2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Derrick LeBlanc talks Ohio State offer

One young player the Buckeyes have seen enough of to know an offer was warranted is Derrick LeBlanc, a likely 5-star prospect in the Class of 2023 from Osceola (Kissimmee, Fla.) High School. Ohio State offered him on Wednesday night.

The offer, which is No. 38 for LeBlanc, came after a conversation with a handful of Buckeyes coaches.

“I was talking to Ryan Day,” LeBlanc told Lettermen Row. “He sent me over to Tony Alford, who recruits my area, and they told me they were talking about me with Coach [Larry] Johnson — me and my defensive tackle John Walker — and then they said they wanted to let me know I got offer there.

“It’s a big one to get, especially at my position. They produce some of the best defensive linemen in the country and have one of the country’s best coaches.”

Johnson has been in contact with the 6-foot-6, 255-pound 15-year-old since the end of his freshman season. Right now, he’s capable of playing with his hand in the dirt or lining up as an outside linebacker. There’s years of football ahead of him, but Leblanc is trying to piece things together as he looks at the future. There’s a desire to leave the state of Florida — if the opportunity is right.

“I like Florida and stuff,” he said. “But I want to see new places, so it doesn’t matter to me if I stay close to home. I want my parents to come to my games, but my parents will be happy if I’m succeeding and getting a good education. I’m taking classes so I can enroll early into whatever school I choose. Whenever I’m ready to make a decision, I’ll make the decision.”

It’s early, but Derrick LeBlanc — and likely his teammate John Walker — will be worth watching for Ohio State.

“I’m from Steubenville,” Longmire said. “So Ohio State is a top school for me. I was young when we moved, third grade, but I still get up in the summer to see family.”

Longmire is currently the No. 4-ranked 2022 prospect in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Ohio State may not be playing football this fall, but that hasn’t stopped the coaching staff from continuing their efforts on the recruiting trail. Not only have the Buckeyes been trying to close out their 2021 class strong, but they’ve been active in getting a jump on the 2022 cycle as well, handing out a number of offers to rising juniors this week.

One player that received the good news about landing a scholarship from the Scarlet and Gray recently is Aliou “Big Lou” Bah, a 6-foot-6, 316-pounder out of Memphis (TN) Whitehaven. Bah now has around 25 offers and was excited about his latest one from Ohio State, which was a few months in the making.

“I’ve been in contact with Ohio State since April,” he told Buckeye Scoop. “Coach Tim Hinton there recruited Cormontae Hamilton from my high school a couple years ago, so he’s very familiar with Whitehaven and my head coach. I’ve been talking with Coach Hinton since April and I’ve been building a good relationship with him. He got me in touch with Coach (Kennedy) Cook, the graduate assistant O-line coach, around that time as well. Just a few days ago I started speaking with Coach Stud and we’ve been talking and building a great relationship. They love my film and they love my character as a person off the field. Cormontae and my head coach told them a lot about me and so they ended up offering me a full scholarship.”

Alex Gleitman believes QB prospect Jacurri Brown is the next man up since Quinn Ewers has committed to Texas. Brown is currently rated the #4 dual threat in the 2022 class, but AG thinks he's about to blow up. His main offers are Ohio St., Florida, Clemson, and Auburn. Asked about Ohio St. he says "You go up north, that's who you want to play for. Nobody else up there is touching them. Just like Alabama, just a dynasty school you want to go to."

edit...forgot his vitals... 6'4, 205, and Ga.insider compares him to Cam Newton but he does say Clemson leads (no OSU offer yet).

WASHINGTON RANKED NO. 1
Al Washington is an Ohio State assistant who we have discussed ad nauseam in this space, and other spaces, in terms of his effectiveness as a recruiter, how he builds relationships and the resounding seal of approval from a multitude of Buckeye recruits – both committed and uncommitted ones.

In October, Reid Carrico and Jack Sawyer talked about some of their favorite moments being recruited by Washington.

“He’s got something that makes you wanna run through a brick wall,” Sawyer said. “He can just get stuff out of you that you never knew you had in you.”

In January, it was Cody Simon explaining how close he is with Washington.

“He’s just a really personable guy. It’s so easy to talk to him," Simon said. “I talk to him every day, pretty much. He’s helped me so much and taught me some stuff already. Just little techniques and stuff like that.”

In May, Washington said he thought he was hitting his stride in year two at Ohio State, and we later detailed how Washington cut his recruiting teeth early in his career and learned how to develop relationships.

On Tuesday, Washington saw all of those efforts pay off, not only by securing his third linebacker commitment of the 2022 class in Dasan McCullough – during a cycle in which linebackers are one of the program's biggest positional needs – but also by being tabbed as the No. 1 recruiter in the 2022 class by 247Sports. (He was actually already No. 1 prior to Tuesday, but he padded his stats with McCullough's commitment.)

Washington is credited with being a large helping hand in the commitments of outside linebackers McCullough, C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers, in addition to offensive tackle Tegra Tshabola, whom Washington was the one to actually offer back in November.

“I’m closer with Coach Al than I am with any other coach,” McCullough told Eleven Warriors earlier this summer. “He’s really a technician coach. He tells me that he can just look at my body and tell that with the techniques he’s gonna be adding to it that it’s gonna be dangerous. And, really, him as a person is definitely a coach I wanna work hard for. He’s definitely a player’s coach. Obviously, I’m not in the locker room or anything, but I can see videos of him hyping the team up.

“All those little things makes me feel stronger and stronger about him because that’s the kind of coach I wanna be around – someone who pushes me and someone who wants me to be my very best efficiently and knows what they’re doing, obviously. You see the type of linebackers he’s gotten in the league, like Malik Harrison and there’s gonna be a couple more. Plus, you see what he did at Michigan, and it’s just real special.”

Just sayin': As a recruiter Al Washington may not considered to be in the same elite group as Kerry Coombs, Brian Hartline, and/or Larry Johnson; but he is definitely "holding his own" in the 2022 recruiting class.

In addition to DBU, WRU, and DLU, if Al Washington can keep this up we'll be LBU too.

After the run on LBs he made in 2022, he better be #1. Could be one of the best LB recruiting classes we've ever had on paper.

Rivals did a Fact or Fiction with two of their insiders today (Farrell and Gorney). The question was does Ohio State have a chance to have the greatest LB haul in history in '22 class?
Both gurus answered Fact and of course Shawn Murphy committing was the caveat. Both think the Buckeyes have the momentum to bring him into the class as well. They also anticipate all 4 will be 5*.

That lines up and would have to be the best LB haul in recruiting history since it's been tracked. Closest off the top of my head would be the USC class that had Mauluga, Cushing, etc. And you know probably 1 of the 3 on board right now end up at DE, so the numbers work.

That 2005 class has Maualuga at 10, Luther Brown at 28, Cushing at 31, and Kaluka Maiava at 99 as LB’s. Ridiculous class but if rankings hold true and get Murphy as well (I’m skeptical but just me) that would be 4 of the top 100 as well regardless of position. I have no idea what other class would even come close so nice work RB on the comparison

NEW OFFER

Despite the reported pause Ohio State has put on recruiting, the Buckeyes moved forward on Monday by extending a new offer out to 2022 Shelby (N.C.) High School four-star prospect Malaki Hamrick.

Hamrick is a 6-foot-4, 200-pounder ranked No. 142 overall, No. 12 at outside linebacker and No. 6 in the state of North Carolina’s 2022 class.

He has 15 offers thus far, highlighted by Arizona State, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and North Carolina, which is where he is Crystal Ball’d to right now with a 10 on the confidence meter of 247Sports NC State Insider Michael Clark.

Al Washington and Co. are looking to land at least four linebackers in the class, so the Buckeyes have now made it clear that they have interest in Hamrick as a potential candidate to join Gabe Powers, Dasan McCullough and C.J. Hicks.

And they may have their next round of super talented players in the 2022 class with three-star tight end Elijah Brown and four-star offensive tackle Aamil Wagner. Brown specifically has seen his recruitment soar to new heights this offseason with his offers from the likes of Alabama, Penn State, and USC all coming.
