2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

OHIO STATE'S RECRUITING EFFORTS OVER NEXT TWO YEARS KEY TO REBUILDING OFFENSIVE LINE DEPTH

102489_h.jpg

In each of the last three recruiting classes, Ohio State has landed a five-star offensive lineman — Wyatt Davis in 2017, Nicholas Petit-Frere in 2018 and Harry Miller in 2019. The Buckeyes didn’t waste any time in the Class of 2020 either, as five-star Cincinnati tackle Paris Johnson Jr. became the first of his class to pledge allegiance to Ohio State.

For the Buckeyes, Johnson’s commitment was more than just a verbal commitment from a five-star, in-state prospect. It was a message for what first-year head coach Ryan Day and new offensive line coach Greg Studrawa plan to do in fixing what is a major depth issue moving forward at the position — offer the best recruits in the nation and earn those commitments.

It’s not a crisis for the offensive line corps, but losing four of five starters in one offseason isn’t ideal. In addition to the seven graduated offensive linemen, offensive guard Michael Jordan also chose to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft in April.

Suddenly, junior tackle Thayer Munford is the most experienced offensive lineman of the group with just one year of experience under his belt.

Even though the Buckeyes signed on four offensive linemen from the 2019 class, it’s still not enough. Three redshirt seniors will be competing for spots on the line in 2019, as Branden Bowen brings the most experience with six games started in 2017, but for the Buckeye offensive line to be as effective as it has been in recent seasons, it will need breakout seasons from Davis and fellow redshirt sophomore Josh Myers.

Regardless of whether those breakout seasons occur or not, the Buckeyes aren’t doomed for the future. They’ve extended offers to nine of the top 15 tackles in the Class of 2020, three top-10 guards and three top-five centers. In total, they’ve offered 32 offensive linemen, by far the most of any position.

Three of those have already committed, in No. 1 center Luke Wypler out of New Jersey, No. 90 tackle Jakob James out of Cincinnati and Johnson — the No. 1 tackle.

Alright, since you all asked me (welcome to RB07OSU's offseason), here is my still way too early guestimate of this class:

QB: Jack Miller (he is solid and hopefully he brings in some more AZ recruits in this class)
RB: Darvon Hubbard (great player and he seems solid, but let's see what happens after we bring another RB in the class)

RB/Pivot: Michael Drennen II (I see a ton of similarities to Curtis Samuel here, I think Drennen fits perfectly in the pivot spot...with Snead exiting, I suspect we take on more pure RB in addition to Hubbard and Drennen, just don't know who yet...we'll go all out on Milton and EJ Smith, but they are long shots right now)
WR: Gee Scoot Jr. (appears solid and great player to start off with at WR)
WR: Jaxon Smith-Njigba (very underrated WR and should stick, but let's see after we nail down some other targets)
WR: Rakim Jarrett (just a matter of time imo but hopefully he joins sooner rather than later to help with recruiting)

WR: Julian Fleming (going on a big limb here but I like our odds with Day at the helm, our pass-friendly offense, and the relationship with Fields...I think we win out here...Fleming, Jarrett, Smith-Njigba and Scott would be a mind-boggling WR class)
TE: Mark Redman (no idea where we stand with him but we'll likely be taking a TE in this class and there are very few offers out there...really want Darnell Washington from NV, but that is not likely happening)
OL: Paris Johnson (he's solid, visits don't concern me at all)
OL: Luke Wypler (also believe he is solid but we'll keep recruiting him hard to make sure he is solid)
OL Jakob James (solid, end of story)

OL: Turner Corcoran (if he decided today, it would be OSU...but need to keep pursuing hard to fight off the locals)
OL: Jake Wray (I think Jake comes back into the fold and joins his big bro, but it is far from a sure thing...we'll take at least 5 OL, probably 6 in this class)
OL: Justin Rodgers (another bold prediction, as he appears to be a UGA lean right now...but we had a huge lead and I think we can get it back with some hard work and the development of relationships with the new staff...getting Rodgers on top of what we already have would make this an OL class for the books...also keep a close eye on Reece Attebery and Geirean Hatchett)
DE: Darrion Henry (matter of when, not if...major talent)
DE: Bryan Bresee (I hesitated adding him, as I think we are slightly trailing right now...but I think the long-term relationship with LJ Sr. and our need for DE's might push us to the finish line...would love Sav'ell Smalls as well and think that might be a realistic chance if we pursue hard...highly unlikely to get both but either one would be enormous)
DE/LB: Jaheim Thomas (think he gets offered soon and joins Henry..I think Thomas lands at DE)
DE/LB Mekhail Sherman (still sitting pretty but Tre Williams to Clemson doesn't help...need to lock down Jarrett asap and go all out on Sherman, he's a high priority in this class...I like Sherman at LB and we can put him on the end in rush situations)
DT: Cole Brevard (no idea here after Tre Williams pulled the trigger for Clemson...I would think we would want two DT's in this class, but offers have been sparse)
LB: DeaMonte Trayanum (could be RB or Safety, but I think he fits in as a LB by nature and by need)
LB: No clue (seriously no clue...we need at least 2 and likely 3 LB's...Sherman and Trenayum make 2 but we need another pure LB...I would imagine that becomes clearer as Washington settles in and starts recruiting
DB: Henry Gray (I've got a good feeling on flipping him for some reason)
DB: Lejond Cavazos (he will come back to the good guys eventually, just needs to feel out the new staff first)
DB: Kelee Ringo (another bold prediction but Ringo is a priority for the staff and Miller and Hubbard will help...we push hard and make Ringo the centerpiece of this DB class)
DB: RJ Mickens (like where we sit and one of the best safeties in the nation)
DB: Dwight McGlothern (with the staff pursuing, I think we have a great shot here)
DB: Miles Brooks (long way to go here but I like where we are at...not sure we take 6 DB's, but I think we take at least 5)
ATH: Jutahn McClain (will be a Buckeye and I see him on the offensive side of the ball)

- Does that potential class make you grin from ear to ear? Me too. Some of it may not come to fruition, but the 2020 class is going to be LOADED.

Thanks for the write-up, RB07OSU.

Yeah, the class always looks spectacular a year in advance when u project out what it may look like this early, but the possibility of a final class that resembles anything close to that on paper would be amazing.

But, even if they only land 60-70% of the names on that list, and fill in the blanks with other TBD 4* and 3* names, it's still going to be a special '20 class regardless.

With the number of highly rated kids OSU is in on and in good position with, #5 is my low mark and finishing #1- #3 in the recruiting rankings, depending on the 2019 on-"field" product (no pun intended) looks, is not out of the question either.

Thanks for the EARLY early prediction @RB07OSU , it's funny how the list will probably change by next month
I agree with most of your list, but see us missing on Wray and Rodgers on the OL, but it's alright because OH has some OL talent in-state, with some serious size(Rengert and Leroux). Guys like that would be previously slow played, so it may be interesting to see how the new staff deals with them.
I also see us going after a 2nd QB instead of having to rely on a transfer for a 4th QB(and in the case that Baldwin looks to transfer). Crenshaw and Prater could be interesting names.
Idk if Hubbard remains in the class, but I trust Alford/Day to bring in talent at that position annually.
IMO, Rosemy or Henning are more realistic at WR than Fleming, but I think we'd be all ecstatic to get Fleming from PA.
I think TE we could recruit locally and be fine, since its still under utilized.
Another LB may have to be a camp special, a guy that the coaches see something in that is under the radar.

That's just my opinion, just throwing stuff at the wall as well. Always appreciate your lists and insight RB.

It’s early. Let go a little projecting and a little bit following the bread crumbs from various insiders:

QB: Jack Miller

RB: Bijan Robinson

RB: Deamonte Trayanum

WR: Jaxon Smith-Njigba

WR: Gee Scott Jr.

WR: Rakim Jarrett

WR: Marcus Rosemy

H-Back: Michael Drennen II

TE: Mark Redman

OT: John Young

OT: Paris Johnson

OL: Reece Atteberry

OL: Jakob James

OL: Roger Rosengarten

C: Luke Wypler

DE: Amin Vanover

DE: Jaheim Thomas

DL: Darrion Henry

LB: Mekhail Sherman

LB: Cullen Coleman

DB: Miles Brooks

DB: Fred Davis Jr.

DB: RJ Mickens

DB: Henry Gray

DB: Makari Paige

ATH: Jalen Berger

ATH: Cameron Martinez

We need another true DT this class, but there just aren’t many names out there right now. Numbers are high at DB, so once some names emerge I’d probably swap one of them out.

Oh it most definitely will change in a month haha. My projection probably comes from a very scarlet and gray tinted lens. But that is what February is for I suppose. Wray might be a little bit of a stretch right now and you might pencil Attebery in there instead...frankly I would see that as an even swap if it happens. There are a lot of targets at OL right now that I would be more than content to end up with, but I put in Wray and Rodgers mostly on familiarity...might be a wish list but of the two, Rodgers is the one I want the absolute most. He could be an instant contributor and I see him as one of the top OL in the country regardless of whether he ends up on the interior or at tackle.

My opinion on Fleming changed after the Fields transfer...there is a real relationship there and Fleming would have the opportunity to have Justin throwing him the ball for at least 1 year. Then Jack Miller in the 2020 class, who is out to get the best receivers he can. Don't get me wrong, it is going to take more than Justin Fields to get Fleming here, but it is a big plus...then you also have Hartline building a great relationship and a new offense that WR's are flocking to.

And @HotMic pointed out Fred Davis Jr. at CB, I would put him on my projection as well and maybe sub out McGlothern or Brooks. I would actually put a bit of confidence in Davis picking OSU right now...I think Halfley will close that one.

Shouldn't Jakob James be bolded?

Rivals just rolled out their top 10, notable targets below:

2. RB Zack Evans (also a longshot, but has an offer)
3. LB Justin Flowe (longshot, but has an OSU offer)
4. DB Elias Ricks (doubt he sticks with LSU, but also doubt we get back into serious contention)
5. OL Paris Johnson (nice bump up, mentioned he could be in contention for #1 overall with how much he has improved)
6. DE Bryan Bresee (still firmly in the mix, need an LJ Sr special here though)
8. DE/LB Sav'ell Smalls (think we are in better shape than most think)
9. DB Kelee Ringo (we are in the heat of things and Ringo is #1 on my wishlist with his talent and our need at DB)
10. OL Justin Rodgers (we are still in it but need to make up some ground...#2 on my wish list with the need at OL)
