2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

- Edit: As I posted that, I see that SDSU transfer portal OT Josh Simmons is visiting on Friday. He started every game for them last year, but his PFF grades aren't stellar (better in pass pro though, which we need). Probably would be an improvement though at one of the tackle spots with his experience.

Thanks for the update LJB, that is encouraging. Him or the portal kid from Purdue were the two that looked like they could contribute and improve the OL right away. Cutler can maybe provide depth but he is an IOL and not the solution we need at tackle by any account.

So Simmons would be a great pickup...he's not going to be Dawand or PJ, but I've already said it that is not a realistic expectation. I think Fryar can be a stud OT, but the rest are giant question marks. We need someone with experience that is reliable in pass pro, and Simmons checks that box. Lets get him to Columbus.

Agreed. We're more than likely not going to have top end talent at the OT spots this year. But, we might be able to squeeze out the potential of the current players by improving the competition with the addition of some seasoned transfer OL

Bingo. PJ and Dawand were maybe the best OT tandems I have watched in my Buckeye fandom, or darn near it. And that fleshed out in the draft. There is going to be a downgrade there, though it might not be as bad as we think. IOL I honestly think will be great with D Jackson (could play RT honestly if it puts the best on the field), Hinzman/Cutler/James/Vimahi, and M Jones...some combo of that will work. Tshabola/Fitzpatrick/etc. are guys that could come through with a good summer camp even if we are not in an ideal situation.

But your point is dead on, even if Cutler and say Simmons do not start, the competition is pure upside. It will drive the guys on our roster to improve, or in theory it should. And the portal can be used for depth too, ideally Simmons would be a starter but if not, the OL is notorious for injuries and we need guys there.

This guy as a true Frosh had great numbers, especially on pass protection. I feel like he will be a great upgrade to what we have right now.

Glad he's a Buckeye, but wouldn't be handing him a starting job just yet. Same scenario with Cutler. Different level of competition in the Big Ten. Hopefully this lights a fire under Zen and Tegra.

Agreed, and it seems he understands that with some of his remarks. Specially he noted that Coach Frye told him nothing is guaranteed but that they think he can play for them in either table position. Seems like the dude just wants championships - and I’m here for it!

Really impressed with his big offers out of high school: Georgia, OU, USC, Utah, ttun, etc. Perplexed as to why he opted to go to the Mountain West.
