2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

247 5-star safety, #26 overall, LSU decommit Jacoby Matthews wants an Ohio State offer. Says current 2022 commit Jyaire Brown is one of his best friends and wants to play together.

Some highlights....

1) Hero Kanu is a borderline 5-star guy, more on potential in college than how he has/will perform in high school. He is a great fit for Ohio State both in terms of football and culture. They have him "in" this class.

2) Chris McClellan is still an Ohio State lean, but Oklahoma and maybe Alabama are still players.

3) Caden Curry is the #1 DL on Ohio State's board and would be a 5-star guy if he played in Florida or Texas instead of Indiana. They compare him to Nick Bosa. They have him "in" this class.

4) Kenneth Grant came out of nowhere and really surprised people at Ohio State's camp in early June. He is super-athletic for someone his size (6-foot-5, 350 pounds). They think he is "in" this class if Larry Johnson wants him. At least one of the panelists thinks that Larry Johnson definitely wants him.

5) Khurtiss Perry visited Ohio State on his own dime for the huge recruiting weekend in early June. They think that Alabama doesn't want him for some reason, and that Auburn currently leads. They also think that Ohio State can get him if they want him.

6) The longer that Omari Abor waits, the less likely he will go to Ohio State; they have him "out" of this class. Seems like an Alabama lean.

7) SEC schools are selling Enai White on being a stand-up OLB/EDGE in college, whereas Ohio State sees him as a traditional hand-in-the-dirt DE. They feel that the kid will fall for the SEC line, outgrow OLB, and end up as a DE anyway (made a comparison to Brenton Cox, class of 2018, who committed to Ohio State as a DE, flipped to Georgia who promised to make him an OLB, failed at OLB at Georgia, transferred to Florida where he is now potentially the best DE in the SEC. Lesson: Larry Johnson doesn't get paid to blow sunshine. If Larry Johnson says you're a DE not an OLB, you're a DE not an OLB.). In sum, they have him "out" of this class.

8) Kenyatta Jackson keeps wavering between Ohio State and Oklahoma. Jackson is scheduled to make an official visit to Oklahoma on September 11th. If he makes that visit, then he's probably going to sign with Oklahoma. They have him "out" of this class.

9) Dominick "Nick" James made an official visit to Ohio State for the huge recruiting weekend in early June. They feel that Nick would commit to Ohio State if he could. They feel that Nick is a Plan B guy for Ohio State and probably most of the other top schools. South Carolina leads because they would accept his commitment today. Ohio State might become more interested as time goes on, but he's definitely not a priority recruit right now.

10) No mention of Walter Nolen, Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, or Shemar Stewart, which isn't surprising because they were never legitimate candidates. However, I'm surprised that they did not discuss Marvin Jones, Jr., who is scheduled to make an official visit to Ohio State for the Oregon game.

RECAP:

Kanu and Curry are "in" this class; McClellan is probably "in" this class; Grant and Perry are "in" this class if Ohio State pushes for them.

Abor and White are "out" of this class; Jackson is probably "out" of this class; James is a Plan B guy.

Is this the kid Michigan will go after instead of Nolan? Maybe if they weren't spending time and effort on a pipe dream, they could have built this relationship a bit better.

Drew Allar threw for over 500 yards tonight in a matchup of two highly ranked NE OH teams.

Not sure how interested OSU is, but one of the coaches made his game last week.
I’d ASSUME they’d be pretty interested. I can’t see 2 of the current scholarship QBs on the team next year (hope I’m wrong), so I’d think they’d want to get 1 in ‘22 to back fill Ewers early enrollment…though there’s always the portal I guess.

I'm thinking the portal is going to be more realistic than getting a '22 QB this late in the process

While I'm not very concerned about getting a QB for this class with the current QB room and Davis looking good for '24, I really like Allar and would not be upset at all if the staff takes a flyer on him.
