tOSU vs. Ohio - Tuesday, 11/12 - 8:00 PM - BTN

As a long time player, coach, and (for a while) referee I appreciate the changes. I felt the game was getting out of hand with physical play, particularly as the young men that play big time college basketball started to hit the weight room harder back in the 90's. I think you will find that the game will be more fun to watch as PLAYERS adjust, not officials. My hope is that we begin to see more of the pattern offenses, with screens and back doors. As it has been, if a guy starts to beat you back door, you just grab him and get away with it. If you didn't want an opponent to start their offense on the left side, you pushed the point guard to the right side.

Maybe the points of emphasis will not meet the desired result, but I for one welcome the attempt to clean up the game.

I don't recall hoping the NCAA would completely reverse the rule. I just think they need to let them play a little bit.

Good game, good win. OU is a pretty good team. Stevie Taylor and Kellogg are a lethal duo, and really fun to watch.

I was at the game, and have to say the atmosphere was really cool. It was a really fun dynamic playing an instate school. I think a mini Ohio tournament would be fun. OSU, OU, Xavier, Dayton, Cincy and another.

As for OSU, I was REALLY impressed with Lovings overall game. He plays well on the defensive end, can rebound, and has a smooth stroke. It will be interesting to see how his minutes shape up.

Thad is a mastermind at developing the team as the season goes on. I think this team can be right up there with any team in the country come tourney time.

Yes... really hope the players adjust because if they don't... dang college basketball might be unwatchable. It was just sad watching all the ticky tack calls being made. Both sides were like that... but with a young Ohio team not use to playing with each other just yet, they just were a half step slow in their defensive rotations causing all those ticky tack fouls.

Only thirty more free throws than OU? Man did we get screwed.

You can say that again... oh wait... you weren't talking about Ohio, eh?

OU bench looks... defeated

The bench you saw looking defeated were all the players fouled out. WOW... crazy how this game was officiated. Would have loved to see the final 5 minutes if Ohio's whole front court along with their backups weren't fouled out.

Didn't think we would win... but loved what I saw from my team. Looked like Stevie will fill Cooper's shoes very well and Ndour looks like he will be fun to watch in the MAC. This team will be a bear once they get use to playing with each other...

Matta is really going to earn his paycheck this season because OU just gave the formula to every other coach out there on how to beat Ohio State. Just play zone defense and the Buckeyes are going to struggle unless a few guys really step it up with their outside shooting and, as much as I love Craft, he is going to have to at least try a couple outside shots during a game.

^THIS

I don't even care if he makes it. If you are wide open, take the shot.

As much as I'm going to hate the adjustment period to the new rules, ultimately I think it really helps the big ten come tourney time. How many times over the last 20 years have we watched big ten teams get tripped up by the tighter officiating that's the norm everywhere else in the country.

The pretenders from Madison, yes.

The talented, versatile squads from East Lansing and Columbus? Less so.

I agree - it's not going to be fun during the transition, but once players recognize that the change is going to last and adjust to it, the game will be much more enjoyable to watch.

Until then, team depth and free throw shooting are going to become more important than ever.

Yeah, one of the best atmospheres I can remember in the Schott was the NIT game with Dayton. Truly OSU should be playing UD, X, UC at least regularly, and the other top MAC schools (in addition to OU) like Akron and Kent St more often than they have been. I know OSU probably feels like they have better programs to target with the limited number of marquee nonconference games that they have, and don't want to subtract home games just to have home & homes with the in-state schools, but the nonconference schedule strength has truly decreased over the years, apparently coinciding with an increased desire of OSU to milk every possible dollar out of the hoops program. I suspect that has also caused them to ordinarily refuse to shell out the guarantee $ it takes to get an OU, Kent St, or Akron regularly. If you can get a Morgan State for $90,000 and have to pay $110,000 for a Valpo or an OU and will sell about 14,000 tickets either way, unfortunately they have opted for the cheaper teams more frequently.

The thing is, right now it looks like OSU has six guys who are threats to get double figures night in and night out. And a couple more in Loving and ADV that can put up 3-4 points a game apiece (who knows, maybe even Kam as well). That's some good offensive balance, and it will make it hard for opposing teams to defend and I think the offense will improve as the season wears on due to the balance of scoring ability.

I suppose this will stink like Debbie Downer's unwashed pooter, but I turned off the TV thinking the Buckeyes will be fortunate to finish in the top four in the league this season.

Can't hit the ocean from the beach. 41 percent for the game? 27% from 3? WTF? Ohio's no Michigan State when it comes to team D.

Nine assists, team-wide, for the game. WTF?

We cannot outrebound a team with no true 4-man, never mind no center? WTF?

This feels to me like a long, long season.

Honestly the game last night looks similar to the Arizona and Iowa State games from last year's tournament. The talent level difference was negated through shots not falling and rebounding issues.

I happen to agree with you. They're in the top 10 and projected as a 3 seed, I don't see it. I don't see consistent scoring on this team beyond the 55ppg level. If they can win games by only scoring 55 points per game, be my guest and I love good defense, but I don't think they have enough consistent scoring offensively on the inside to really be more than the 4th or 5th best team in the Big Ten. Matta has pulled the rabbit out of his hat in the past, but we'll just have to wait and see.

And yes, the 41%/27% from the field/3 and 9 assists (especially with 3 of those coming to alley oops to Thompson, how often do you think they'll get those in Big Ten play?) are reasons for concern given how perimeter heavy this team is yet again. How I wish Amir would morph into Terence Dials or Greg Oden or Sully overnight.

I agree that there's a lot of cause for concern, and think we're over ranked being in the top 10, but I will just enjoy the games until we hit conference play. I don't have high hopes for this year's team and will wait for them to show me something before I get excited.
