tOSU Recruiting Discussion

David Baldwin, the QB from IMG is another name I would keep an eye on. Seemed to be favoring Indiana, Utah, Missouri and Washington State. Not sure if the late signing period means bigger programs come calling for the athletic lefty.

If you can get him, you take him. QBs like Fields don’t come around very often and very rarely fall in your lap. I know Day has a connection to one of Fields’ QB instructors or something like that. So the smoke is there. I say this knowing what it likely means for Martell which is a bummer because no one is higher on him than me. But you can’t pass on Fields. Fields is another guy Day could put in New York City like he did with Haskins. He’s that good.

I am of the mind that even if we get Fields, Martell isn't going anywhere unless by some miracle Fields gets clearance to play immediately. Haskins is 99% leaving and that leaves Tate as the guy even for next year even if Fields comes here. If that is the scenario, I think Tate has the confidence to start for a year and say bring on the competition in his junior year. Speculation of course, especially with the big "if" that is Fields even coming here in the first place. But I do agree that if you get Fields to come here, you deal with whatever fallout happens from that, he is that good.

Also, Nester is absolutely priority 1, 2, 3, etc...have to keep him in this class. Unfortunately, he will be many schools priority after the pickins became so slim.

As to the rest, see what we can scrounge up at CB and one more OL spot. If we can find a serviceable QB at this point, go for it...or maybe a grad transfer even if it isn't Fields...otherwise, sell Jack Miller on staying in the 2020 class as "the guy" from an early stage in his career.

Miracle? I view it as much more likely than not given 1) all the recent examples of granted waivers for seemingly spurious reasons and 2) Georgia opened up an investigation and dismissed a baseball player over hurling racial slurs (the n-bomb) at Fields during a football game.

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/g...-fields-petition-to-ncaa-to-play-immediately/

As others have pointed out, pushing back against an African American player who says they no longer feel safe at a school that has other student athletes openly hurling n-bombs around probably isn’t a PR battle the school or the NCAA want to have.

They’re going to go on record saying that that behavior is normal at their school and Fields has no legitimate reason to feel uncomfortable?

Additionally, Fields will likely show up at his school of choice quickly and in time to participate not only in spring practice, but winter conditioning as well.

And he should receive notice about his eligibility to play in April, just in time for or immediately after the spring game.

It seems to me, if Fields comes to Ohio State, that the process and timeline will be very similar to the Haskins/Burrow competition and transfer decision last year.

So I’ll have to root for wherever Tate transfers, plus LSU, in addition to Ohio State. This is getting tiring.
UCLA for Tate.

Edit: I should add, I base this on nothing other than it making a ton of sense for various reasons - mostly the Ryan Day - Chip Kelly connection and how well Martell would fit in that offense.

I was thinking WVU, becuase he LOVED Jake Spavital during the recruiting process and when Jake left TAMU, that set the wheels in motion for Tate to flip to OSU.

But Spav was recently hired as head coach at Texas State. Tate ain't goin' there.

This is just for fun, I do not want Tate to leave and I'm not suggesting that he is or should. Just hypothetical.

That makes perfect sense.
I don’t know, you think he can beat out Wilton Speight and the kid who didn’t win a single game last season?

https://www.denverpost.com/2018/09/23/ucla-football-quarterback-depth-issues/

Or this kid:

https://lastwordoncollegefootball.com/2018/12/19/ucla-signs-quarterback-chase-griffin/

As expected, UCLA has officially signed Chase Griffin, a 5-10, 186-pound quarterback out of Hutto Texas. Griffin is a three-star recruit, per the 247Sports composite.

He can also claim his goal is to be closer to home with the move.

[UGa and/or the NCAA is] going to go on record saying that that behavior is normal at their school and Fields has no legitimate reason to feel uncomfortable?

Obviously an argument against Fields's potential waiver request would look nothing like that; it would look more like the opposite. Something like, "That behavior is very uncommon at the school, and the school quickly dismissed the offending student. Therefore Fields has no urgent need to transfer out."

I'm not offering an opinion on whether Fields will or should get a waiver, but the argument you proposed certainly would not be the argument against a waiver.

edit: The UGa baseball player was dismissed from the baseball team, but I don't see any report indicating he was kicked out of school.

Well, yeah.

At the same time, it also feels like getting into a discussion about whether racism is a thing in the south might not be a topic they want to delve too deeply into.
