tOSU vs Missouri, Goodyear Cotton Bowl, Friday Dec. 29, 8 ET on ESPN

One of your few takes I agree with. I was in the "don't need a portal QB" camp. but if Devin is hurt as bad as I fear he is, it's going to mean off season surgery and most likely a longer recovery. That's going to set him back. That means a competition between a revering Brown, Sophmore Kienholz and a true frosh Noland. Knowing that OSU hasn't started a season with a true frosh since Art Schlichter in 1978 means QB is going to be an issue. ( yes I know that Braxton And Pryor both started in their freshman years but they took over mid-season)

Ugh, 1978. The true freshman got shut out in week one, scored 3 against TTUN, and it all came crashing down in Woody's last game.

A season like that in 2024 (7 wins in 12 games) would be a disaster in this era.

I am doing a game recap as painful as it is so I can ruin @LordJeffBuck 's high end happy hour:

1. 3 points is flat out unacceptable. Goes without saying that you can't win with 3 points and as was the case in many of the games this year, the offense put the defense in a very difficult spot. Pretty much every chink in our armor got exposed on offense from the coaches to the players.

2. Offensive line play was the most atrocious I have seen at Ohio State and that is not an exaggeration. I have no idea how to evaluate either QB because they had absolutely no chance out there pretty much every play. It looked like Week 1 out there where there is no communication or cohesion, and they got beat physically on top of all that. Simmons looked like he regressed back to Week 1 in particular. The Stud recruiting woes are rearing their ugly heads and I don't think Frye is capable of fixing it. DL recruiting woes are next up in line and being destroyed in the trenches is a bad direction to be headed.

3. At QB, Devin got hurt pretty early on but in limited action I still don't have much confidence in him. As for LK, he had no chance with the OL play but he was totally unprepared...I place that all on the coaches for not having him ready to go. We had all season and then a month of bowl prep to have him ready knowing McCord is gone. WTF. You shouldn't have to "shrink the playbook" at all at this point. Dennis needs to go and we need to bring in a real QB coach...talent is there but we are not developing or preparing it.

4. On defense, really a hell of a game and can't fault them at all. They made play after play but had no help, so eventually they wore down and any defense would have. Sawyer is really coming into the player we thought he would be as a highly rated 5* recruit...hope him and Sawyer are back next year, my lord we need them. Burke and Hancock played pretty much lights out, can't complain about effort from them or really any of the defense. Knowles and the whole defensive staff get another year (sans possibly getting LJ Sr a transition strategy), they aren't the problem.

5. On special teams, we had several more mental errors and this better have been Fleming's last game as a coach here. Only bright spot was Mirco did a much better job punting.

6. Overall - Obviously this game was bad, bad, bad. I wouldn't say painful really because not much was at stake (as opposed to losses like ttun, playoff games, and upset games in the past that cost us an actual championship). The only painful part to me is potential ramifications for the future. We have a lot of "bad looks" across the board. The OL looks horrible and I worry that skilled position players will be more hesitant to come here with that issue, and the fact that the offense this year mostly did not perform to recent standards. I don't believe either of Dennis or Frye should be back next season. Then after we recruit all this talent at QB, we have McCord leave and we likely have to go into the portal...looks bad to QB recruits.

On defense, we look great and hopefully we get everyone back that we think are coming back. But there is a huge impending problem at DL that will surface either this season if we don't get a bunch of guys back, or the season after. I can see DL being as big of a problem as the OL has become and if it does, we may be looking at some bleak seasons. Not trying to be doom and gloom, but it is reality.

What is the fix? Just my opinion of course, but I think the fix is going to take a lot of changes. Fleming needs to go and we know that, promote JL to that position so he can actually go on the road and recruit...eventually he will be our LB coach most likely. Get a succession plan for LJ Sr and be transparent this is his last year as the lead DL coach, but find a way to keep him around the facilities and players. We need to raid the portal for DL after only landing two DL in the '24 class and fumbling on the '23 class at DE.

Frye needs to go, he has not met expectations at any level. He has not landed recruits other than guys that were coming here no matter what, the results on the field are terrible, and he is supposed to be the "run coordinator" and we can't run the ball when it matters. Part of it is inheriting Stud's recruiting mishaps, but we have enough there to do much better than we are doing. Often times the line is not communicating or recognizing the defense, it is not just getting beat on blocks. He is also missing on prospects he was brought in to recruit with his connections. Time to move on there.

And I hate to say this, but I am ready to move on from Day. He is going to get another year, but he better make a lot of changes/improvements mentioned above (and maybe others, what the hell do I know?). And he needs to be almost perfect to get extended. He needs to (in order) beat ttun, win a B1G championship, be a top seed in the CFP, and make the national title. Given his abysmal performances against ttun and in bowl games, nothing short of that warrants another year because I won't believe he can achieve it otherwise. I'll give the guy credit, he admits the high standard at OSU and that they haven't achieved it - but his superiors at some point have to admit it too and take action if it is not corrected.

Harsh review, but that is how I see the lay of the land after that game. Going to be a long way to the spring game from here, but as always Go Bucks.

Ha ha that would be a big no, but then again you don’t need to be in the red zone to run a zone read. Would have thought that would be a natural play call with LK.
I don’t think there was enough time to run anything but three step drop back and try and dink and dunk your way way downfield. Mizous LBs were not bothering to drop into pass defense.

If even we would have done that. LK was bailing in the shotgun the second the ball was snapped. I was more interested in a zone read run with Hendo or Hayden then a pass.

Re: point 2. Check the stats for 1965 @ MSU. Point 3. Texas QB came to Columbus for one year of free lessons, saw how backups were treated and went right back to Texas? Absolutely no excuse to not have two QBs ready for any game, especially a bowl game.
