I’m with you on that. On one end, it sucks to lose these big name recruits, but then when Day is able to retain the entire roster, im excited by that. I don’t expect a high paid true freshman in many positions to contribute much their first year. but the returning player at that the same position could become much more valuable in the short term. Does anyone think that David Sanders starts this year over Siereveld and Daniel’s? And if he did, would we feel comfortable with a true frosh LT In game 1 against Texas?I mean, is anyone under the impression that feedback along those lines hasn’t already been thoroughly presented to Day? It feels dumb as well to think we know something he doesn’t that’s this obvious.
The budget management is what drives the culture a la talent retention. You start overpaying for unproven freshmen that’s when your waiting in wings players bolt when their time is up.
I don’t think you can have it both ways. Look at the schools that have been paying excess dollars since NIL started - some have already seen coaching changes,
I don’t know. It’s hard for me to feel some sort of way about it yet - at least until it becomes obvious that we are losing games because of an obvious talent disparity.
I can assure you that Day and Pantoni have spoken to every admin in the athletic department and every big name with the collective. The strategy (for now) has been chosen. prioritize keeping the roster in tact. And that strategy has made sure that guys like Inniss, Tate, Matthews, Reese, Jackson, etc remained in S&G and didn’t hit the Portal. Would we want to see some high priced freshman replace any of those names? Because that would easily be the alternative. The people that need to hear that aren’t paying attention to Austin and Birm. Day and Pantoni need to make that case to the right folks.
If that is truly the strategy right now I expect us to be right back where we need to be in recruiting next cycle. Because if not, that means problems down the line. It already might mean that anyways.I’m with you on that. On one end, it sucks to lose these big name recruits, but then when Day is able to retain the entire roster, im excited by that. Where does the talent come from in a couple of years when the current guys are out of eligibility?I’m with you on that. That's the issueWhere does the talent come from in a couple of years when the current guys are out of eligibility?

I'd feel better about it if they took some risks on prospects to bolster class size. This was supposed to be a 25+ size class and right now it's 21 with major needs at edge and at least one more corner. Last year there was the kid that went to Warren Harding who needed a lot of time for development, but they might as well take guys like that and if necessary they can transfer out. As long as they know how long they need to develop, that's not a bad thing.
Balancing roster retention, recruiting, and the portal is difficult, and so far Day has done a good job, especially in the last few years. Trying to use it to fill recruiting holes every year is a bad idea, though. It should be a last resort and unless they can figure something out with edge in this class, they're going to have to hit on a bunch of transfers in the next few years.
One thing I'd note is that "commitments" at this point aren't real, and that we almost certainly have more late poaching potential than the middle-tier programs that are "stealing" kids from us with big bags right now. Let's see if maybe there's a three-part strategy to: (1) Hold off on matching big bags and having to set the market and defend our "commits" all year long (and maybe annoying current, proven players before they're well into and focused on the season); See what we can get for now without breaking the bank with decent but not market setting NIL, the brand, promises of development, culture, etc.; and (3) Fill in deficiencies later by matching or exceeding the bags of "committed" kids we like and who we know like us (like Womack if he "commits" to Auburn soon) right before the signing deadline and not having to have others drive up the price more while they're committed to us but unsigned. This would also have the advantage of getting more film on the prospects and shortening the window for injury risk.Yeah, it's more the general approach that concerns me.
Transfer portal and retaining experienced guys are complimentary/adjacent strategies but the only real pipeline in this industry for player talent is high school players. Intentionally not spending enough to get your fair share of the top talent is the same as intentionally not recruiting top talent pre NIL.
Why take on the extra risk of having to be a scout and develop team when you have resources to compete for the elite guys?
I would also love to hear those conversations with the big names in the collective...I can assure you that Day and Pantoni have spoken to every admin in the athletic department and every big name with the collective. Im sure the major push back by some is "hey we won a Natty the current way, if ain't broke don't fix it"I would also love to hear those conversations with the big names in the collective...
Maybe someone could fill in details of the suppliers of money but I picture a collective with at least three investor types.
1. Generous philanthropists, love the product, not concerned with receiving personal benefits.
2. Investors I.e. bagmen who want to see the team excel and give into a pool, trusting coaches decisions for distribution.
3. Corporate boards anticipating market value for the name, image, likeness of athletes.
Solely based on some losses in the bidding wars for recruits, It appears the Buckeye athletic department is trying to hold true to the language of NIL and offer genuine options for the third type of investors.
