2026 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Honestly do we really want any player who would commit to scUM right now with everything going on there? Seems like there's only one thing on the mind there ($$$$)I hope this doesn't count as "recruit bashing" in this forum but it seems like a legit question.
I kinda agree. We've never been able to be this selective before and it's awesome.

Do read that tOSU is putting out $35 mill for players this year. Do wonder how much is for guys already on roster, and how much for the incoming freshmen. Hearing some of the numbers for the #1 OT of $2.2 mill, seems extraordinary to someone who was offered books & supplies to play basketball in the late 60's.

EDGE players seem to be getting the most insane NIL offers outside of QB. We are going to have trouble landing top EDGE guys because of that and that's just something we are going to have to get used to and do other things to make up for. It does seem like we are focusing more on guys on the roster than giving blank check type offers to HS kids, which I think plays well in the long run but we are going to take our lumps on the recruiting trail when it comes to last minute bag swoop ins (See Wafle for example)

It really seems like this year is an anomaly. We are obviously spending as much as anyone out there (35M) yet the staff has made the decision to place those dollars elsewhere on the roster. Stings now but I do believe they made the right choice ....

Certain schools are just going to keep flinging crazy money at any HS kids that will take it until they stumble into it actually working (The USC, Texas A&M & Miami's of the world) I think the real players (Outside of Oregon) have already figured out that that is not the way though. You have to find a good balance between giving money to HS kids, using money on guys already on the roster and to keep that roster retained year to year, and strategically using the transfer portal.

It's going to become more of a game of who can evaluate and develop HS guys in the like 150+ ranking range the best. The crazy bag swingers are causing the top end guys to be more spread out than before, so the real battle for the real annual national title contenders is going to be here.

"Insiders" are taking a beating this year, their predictions seem less meaningful than ever. No that their word was ever 100% gospel but they REALLY seem to have no real beat about what's actually going on currently.

This morning they were blowing smoke (The famous Mr Fong included) that PJ Dean's offer to UGA was not even committable and he was going to South Carolina because of that......Dean promptly committed to Georgia.

Yeah because they can no longer predict commitments based on relationships When money is involved. I’m sure LJsr lands a MUCH a higher rate of guys at the top of his list if money wasn’t involved. But since it is, it’s very hard to predict, because with large sums of money come family, agents, etc who can easily sway these kids decisions. And for many in that circle, they don’t care if the kid is developed or goes to a school who competes for an NC as long as they get their cut.

Relationships are still important but moreso for transfer targets in a year or two.
I think the number of transfers could dramatically decrease with the buyout rule. It’s one thing to flip a kid like Beau Atkinson and then sign him to an OSU NiL, it’s much different when you also must buyout his NIL contract from UNC. Now imagine trying to buyout a kid like Luke Wafle who’s getting a deal that could make a 7 figure buyout, and then you still need to offer your own NIL deal. Idk how many are going to test that, and idk how many programs and their NiL collectives want to pay that much constantly for what are going to be unknowns.
Also, if a kid wants to transfer after 1 year at a school and can’t even crack the starting lineup at his first school, do you want to take the next crack at kid? You’re putting him in a new system, dealing with even more issues off the field in a new environment (away from family, classes, city, dumb decisions with a lot of money, etc)

Half the posts you read in support of not paying the going rate for HS kids is that you can just wait a couple years and get them in the portal.

Talent is going to get paid somewhere.
