OT began and the flag occurred.

Stuff happens. The reason other PSU fans draw such a reputation is because of the wild conspiracies spouted on their message boards, and how jealousy drives the man to keep PSU down. That's how the league is played. It's the same way in basketball, rampant, illegal molestation by all big bodies. They say that they can call holding on every play, and on any passing down, there is some egregious rule breaking going on at one of the spots almost every time. I have no idea how the refs decide when to stop ignoring it.

Jwinslow basically answered with the examples I was going to give - which goes to my point that calls this way and that can help you or be something you have to overcome, BUT THEY DO NOT DETERMINE GAMES! It just seems like they do, especially when they occur toward the end. We remember that call and forget everything that came before and after it - that our team had control of.

I can only add one thing on the Miami game: the Hurricanes had Ohio State at 4th and 14. Prevent a first down and you win the game. Krenzel to Jenkins for a 1st down is what happened. Just taking this play as an example, Krenzel and Jenkins (along with the protection) executed the play call that the coaches gave them. The Miami defense failed to execute against it. And that trumps the ridiculous non-call of holding on Gamble (TWICE!), the errant call of no catch, the non-call of a push in the back to AJ Hawk to allow a big punt return, and a phantom or real PI call at the end of the 1st OT. IOW, in spite of the calls that went one team's way or another, both teams had many, many opportunities to win the game based solely on executing on crucial plays.

It's just a pet peeve of mine when people refuse to acknowledge that when their loses, their players and coaches bear the responsibility for that. If next week I'm hearing PSU fans blaming refs for not calling holding, or whatever, it will make me want to punch something - ideally those PSU fans.

Fans unwilling to accept defeat gracefully seems like a staple of college football fandom and message boards in particular. Happens at every place, maybe moreso there because of inferiority complex, but it happens. I hope you don't really give a crap about it, because it's not worth you wasting your energy on a fanatic being a fanatic.

Vegas makes me feel pretty good about this game right now. I feel like they are egging people on to pick PSU with the really large spread. As a better, with the game last year, and all the hype for the potential upset I would want to bet PSU. Were it a 3-6 pt spread I feel like they were egging people to bet OSU expecting an upset. I know, their typical goal is to get the bets equal, but they have been using this strategy more and more lately.

I predict 70-3, in favor of Ohio State. One of the touchdowns is actually a field goal that the referees score incorrectly, and 4 of the other 9 touchdowns are actually scored by Penn State. Again, the referees give the points and extra points to Ohio State. Ohio State kicks a field goal as time expires in the first half, but the referees realized that they've sucked up to that point, so they give the points to Penn State. The refs forget that there's a second half, and they don't come back out on the field. Game ends officially at that point, but Kirk Herbstreit find enough to talk about to fill up the rest of the time slot. Interestingly, Braxton Miller gets flagged for "targeting" the orange pylon in the second half (no explanation from the league on how that happens), and has to sit out the first half next week.

I also predict that Urban Meyer is a classless dickhole of a coach for running up the score and keeping Eliot in the game after the opening kickoff, and Bosa is a druggie because he listens to EDM and because he makes Christian Hackenberg cry.

FILM STUDY: BREAKING DOWN THE PENN STATE OFFENSE

61538_h.jpg,qitok=BLMIa2Wx.pagespeed.ce.BZvlC65Q_U.jpg

Penn State’s 2015 season has been marred by offensive inconsistency and protection issues, resulting in the O-line giving up a record 10 sacks in an opening season 27-10 loss to Temple.

With Big Ten all-freshman wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton unable to repeat his 2014 catch numbers thus far, the Lions lack an explosive offensive playmaker — resulting in a unit that struggles to string together drives and create explosive plays. The Nittany Lions currently rank 13th in the Big Ten in total offense (344 yards per game) and are last place in first down percentage (31 percent).

Head coach James Franklin has married Penn State’s traditional pro-style offense with the spread concepts he ran at Vanderbilt. The unit runs an interesting mix of spread concepts such as the zone blocking scheme (ZBS), run-pass options (RPO), screens, and four receiver sets, while still maintaining the unit’s tradition of heavy personnel formations utilizing multiple running backs and tight ends.

It isn’t uncommon to see quarterback Christian Hackenberg huddle and take a snap under center, then rush to the line and take the next snap out of the shotgun in a “check with me” play call (coach signals in the play from the sideline after the offense is aligned).

TWING-P-1024x575.png

Although Franklin has stated his scheme should ideally run an even run-pass ratio, a lack of consistent talent at the skill positions have forced offensive coordinator John Donovan to plan and call conservative games in order to keep the offense out of negative situations. Until a reliable option emerges in the pass game, this team will continue to be a run-first squad.

Penn State’s surprise player of the season has been 5-foot-11, 220-pound true freshman RB Saquon Barkley, who introduced himself to college football fans with a 12-carry, 115-yard effort against Buffalo. With Barkley carrying the ball the Penn State offense has put up its three highest point totals of the season in victories over Buffalo (27-14), Rutgers (28-3), and San Diego State (37-21).

FWIW, the pointspread has made a jump from 17 to 19 (with a few random 19.5 spreads) in just the last couple hours.

Somewhat unusual in both the magnitude of the jump, and in how quickly it happened.
I don't bet, but I'm guessing that's because a shit-ton of people are taking OSU to cover the 17 so Vegas is widening the spread.

Maybe, but it had been VERY steady at 17 for several days --- Sunday PM through Thursday AM. Then a pretty quick jump.

17 is a number where a lot of football games "land at", of course --- it's generally more unusual for lines to move from numbers like 3, 7, 10, 14, and 17 versus numbers like 5, 8, 12, and 19 (for instance).

Based on observing these things for 10-15 years (yes, I am a degenerate gambler  ), I tend to think that someone knows something (player availability???). Line movement indicates it would be favorable for Ohio State.
