Game Thread tOSU vs. Penn St. (Dark Night in the 'Shoe) Sat 10/17 @ 8p ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

Helmet-to-helmet doesn't require the player getting hit be defenseless.

Ok - I was looking at Rule 9-1-4. "Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player." I went to the website to find the rule and show that you need to be defenseless for this rule. As it turns out, Rule 9-1-3 is pretty much identical to 9-1-4, except you don't need to be "defenseless". Same punishment. What's the point of 9-1-4 then? I guess 9-1-3 is basically "leading with the crown of your helmet" (doesn't matter where you hit the other guy) and 9-1-4 is "aiming at the other guy's head" (requires the other player be defenseless).

Anyway, I withdraw my objection to the call, based on 9-1-3.

I believe the main difference with a defenseless player, the defender can use only his shoulder and it still be a targeting foul vs the helmet.

Unlike the cultsters, I don't think this play made a difference in the outcome, but on 4th and 2 around the 20 in the fourth quarter, when your running back already has about 170 yards, why the hell do you call a passing play? Did Lane Kiffin decide to donate his time to Penn State? Or maybe he was helping out Ohio State...

There was a run on the previous play (went for nothing), and a receiver was open on the 4th-and-2 play.

Hackenberg --- as is often the case for that underachiever --- missed the open guy and ended up sacked.

IMO, it was the correct call.

Marcus Baugh's holding penalty last night was the first offensive holding penalty against the Buckeyes in conference play since 2013. Yes. You just read that correctly. For all the bitching we do about missed holds on our D-line, the simple fact is that B1G refs rarely call holding on anyone.
That's actually not true. We got called for holding last week.

Just watched the play where Williams got called for targeting...I froze the video right when the RB caught the ball. The RB was at the 19 and Williams--already closing in--was in full stride right at the 25. Williams had 6 yards of closing space to get low...hell, he had time to tackle the RB by the ankles had he wanted to. There was zero excuse for a high tackle, especially for someone who is, although a career second-stringer, a senior with a ton of game experience over his four years in the program.

I'm re-watching the game on Youtube. I was looking for a play that apparently didn't make it onto the TV. Penn State brought their punt team on, I believe in the 2nd quarter, but possibly the 3rd. The lineup was fairly standard, but before the players got set, the 3 guys on the line to the left of the center shifted to the right side, and the 3 guys on the line to the right of the center shifted left of center. The Ohio State players all shifted with the Penn State players. I can't tell why, and the whole thing got blown dead for a false start penalty against Penn State. Around 11:39 of the 2nd quarter, Penn State brought their punt team on, and the TV just showed replays of the 3rd down play. They don't show the shifting.

Anyway, does anyone know what was going on with the formation shift, and why did Ohio State bother to shift, too? Maybe someone else was at the game and saw this?

Drive starts around 52:00. I think this was the drive that ended with the punt I'm thinking about.

I remember it. After hearing Franklin's conference, it sounds like the Buckeyes were beating the shit out of a guard. Maybe they were shifting to give the guy a chance.
Anyway... a flag was thrown on the shift.
