2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Got off to a good start on '23 locking down some Ohio talent. Should make it easier to start honing in more on the big national targets.

Got a chance to watch Padilla and Montgomery more...with the need at OL, boy are we lucky to have them in Ohio and commit early. Both are absolute beasts and nasty as can be. Would be shocked if they aren't both 3 year starters here. Great building blocks to hopefully a stellar OL class. Special powers run in those two.

Keep an eye on Mark Fletcher, a RB from American Heritage in Florida. Big 6'2,215 # workhorse that has a punishing running style that reminds some of Derek Henry. He's received 3 CBs to Ohio St. this week from Ivins,Kurelic, and Wiltfong. Some talk that it may be one of Young and Baxter paired with Fletcher.

I see nothing at all in Fletcher that compares him to Henry. He’s a big RB that can move piles, and get tough yards, but he doesn’t have any breakaway spewed like Henry or run as violent. I’ve also heard a comparison to Najee Harris(I’m guessing because of his size as well), I also don’t really see that.
I know many will hate this comparison, but he reminds of Hassan Haskins. Or even one of the bruisers from Wisky like PJ Hill. But he’s going to need to be added with with another player. Looks like Young and Baxter are the most likely combo

Haskins is a good comp. Carlos Hyde was my first thought when I watched his film. Either way, he’d be a great addition to Day’s offense with all of that talent out wide.

Wait….6’2 225 lb Fletcher reminds you of a 5’9 Walker? In what way?

Running style. I’m not so lazy where I just pick a RB that’s only similar in size. Play style matters.

Fletcher has better speed and quickness than some are giving him credit for. Decent receiver out of the backfield. Keeps feet moving at all times. Strong. Better than average agility.

Since we’re doing comparisons, he kind of reminds me of Kenneth Walker.

PJ Hill is a stretch.
Don't see Kenneth Walker at all! A 5'9 210lbs Walker, who was known for breaking big plays and has an NFL comparison to Willie Parker is what you see? :roll1:
Hill was 5'11 235lbs, much closer to a Fletcher in college, and was a bruiser who didn't pull away from defenses. Much like Fletcher. If anything, Walker isn't even a stretch, they're 2 different RBs

So Carlos Hyde? Or Antonio Gibson? But I am just not seeing Walker at all. And it’s not just about size. But it definitely plays a part in how players play. You don’t see Walker moving piles really.

You mean the Willie Parker who was only known for speed and bad vision? I don’t see that at all. Whomever made that comparison must not be that high on Walker or they just made the comparison because they’re the same size.

Also, I think we’re overstating the “big plays” from Kenneth Walker. He had 4 long runs. Two against Northwestern, one against Rutgers, and one against Mich.

And Fletcher had no big runs against HS competition!

His sophomore highlights are full of them. But if he played the competition that somebody like Derrick Henry played, he’d look like a monster.

Now, I’m not one that agrees that he’s comparable to Henry. But I do think he’s better than some are giving him credit for. I’ve seen actual disappointment from some OSU fans.

Yeah, his competition is top notch, which also factors into his stats. And I agree, that if he were to drop down to division 2 which was Henry’s school,he would be a beast. And it is sad that fans expect a JK Dobbins or Treveyon Henderson in every class. Fletcher, imo, is being focused on after Day seeing so many issues moving the chains on short downs. Teague couldn’t stay healthy to be the bettering ram(yes, the OL didn’t help either), and Williams wasn’t big enough to break the multitude of DL tackles. And we also didn’t have the RB to wear teams down late in games. That’s where Fletcher would come in, in both instances. But he’s a rotational RB at OSU, and I’m curious to see who they sign with him in this class.

Btw, I believe who they sign in this class will have a heck of a fight with ‘22signee, Hayden. He’s being forgotten about as he’s only a frosh and may not see the field this season. But he’s every bit as talented as some of the best backs in ‘23.
