tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Like a super-sized version of playing in the Shoe i September for a million bucks? Interesting thought

Or, considered from 180-degrees… “Want to be compensated for coming to play in the Shoe every couple of years? Ok, then… we’re even.”

Sorry I didn't see these, yes. This is what I had in mind more than anything.

There are no rules right now, they who learn quickest will win. Get out in front of building an affiliate network with the teams/schools that will have the occasional 3 star turned OSU caliber monster.

All in all, as a matter of general principle, someone at OSU (or any school looking to navigate these waters) should educate themselves on early major league baseball and specifically a guy named Branch Ricky. History doesn't repeat but it does echo. This wild west of talent acquisition is exactly what what those early baseball guys were dealing with. A playbook, or draft of a playbook, exists. People who do this for a living would be foolish to ignore it.

If you want one book on it, go read Dollar Sign on the Muscle by Kevin Kerrane. Well worth the time and money.

So the recruiting strategy on offense will be quite interesting going forward. Because it seems like the gameplan isn't consistent. Chip Kelly was brought in to be the play caller and OC, so I won't bring up Ryan Day if in fact Kelly is the one doing the offensive schemes. OSU hired an OC to be innovative and creative, and on Saturday it looked worse than the play calling against MSU in 2015. You don't recruit talents like Egbuka, Inniss, JJ Smith, Tate, etc, and then don't use them. And those type of talents will stop wanting to come to OS regardless if Hartline is here or not. You don't recruit top WRs and QBs only to run your RB into the line repeatedly in their biggest rivalry game.

Not sure why you’re worried about recruiting we can fix all our misses on top projected talent with the backups, 3rd stringers and grad transfers from the portal [/s]

You mean guys like Josh Simmons, Set McLaughlin, Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, Caleb Downs, Davison Igbinosun, Julian Sayin, and Will Kacmarek? I see the sarcasm, but Ohio State has been killing it in the portal.

Just like the NFL, college football teams now have two legit ways to obtain talent – Signing Day (draft) and transfer portal (free agency).

Class of 2026: Three-star quarterback Matt Ponatoski

Two of Ohio State’s 2025 signees finished in the top three in voting for Ohio’s Mr. Football award. Five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair was the runner-up, while four-star wide receiver Bodpegn Miller – who played quarterback for Ontario – came in third place.

Moeller quarterback Matt Ponatoski, a junior, came in first place following a season where he threw for 4,107 yards and 56 touchdown passes. Ponatoski visited Ohio State for the Michigan game last week and has received plenty of interest from the Buckeyes within the last few months, though he hasn’t yet received an offer from OSU.

Just sayin': WTF, 5-Star Sr QB finishes 2nd in Ohio's Mr. Football award to 3-Star Jr QB. OK, why is Matt Ponatoski only rated a 3-Star?

He just got hot this season, after an average Sophomore year. He will get a massive bump by summer and could make his collegiate plans interesting. Deciding between Baseball and Football

I was listening to the most recent Talking Stuff with Birm and AE, and they brought up an amazing point for OSU’s strategy with NIL in recruiting. OSU will not advise their collectives to offer the insane high 7 and 8 figure amounts to HSers just because they have a 5star. Fans will have a bunch of frustration over the years watching 5star flee for Tennessee, UGa, Miami, Texas, etc, especially at OL and DL. This convo will be specifically towards the lines. The percentage is extremely high that it takes multiple years for these kids to contribute. Why pay for example a $5mil for 4yrs NIL to a 5star OL when he won’t see the field or even see the field with the type of dominance expected until his 3rd year? It will be interesting next year to see who has a better year next year: David Sanders or one of the OTs transferring up from the FCS. Oregon didn’t get Brandon Baker who went to Texas, but they got one of the top 3 OTs in the Portal who this year has paved the way for Gabriel. And Ajani Cornelius is 1st team All B1G this year too. Texas is rumored to be looking for another OT in the Portal because they don’t think Baker will be ready for FT starting next season:roll1:

It’s a market. Right now almost a completely free one.

If the buyers start chasing the portal OL then the price will go up/through the roof. Now you are back to the elite HS talent.

Ultimately it’s a buy/build decision. They should have the data and the ability to make the right choice/blend of approaches.

Agreed. The best teams will get a blend of talent from HS and the Portal. The teams that are fighting to stay relevant will swing big one way or the other. But a team like OSU should be able to still get top HS talent and get them to still develop while a Portal starts a head of them for a year or so. Im hoping for example that young OL who are now about to be juniors got better learning from McLaughin. Maybe Thurman has become a better blocker and more complete TE learning from Kacmarek, and hopefully Sayin was able to sit back and learn more of the offense and didn’t have to be forced into action by watching Howard. ScUM is going to have a lot of ebbs and flows next year because they went so hard after Underwood. He’s like a top 3 NFL draft pick to them, he has to play next year.
