Buckeyes Hold on for Win Over Falcons
By John Porentas

OSU guard Jon Diebler scored 17 points and Buckeye center Dallas Lauderdale blocked six shots to help the Buckeyes hold off a determined rally by the Bowling Green Falcons (3-2) and hang on for a 61-57 win over the visitors from from Northwest Ohio.
The Buckeyes (2-0) led throughout most the game and led by six at the half. They extended their lead to 13 in the second half on a jump shot by freshman William Buford to make the score 38-25 with 16:40 remaining in the game.
The Falcons refused to die and staged a determined rally sparked by a 10-1 run that saw the score go from 40-27 with 15:13 remaining to 41-37 with 13:16 still left on the clock.

I agree with what quite a few of you have said regarding the team being young. However, I think we have to remember that 3 of these guys saw considerable minutes last year and from Turner and Lighty I saw the same mistakes from them that I saw last year. Getting caught up in the air with nothing to do with the ball except turn it over. Very frustrating.

I really think that this team is relying on the three-point shot too much and it will come to bite them down the road. More guys has to put it on the floor and taken to the rim and either score or get an assist.

The zone defense is once again killing us when it comes to rebounding. I have not looked at the stats but I would think that our offensive rebounds were at a minimal. I just don't know who Thad is trying to hide playing the zone defense.

I know that we are only 2 games into the season but they really need to start learning or they're going to get whacked by the better teams in the nonconference schedule.

DVDed the game and watched it after work last night, so I was half asleep during the viewing.

Dallas continued to look like a force on the defensive end, but picked up a couple of cheap fouls, hopefully mistakes from inexperience that he will learn from. Offensively has a long way to go, but cannot fault the effort at all.

Deibs looked good early looking to drive and dish or take it to the rack, also seemed to continue some pretty good shooting. He seems to be the only one who looks to pass the ball into the post with any consistency. Played pretty good defense, but can't have sophomore lapses on D.

Turner has not played his best the first two games. He still makes some of the same mistakes, as others have stated, and has not carried over his stellar play from the NIT. He too needs to keep the intensity up constantly on the defensive end.

Lighty plays very good defense, but is out of position at the four. I have not been overly impressed, so far, with his supposed improved range and offensive game. He needs to work on driving and dishing as well.

Simmons plays more of a combo guard role (I know, we knew that coming into the season) he plays pretty good defense, but also needs consistency and on offense, he needs to look to feed the post as well as using his strength as a shooter to help him get into a zone, or get by a defender.

Buford plays a pretty good game but also plays like a freshman often. He needs to play under control and also play with more consistent effort on defense, this should come with experience as he is only two game into his career.

Mullins needs work on his footwork both offensively and defensively, but it is obvious the potential is there. I think with a little work on footwork and a dose of good play helping his confidence and he will become a major force.

Crater also needs to become more consistent and use his quicks to get into the gaps in the zone and work on driving and dishing, a dose of confidence will do him wonders as well.

As a team, I saw pretty good defense at times, but a lot of single lapses by single players that ruined good play by the other four, all seemed to have some oopses so this will just take some work by all. Offensively, there was way to much passing on the perimeter with little or no effort to pass or dribble into the zone, if the Buckeyes do not shoot better and continue to settle for 3's without playing inside out, they will lose some games that they shouldn't.

Game 2 in review

I just finished an OSU Insider that will run in Wednesday?s paper. It addresses some but not all of what I saw in the first two games against Delaware State and Bowling Green. I haven?t had a chance to watch the tape of the BG game yet to get a better read on what?s not happening on offense and defense, but here are some thoughts on that and other issues that coach Thad Matta and the players were asked about after the game.

- The offense doesn?t know how to attack a zone defense, which Delaware State played the entire game and Bowling Green went to for the last 31 minutes. Too much passing around the perimeter instead of passing in and out of it to find an open man. As a result, the Buckeyes settle for too many three-point shots.

Right on the money IMO. They need to get the ball inside with either passing or dribble penetration. They cannot continue to just be satisfied shooting treys:(

Right now we aren't going to get a lot of inside scoring so, that is why the 3's are being fired up...

I think we need to try and get out more in transistion, we have big guys that can run and we need to take advantage of our 4guard lineup...

The 3's are fine as we have a very good shooting team...I feel confident when Diebler, Simmons, Buford, Lighty, or Turner fire one up there...

You know and I know that when we start playing tougher competition if we tried to live by the 3 ball we will also die by the 3 ball. The guards need to get some dribble penetration for some easier shots. Agree with the fact that if we can get out in transition for easy baskets that will help but it is easier said than done. Dallas and BJ reading need to start being more proficient when it comes to scoring. We need to get easy baskets or we will be in for a long season IMO

Please deliver me from this tired and horribly inaccurate cliche.

You take the shot the defense gives you. It makes no more sense to say you will live and die by the free throw, or live and die by the midrange jumper. :roll1:
