2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

If Brown wins the competition, I see it as a departure in Day's historic QB priorities.
To date, I see him prioritizing arm-talent (ability to make all throws) over athletic/running ability.
I doubt Brown will surpass McCord in arm-talent but will surpass him in running and could surpass him in other intangibles.
OSU's offense seems to click better when the constant threat of the run is present.

Brown does seem to give OSU the dual threat scenario that they have succeeded with in the past.

I think at those positions (offensive line especially) they value the maturity and age above skill and talent. I think it just says they'd like to keep developing the guys behind, and likely keep red-shirts on the table for incoming freshman as well. Worst case scenario, the Stanford transfers provide depth which means incoming guys maintain redshirts which allows them an extra year of eligibility. It's just their formula at the moment....will be interesting to see how it plays out in the future.
Let's regroup on this evaluation in 2024, when most of the covid team is done and gone. We shall see if this is truly a sustainable formula.

Back on topic of recruits for this season, I read quite a few players in the greater Akron area are not signing letters until February 1st. The only one that caught my eye is Sperling.

Can someone who is more knowledgeable about recruiting shed some light on this? I'm assuming they are giving it another month in case a better opportunity comes along.

at the rate of recruiting and portal misses Ohio State will be fighting mid major Big 12 teams and MAC schools for players. A little unsettling at this point.
Dude we have the #5 recruiting class. Hardly bleak.

We need to tweak the NIL for next year, because things definitely can be problematic if they don't.

Stop the doom and gloom.

3rd best class when it comes to average player ranking. We are sinking into the depths of the Big 12 or the MAC though :lol::lol:

7th actually, if it holds together. It's widely reported that Lee is up in the air.
Well let's hope we can pull it together. OSU failed to anticipate and read the tea leaves this year, but they can turn it around next year.

Following the CFP, Day and Smith have to refocus the deficits with this team moving forward for sure, before it really does spiral out of control.

They really read the whole NIL thing wrong, and it bit them in the butt big time.

Yeah, there are some pretty obvious holes in the roster already and a few more that you can see will probably be opened up on purpose once the CFP is over for us. That '20 class, in general, really didn't turn out well especially in the secondary and OL. The '21 safety class is already gone. I think there will be something like 8 live bodies in the CB room IF all three '23 recruits sign on.

Some serious transfer portal work to be done I think.

I don’t understand how so many are incapable of seeing the writing in neon lights on the wall. OSU’s refusal to dive in to the NIL depths (or the inability of the collectives to raise money) killed this classes ending, shutting them out of all targets they offered in the portal save for a long snapper and had already, allegedly, lost them the top recruit of 2024. Folks better pay attention. Shit is getting real. After the playoffs I think people hiding their heads in the sand will be blindsided by who and how many hit the portal. Maybe that’s the wake up call? Who knows?

Where does all this talk about MASS EXODOUS IN THE PORTAL! after the playoff come from? Seems 100% irrational sky is falling fan speak with no actual basis to it.

I bet nobody of significance transfers. But these same people will still be in a tailspin over guys who were down the depth chart transferring, like this hasn't happened at places like Bama as well.

Do you have any source for this negative notion that people are leaving the program in mass exodus? Or is it just a gut feeling that the sky is falling?

There are players who are going to declare certainly. The transfer portal is so flush with players right now. I think the players who are going to transfer already did.

Yes, yes, yes, until you talk about a mass exodus of players. Day and gene grossly fucked up this NIL mess, so we are in for a rough 2025 season at the least. This is beyond 2020 big ten covid cancel the season stupidity. It will take a massive 2024 recruiting haul and some key transfers to dampen the losses.

But where we aren’t screwed is current players are getting deals, it’s the up front NIL where they fucked up. So the only exodus I see is from players that don’t see a path to starting next year.

By rough do you mean still in contention for the B1G title/Playoff? So rough. I guess this how spoiled we have became though. If it's not constant domination of everything in the B1G it's not good enough. Even with a "down" (lol) year in recruiting like this year, the rest of the B1G is still a good bit behind us. Michigan will remain a thorn in our rears in the near future, but anyone else? meh.

The way some people talk you'd think we were falling behind the Indiana & Maryland's of the world though.
