Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Starting to get a lil nervous for this one. For one thing, I think Tech is going to be a 9-10 win team this year. Beating a good team at home is never easy, obviously. And then I also think they pose some matchup difficulty for us---they have one of the better defensive lines in the country. I don't think we can flat dominate them up front. And we will only have 1 proven wide receiver in this game. Thomas will make some plays, but if they match up Fuller on him, that is a matchup that could go either way.

I think JT needs to start this game. His skill set is more in line with what we need from the QB in this particular game in terms of a running threat and getting the ball out quick and accurately on short passes to unproven pass catchers.

They need to actually have a strong year before they get the benefit of the doubt. Their qb and h backs made a ton of spectacular plays that they did not make later in the year, let alone so frequently.

Their defense will pose a challenge to overcome. I'm not buying that their offense can make that many rare plays a second time. If Bosa were playing, I would be certain that the postseason defense would eat them alive. With three new starters upfront, it will be more concerning until they prove themselves.

I don't mind Virginia Tech. I don't begrudge them for beating Ohio State last year. But Ohio State needs to take revenge. Kick their asses right in the nuts and leave with their women.

(But then leave their women in West Virginia.)
I agree. I don't begrudge them at all. Mostly because I think it gave them the kick in the pants they needed. Unlike last year riding a 24 game win streak until the end of the season caused too much confidence. I think there is a chance that had they beaten vt and then just beat the crap out of the big ten then we would have played FSU. Then going in to play Bama at 14-0 after just destroying FSU and wisky... it could have turned out differently. Not saying probably but that isn't crazy to think.

You are right in that Va TEch has a good defense. But OSU's defense should be able to keep Va Tech from putting many points on the board.

Frank Beamer is going into his 29th season as VT head coach (since 1987). During that time, VT has allowed 40+ points at home a grand total of three times, and not once since 1995.

42 points (Virginia 1994, Rutgers 1993)
41 points (FSU, 1989)

Putting up 42+ points on them would literally be historic...

And how many times have they had the #1 team in the nation at their place? They are hyping this game up to be the biggest home game at Lane Stadium ever.....so it shows they haven't had a quality opponent like OSU in there in a while. Should be a good test for our offense. I definitely feel this will be our lowest offensive scoring output of the year and will end up far below our scoring average for the season if u consider it's the 1st game, suspensions, road game at night in a hostile environment, Tech's traditionally good defenses. But, like some others have said, in the end, I think our defense stops their inexperienced offenses more often than their defense can slow down our explosive and experienced offense.

When teams go into Lane and win it is because the opposition's defense is overwhelming. I remember 2005 against Miami they had game day in town, night game, highly anticipated, tech was high ranked with Marcus Vick leading them, and it ended with my best friend punching my futon sofa and driving home at half time because it was over in a hurry. That night tech had no answer for Miami's fast and disruptive defense and to win this game it has to be much the same way.

We all get carried away with our offense and all the weapons we have but when a team prides itself so heavily on defense (a experienced one to boot) then normally you have to leave no doubt in field position, turnovers, and with your own defense. We will score but if folks think we are getting 40+ points on the turkey's it's probably unlikely but then again like mentioned I don't like tech's odds against our defense neither.

Before the suspensions, I think it was a given that we'd score 40+. More likely into the 50s...
Now, maybe 30s is more likely but I don't think 40+ is too much of a stretch. Just too many weapons. Gonna have to shake some rust off, see how Warriner fairs being an OC again, etc.
Gotta figure they're going load the box with 9 again hoping to contain the power run game. So we're gonna see how the receiving corps (including Brax, Samuel, and possibly Parris) is coming along early.

exactly my point... we are missing 3 WR's now for the game which makes their defense creep forward even more and because of that I think it's not likely we score 40. Would I be surprised if we did? No, because simply since Urban has taken over we seem to always approach 50 every game. As has been pointed out by Mili there's no precedence at all for OSU to score 40 in Lane Stadium and you combine that with tech probably having one of their best defenses ever with a great DC and I feel it's probably not very likely.

For payback sake I hope it ends 35-21 for the good guys

If I go out on a limb and guess that JT starts... barring a repeat of last year's dropsies... I think the distributor can consistently get the ball to a corp of Thomas, Brown, Dixon, Samuel, Brax, Parris, Vannett, Baugh, Greene, McLaurin, Stump, and Hill.
Especially against man coverage on islands.

I wouldn't go that far. Their defense gave up over 20 ppg last year...their 2004 and 2005 defenses gave up under 13 ppg, and their 2006 defense gave up under 11 ppg while holding seven opponents to 7 or less points including four shutouts. Their defense last year also gave up 30+ at home in consecutive games (Duh U and BC). I'm not all that concerned...

Meyer, talking to Beamer during the pre-game chat at midfield: "Did you see a sign that said 'Dead Hokie Storage' when you came into the stadium?". Yeah, I did just get done watching Pulp Fiction...

And there you have the one thing that's skulking around in the shadows when I think of this game--two in a row that were won despite awful turnovers that would normally be disastrous. Yes, a powerful team was able to overcome those mistakes, but it was at the end of the season at the peak of their game. I hope it's been corrected in the last seven months. Just find the combination of rust and the question of whether dropsi-itis have been exorcised to be a little concerning--especially added to playing in a hostile, emotionally over-amped environment.

Then again, a repeat of hanging 59-0 on the home guys wouldn't shock either. Who knows what this team has grown into--we sure didn't know last year.
