When people talk about CBs playing as true frosh, look at the size difference between a true frosh Aaron Scott and a Sophomore Jermaine Matthews. There is quite the size difference. Scott is 1in shorter than Devin Sanchez, but same weight. Same height as Offord but slightly heavier. Matthews is the same size as Scott by numbers, but you can tell that he has considerably more muscle. And that is a big aid when defending larger and/or more physical WRs. HS DBs haven’t built up the muscle to be able to jam WRs at the collegiate level and usually need at least a year to get up to speed but also to build up the strength to fight Wars at the LOS and also in coverage when WRs can use their bodies to box out CBs

Schools have an option of spending their money on unproven recruits or investing in proven assets from the portal.

Perhaps we are trending towards the latter.
Agreed. I think in this day and age it's a three-pronged approach.

#1 - roster retention of key players
#2 - spending money in the transfer portal
#3 - recruiting

The order may change year to year depending on needs.

#1 and #2 might flip but I think recruiting should always be the 3rd on the list. As long as we finish in or at least close to the top 5 in recruiting (which we still will) we can easily supplement the rest in the portal. People are going to have a meltdown because the #1 class is going to be much less attainable now but recruiting while obviously still important means less than ever.

This has been my entire outlook on modern day recruiting. The #1 class for HS no longer matters, because that school has to spend a bulk of their NIL on HSers, and has little for the Portal guys. A successful team needs to find a balance. Both methods are a crapshoot, but with one you’re literally working with a teenager that is a mound of clay, guys in the Portal have been molded a little more(and depending on their classification have been molded even more).
