2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I’ll respond to @cdiddy70 ’s post from Matthews’ thread here.
OSU missed on the Big 3 DEs- that can be rectified in the Portal
No RB- Not a need if 4 RBs are healthy, and there’s still Chip as an option
No QB- that’s an issue, but Kienholz is still deciding. And then there’s the Portal
LBs- playing primarily 2 means that OSU is stocked and in no need for anymore in this class

This class is really good, and I’d even say great when you look at the WRs, DBs, and OL. And the only recruits that were obtained at TE and LB are GREAT gets in the class

True... I think Gene Smith begging for more money is a reckoning that something needs to change. They probably need a consultant on how they can maximize their NIL game, however, for at least the next couple years OSU should be ok. Not monumentally better, but good. This recruiting class is actually pretty good, which in retrospect is impressive with the new knowledge that their NIL game is so weak.

I've been talking to my Miami fan buddy today, and he's nothing but elated at the current state of Miami. He's sending me tweets from other fans, and from John Ruiz. Think about that when someone is complaining about the state of OSU as a program. That a team who couldn't even win 5 games this year with their savior HC, feels positive about their status based on their recruiting and hitting the Portal. And let me be clear: That is not sustainable! Like at all! He's happy that his team is going to be filled with highly ranked teenagers, who's stars disappear the minute they hit campus. And getting guys who had high star rankings a year or more ago. And IMO, a number of those guys will leave if they don't see immediate success, and tbh they won't! How many true frosh starters have excelled in CFB history? Idk the exact number, but I can bet it's a small one. And if you mess up a kid's psyche in year 1, what do you expect from him in year 2? And what happens when the next 5star in '24 gets a bigger bag than his predecessor?
Listening to him made me just laugh and say I'd much rather have a shot in the CFP, and have a coach who has recruited guys who are willing to earn their bag in the program. Do I want OSU to start offering some up front money to keep up with other programs? At times, yes. But the guys chasing money, will they stay at mid tier programs like Miami once they get checks? Will they play their hearts out once they earned their check, even if they incentives to earn more? Time will tell. But I like the position OSU is at more and more. Use the Portal wisely, and fill holes here and there, but not sure how a team sustains getting 8, 10+ tranfers, and expects them to bond and buy in to the programs culture.

Per Birm:
There's been a push from some inside the program in Columbus to take a more comprehensive look at the 2023 Mr. Football and that's started to gain some traction over the last few days. Ohio State coaches stopped by Archbishop Hoban (Akron) last week and again on Monday of this week, and there's a developing chance that Sperling visits the Buckeyes campus at some point this week.

And, here is the 21st century way of equalizing the college football teams. The upper tier teams don't seem to rely on the portal, except for key positions of need. Teams that are floundering (eg. Colorado, Michigan St) can play 'build a team' pretty easily, as they have a larger need. Ergo, let's see if Colorado becomes a force in the Pac 12 next year. MSU had it's fling last year, but when the mercenaries moved on, were left with holes in their recruiting classes. Just my opinion.

I'm wondering what poster here asked before why OSU wasn't looking at Sperling? Man, I cannot recall. Maybe looking in this mirror will remind me :smug:

Damn. I just hurt my arm patting myself on the back.

Wonder who they are having to push against?

Good call. I figured that they thought he was too small and they had enough RBs on scholarship. But trust the coaches that they see something more in him than they did with Cornist or Keyes in OH, and also Wilcox.
The stats of his are out of a video game!

His yearly stats if anyone is interested....

3,511 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns on 377 carries (over 9 yards per carry). He's 190 pounds but he'll grow to 200 at a minimum. IMO we should offer him.

Sure it'd be nice if he had breakaway speed but it's kids like (and Dallan) who have the vision and patience to be extremely productive. He's perfect for this offense. Keep us on schedule and allows our play action to set up.

I feel like it’s been misinterpreted. Seems like the staff is fighting with each other about if he’s worthy of a last minute offer. He is committed to Buffalo, but don’t think that’s what was meant by OP.
It seems like there's been much staff fighting over whether to offer him, Cornist or pursue a transfer, or stand pat.

Not the best comparison, because Dallan had/has breakaway speed. And if he didn't sign with OSU, he would've been at: Notre Dame, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee or Illinois; not Buffalo.
But Sperling reminds me a ton of kids around the country who put up insane stats in HS, but the worry always is how does that talent translate to the college level and their fit with the team. Because even with those insane stats, I'd still rather have Cornist or Wilcox, IMO. But the saying goes "trust the coaches"

Then I remember Ryan Brewer and want to go throw up
