Speaking of the announcers...loved listening to JJ! One of my all time favorites! Talk about a scorer!
JJ is still my all-time favorite... it was great to hear him reminisce about Jamaal Brown, Mark Baker, Treg Lee and Perry Carter. I also enjoy Gus Johnson's play-by-play announcing... a good tandem to listen to.

Anyone else baffled by Buford's absence from the lineup down the stretch?

I'm guessing its Defense. If you are going to play zone (Dear Lord please don't let it be all season again) everyone needs to play their assignment. He made some great defensive plays, but I couldn't tell you if he was missing assignments or not.

When has it ever been okay to dribble into a double team and just jump into the air with nothing to do with the ball? Time and time again, Lighty and Turner have drove into the paint and jumped with nothing to do with the ball and turn it over. Correct me if im wrong, but isn't this fundamental taught at an early age?

Lighty and Turner are both pivotal players for this team to win, but I just cant understand why they continue to do this...

.

Yeah, some crummy decisions by those two in particular. But in their defense, our guys seemed to do a lot of standing around on the offensive end of the floor. Not nearly enough movement to get decent shots.

Several trips down the floor it seemed like all they did was pass around the perimeter and then someone would try a crazy drive with no one to pass to. I didn't see a whole lot inside out passing either. The ball didn't go into the post enough and when it did it didn't seem to get kicked out.

Young team, very early, lots to work on. But definately got the talent to do some great things. It's just going to take some gelling. I don't think Thad really knows their roles yet, so I doubt the guys do. :) They'll get it.

Buford definitely struggled some in the zone defense. I remember at least twice in the second half where he didn't rotate down quickly enough to the corner and let BG hit a wide open three pointer on him.

Diebler was phenomonal tonight... would be interested to see his +/-, although he only sat for 3 minutes I think we were about -8 in those three minutes. Hope he is conditioned well enough to play this much during the rest of the season, because honestly I don't feel comfortable when he isn't out on the floor right now. I dont see anyone else feeding the post (even though our post game is limited we have to try to establish it) and I just feel like he brings a calming presence to the team when he is out there.

year two of that for evan. 5 tos. to many. he needs to play with competitive composure. he cant force it and he cant lose control like he did on a few occassions. he needs to be a stabalizing force, he needs to realize the level he is expected to play at and the stability he needs to bring to the floor. he jokingly got the nickname on here from me of evan turnover last year.

yes, you should learn that somewhere around a bounce pass and the drop step...

Lighty and Turner are both pivotal players for this team to win, but I just cant understand why they continue to do this...

bad habits are hard to break. sometimes pine is the best coach...

It was great to see Diebler show some flashes of his high school years, the last time he did that was against North Carolina last year...

one game a player does not make, building block. jon used his defense to generate offense early, (i sound like im reading from the hitchionary). jon rebounded and created transition, he reaped what he sowed.

Lauderdale has 13 blocks in 2 games...these are Ken Johnson stats he is putting up early on in the season...

3 of those blocks he was out of position. hard to teach a kid, especially a young one who is having success he made a great play by being in the wrong place, luckily he gave up some easy lay ups.

I also question why Buford was not in down the stretch...he showed tonight that he belongs on the floor...

he got beat down the floor twice, next dead ball he was out.

I know this is early in the season, but I am just baffled at the slow transition Mullens is having from high school to college...
positioning. it is that simple. six inches is the difference from good positioning to a hard shot. bj's positioning isnt good. his footwork needs improvement. the best thing to point to was when he was out of position on the entry last night, he then made some sort of move, no idea what is was squaring up and proceeded to get blocked/tied up. that move worked against buckeye local, it wont work against bg, needless to say bg. bj looked frustrated a couple times last night once i noticed matta acknowledge this, another time he came off the bench sat next to diebler, they sat their 15 secs or so and jon covered his mouth and turned to him, obviously saying something, he then gave him a light bump. i also felt late in the game matta walked his bench and bj looked disengaged, was he looking to make the move and felt bj had disengaged (somethign young players will do when they struggle), hard to tell.

bad positioning by the post players
not getting the ball in enough
poor entry passes and poor entry angles
not kicking the ball out-and also when its kicked out not getting it back in (im a huge, huge believer in entry, kick out, quick reset, entry, easy basket).
poor footwork

i dont think they know their roles yet either, we went 8 deep last night. that is about what i expected. roles are earned, not given.

Color me exasperated by the play at both ends. I know they're still a young team, but a lot of the frustration was with the veterans. Too many lapses in focus/energy on the defensive end. Too much standing around on offense. Too many turnovers, not just turnovers, but bad turnovers leading to quick transition. Beat up on the glass. (Harangody may get 30 rebounds against OSU.)

I'll take the win, but there is a LOT of work to be done.

Announcers talking about Diebler being from Upper Sandusky and then talking about Cedar Point. Upper Sandusky is about an hour and a half south of Sandusky where Cedar Point is located. I guess neither have been there. :) Side note: Never understood why Upper Sandusky is south of Sandusky.

Upper Sandusky is up river of Sandusky along the, you guessed it, Sandusky River.

Knowledge is power!

This game was exactly what they needed..........They were challenged and made a few plays to win a close game......Matta will break down the film and he has a ton of work to do...........

Turner continues to turn the ball over when he forces shots.......he needs to start taking what the defense is giving him which is the mid range shot and not take it at three defenders.......flip side was that he was very on defense.....

Lighty is being asked to do some new things on defense and play a different position......he will come around.....I love his defense and close out on shooters......fights for every rebound despite his lack of size.....

Simmons is solid........I think he will grow as the season goes on......

Diebler........great performance and it is great to see.........some of us were asking why he didn't use the dribble more last week......and viola! He gets past a few defenders and the whole floor opens up for him.......his defense was solid as well..........

Lauderdale........He is quickly turning into a defensive force in the lane.........offense is still a work in progress......needs to continue to work on his footwork.........free throws need work......to much ball movement prior to taking a free throw.....

Crater.......I like his energy...........

Buford........just oozes talent.......I might be going out on a limb.....but I believe by the time the Big Ten portion of the schedule rolls around he will be a force as he gets more comfortable on the offense end..........

Finally, lets talk about Mullens.............simply ineffective on both ends of the court last night........clearly frustrated.........He has to learn that he cannot just simply turn around and shoot without using his size and length.....he will come around but I am somewhat suprised by his lack of production on the offensive end in the first two games.......

College basketball

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State men's basketball team gave up a 13-point lead and trailed twice in the last 7 minutes tonight but escaped an upset bid by Bowling Green with a 61-57 victory in Value City Arena.
Jon Diebler scored 17 points and Evan Turner had 12 to lead the Buckeyes (2-0), who nearly were beaten by the Falcons in Columbus for the second time in a row. Bowling Green won at Ohio State in 1994 in St. John Arena.
Brian Moten had 16 points and Darryl Clements 13 to lead Bowling Green (3-2).

A BIG DIFFERENCE
Bowling Green's mens basketball have no answer for Lauderdale

COLUMBUS - They exited the visiting locker room at Value City Arena with their heads drooped and their conversations hardly audible as they prepared to load the team bus.

Bowling Green State University had just battled Ohio State valiantly and with a little good fortune might have been able to pull off a magnificent upset over the Buckeyes. But BG didn't win - it lost 61-57 - and as a result no one was smiling, shaking hands, or talking about how good this result looks.

So what does it say when a Mid-American Conference team, one that has had three straight losing seasons, is bummed after nearly knocking off a team like Ohio State?

"It shows that we're ready to turn that corner," senior guard Brian Moten said. "That's what we've been aiming for, to just turn this program around, to get back to winning."

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
OSU holds off BG

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- The most re cent time Ohio State played Bowling Green in men's basketball, 14 years ago, Ohio State lost. On Sept. 6, when Ohio State's football team was losing to Ohio University at halftime, OSU basketball coach Thad Matta text-messaged his players with a MAC warning.
There was reason to worry.
Bowling Green pushed the Buckeyes to the brink Monday night, missing a tying 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, before Ohio State hung on for a 61-57 win.

This team has zero focus on the defensive side. Is it me or does this team have a very bad zone? They lose track of who's in their area and give up corner shots routinely. Reminds me of Pryor in the Michigan game of not keeping his head on a swivel when he got drilled off the edge.

ALWAYS keep your head moving. Even the quickest of glances could mean disrupting a long 3 from the edges or stopping a penetrating move to the hole. I get so annoyed with flat footed defense it drives me insane. I would rather have a stiffening defense and no O than no D and an ok O.

Mullens looks sort of lost too. I dont believe BG had any real inside opposition to counter our height (obvious with Dallas dominating) but Mullens just couldn't get anything together. I know he's a freshman but I really do expect more from him, not utter frustration and cluelessness like I saw lastnignt. Im hoping it was just an abberation.

Gotta hand it to Bowling Green, they came to play and pushed Ohio State for all 40 minutes

when the game was on the line they stepped up and made the plays they had to though

gotta remember that this team is still young and breaking in new people at the PG position

it will get better as the season goes on
