2026 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Guess we fanatics will see if the scatter gun approach works better than the rifled approach. Maybe the bigger the net, the better the catch? Running out of analogies here.....Will be curious to see how well tOSU transfers (out!) do with their new teams. Fleeing from the Buckeyes to ?, and starting/becoming all league with new team, might be an indicator of how well the OL program is run? Dunno, idle speculation, methinks. Of course, the writers all tout what tOSU has in the OL team room, with nothing negative said about them, but that's the nature of being an Ohio State beat writer. But something is keeping those guys off the field, am thinking.
The rifled approach can work if a schools NIL is ready to spend massive amounts on a HS OL. But with OL needing 5 starters, and the OL being such a crap shoot at the HS level, imo the “scatter gun” approach is more beneficial. Frye was a very good developer but had a very rough time acquiring the talent needed to keep his OL at an elite level. OSU will need a blend of 5-6 HS recruits and another 3+ from the Portal in order to sustain talent levels. Especially with the CFP adding upwards of 4 additional games.

Exactly why I am glad we didn't get into a bidding war on Sanders...yeah, he is a great talent. But I like Carter Lowe about the same and he comes without that price tag. The shotgun approach works just fine now on OL and the portal, which we have hit very successfully in recent years on OL. I was in a mild state of panic with Frye's recruiting, but he meshed those two things well and developed guys.

I think Bowen is a better recruiter, but he can replicate the general process. I'll admit that Guthrie stings for me, but a 5 man position group doesn't make it the end of the world. Especially if Riley and Greer are both part of this OL class, from there we will sort out the rest.

Never really gave a thought to which position on the field is more 'accident prone'. Hate it when it happens (to anyone on any team). Depth is a large key, and hopefully, the gap between a 1 and a 2 isn't monumental, so more of a 'plug and play' may occur. Guess last year showed all of us why the cross-training of OL was important. Having such a talent as Donovan made the switch easy, doubt that anyone predicted that he'd become such a great LT. Certainly agree that OL projections are the hardest to make, given the disparity between HS talent levels. And might also say that development of the OL is harder and takes longer than that of a QB. Also seems like the loosening of numbers of assistants (or whatever title they carry now), means that schools can add various developer-type coaches to staff, while limiting the off-campus recruiting numbers.

Bowen, Charles Dickey and Marcus Johnson are all going to be involved in recruiting offensive linemen for Ohio State moving forward and the message for the Brede now is just to continue growing his relationship with that trio until the Buckeyes can see him work out in person.

"They said they really like me, they like my size and versatility to play tackle and guard, how I play," he said. "He told me he is very close to offering but he wants to see me work out at my school in the next couple weeks. They are looking for improvement in hip mobility and just watching me move."

Maybe this has been done somewhere in the forum, what's the numbers look like for each position and who the candidates are.
Is your question how many offers are there per each position? Or how many will they sign per each position?
And tbh, I’ve been asking almost daily who candidates are and because of new coaches, NIL and the Portal those names are constantly fluid tbh.

For example, outside of Akih, not one insider can say a name of another viable option. Though none would be surprised if any in the top 10 commit. NIL with no rules has made recruiting an immense pain. And that’s with Day and staff showing off a brand new trophy. Another team can offer 7 figures, a condo and a house for their family along with cars for anyone the recruit wants. That trophy no longer matters in that scenario

How many we get at each. It's always a crap shoot but since we typically start fast in the spring which we are behind the eight ball. I was curious if there was a list people were starting to compile.

Here's a rough draft from what I've seen repeatedly:
QB- 1
RB- 2
WR- 4
TE- 2
OL- 6-7
DL-5-7
LB- 3
DB- 5-7

A bigger class, because there's a number of guys who could leave early. And OL NEEDS a large number in this class to make up for the past lack of numbers

Might suggest that the total composition of the team flows along similar lines as to pnuts list. with plusses and minuses based on what the position coach sees in the current group make-up. Plus projections for current year starters, injuries etc. Not certain I could do this, but that's kinda what these guys do. Add in a new NIL element, plus a projection (?) of players that are being passed by new recruits, simply do not see how an absolute formula could be written. Pretty obvious last year's OL got hit by the injury bug - season ending, versus nicks and bruises, that either more were needed, or more development needed. Might also suggest that the increase in 'assistant coaches' will increase the coach-to-recruit ratio, meaning that there's more one-on-one facetime being given to the recruits to train them up.

I'd say I'm going to do a Rip van Winkle, and sleep for three years, then wake up to see how the OL recruits are doing. But wouldn't be true, because am too big a fan to not watch Buckeye Football as much as possible. I harken back to the Brew Crew, which was way above average, but also recollect that four of the five recruits were 5*s, with the last a high 4*. They played well, certainly, but (and memory is a bit hazy), they didn't win a Natty. Oh, typing got ahead of brain....common wisdom says that cannot really tell about an OL until 2-4 years down the road (or other recruits).

Time flies, and that 3yrs will arrive faster than you can think. For example: Hinzman, Siereveld, Padilla, Montgomery and Tshabola have all been at OSU for 3-4yrs. At least half of these guys could be gone by the end of the season. We're going to finish the season and the Armstrong twins, Van Sickle, Lowe, McFadden and Cook would've been at OSU for 3yrs themselves, And Daniels at OSU for 1yr but in college for 3.
