tOSU Recruiting Discussion

It’s not Feb

No, it ain't Feb..... but they aren't catching scUM's class this year. And frankly, I am elated that the staff was able to keep this thing together (other than the Mathis surprise) the way they did with going through a change at the helm just 3 weeks prior.

Day even interupted, and objected, in his presser when it was suggested that they could still bring in 6-7 more recruits during the late signing period and said he didn't anticipate it being that high.

Truly think they try to keep Nester, go after another OL, maybe we see another few names pop up in the back 7, but think this class gets inked in around 18 and they shoot for the stars for '20 after a successful RB and '19 season.

I think they’ll work on offensive line and cornerback recruiting from now to February but there aren’t a lot of uncommitted prospects out there.

Try to hold onto Nester. Kick the tires a little on Darnell Wright if he doesn’t sign with Tennessee before the end of the week. Try to get in the door with Devonshire if they feels he’s worthy of an offer.

There’s not much else out there.

Once the dust settles the obvious needs are OL, DB and QB. Here are some guys I would target:

OL - starts with Nester and that is regardless of position. Have to keep him in the fold. Absolutely paramount above all else. The Darnell Wright ship has unfortunately sailed. Bamidele Olaseni is an interesting project. He's at Garden City CC and originally from Longon, England. OSU offered back in September but this kid has been virtually silent on the recruiting trail. Was recently offered by Texas and I believe visited. Auburn has him as a priority as well. Utah also in the mix. He's listed at 6-8 330 but he looks slim...almost like NPF. I would crank it to 11 on this kid. Jonathan Allen from Dayton Dunbar is still available and at this point if his academics check out it would almost be like why not take him and see if he pans out. Kid starts on their basketball team at that size so the athleticism is there. The frame and size are obviously there. OSU seemed to pass before but can they afford to again? Danielson Ike is another tackle out of Kansas City that appears to still be available. Have only seen a little bit of film on him but I like what I see. Probably a right tackle at best or more likely an interior guy. But he is a stud. Michigan was high on him until they landed Trevor Keegan and then it appears they backed off with six OL committed. I would be in contact with him ASAP. Ira Henry from Saint Louis will probably be a heavily recruited kid in the late cycle. Thought to be a Missouri lean but now has some big boys chasing him like Florida and Oklahoma. Might be worth a phone call at least.

DB - I would put all my effort into Kaiir Elam. Has only taken one official visit, to Miami, and will definitely take officials to UF and UGA...but I would try to nail down one of those other visits. A longshot at best but definitely one of the best corners still on the market and worth the effort. MJ Devonshire is probably the top uncommitted DB in the region and definitely someone I would recruit hard from now until February. Marcus Banks is a kid out of Houston that OSU offered early and then never seemed to remain in contact with...and I bet they wish they had now. He didn't sign yesterday but all signs point to him ending up in College Station. EJ Jackson is a long corner out of Glades Central HS in Florida that I would try to get up here for a visit. Could snatch him away from USF potentially. He would be at the top of my list after Elam. Jamel Hamm flew under the radar at Cleveland Glenville so he went to Fork Union for a year and has added some impressive size and is fully qualified. Recently visited UVA but not sure if they offered or not. I would bring him in as a possible safety/OLB recruit. Bring him in for a visit and see where he might fit in. OSU was in contact with Isheem Young early and then decided to go another direction. He's a bit undersized but maybe it's time to circle back around and see if he'd still be interested. He was once committed to PSU but is a big WVU lean at the moment.

QB - One interesting name out there is Messiah deWeaver, who is back on the market after being at EMCC where he put up decent stats including a 68% completion percentage. Originally from Wayne HS in Dayton for those that don't remember. I don't see OSU chasing him but thought it was worth mentioning. An uncommitted guy I really like is Sam Saxton out of Austin, TX. Originally committed to Southern Miss but backed off that pledge in early December. Has offers from several Ivy League schools as well as some schools like New Mexico and Rutgers. Very accurate and athletic. I think he is very underrated. Another name I like is Knox Kadum from Rome, GA. He was waiting on LSU to offer and that never happened. Then he was in the discussion as the second possible QB for UGA this class but that never happened. Has offers from Rutgers, Akron, Charlotte, etc. One last name is Nathan Lamb from California. UCLA was kicking the tires but they were waiting on Jayen Daniels, who signed with ASU. Lamb threw for a ton of yards this all, has a quick release, good size and is a student of the game. Has offers from Oregon State, Nevada, SDSU, etc.

Good list Wade. Two comments. With Elam, didn't our main connection to him just retire? Not sure how interested he'll be in OSU without UFM. Also thought about deWeaver, but I'd imagine if he went through the process of going through the JC system, he'd want to come out, and be given the opportunity to start. I feel like he's used up too much eligibility to want to deal with the potential QB room at OSU. His offer list right now, is probably what suits him best. I also don't know if he fits the Ryan Day offense?

Agreed on both of those points but I think Taver Johnson was also involved with Elam. He's a longshot for sure. And you're right deWeaver is probably not the best fit and probably doesn't want to come to OSU and sit...just saw his name and thought it was interesting that he was back on the market,

I’m really interested to hear your thoughts on the Justin Fields situation. It seems to me to be a risky play but I don’t deny he’s exceptionally talented.

If you can get him, you take him. QBs like Fields don’t come around very often and very rarely fall in your lap. I know Day has a connection to one of Fields’ QB instructors or something like that. So the smoke is there. I say this knowing what it likely means for Martell which is a bummer because no one is higher on him than me. But you can’t pass on Fields. Fields is another guy Day could put in New York City like he did with Haskins. He’s that good.

So the year of the Tressel investigation and the year Urban stepped down. I don't find either of those things surprising.

I am really not that worried. They got a few difference makers on the team. I think but for the loss of Battle, it was a very successful recruiting year. Not worried at all. Plus, they can smell the top 10. No worries here.

Wonder what went wrong with Noah Cain. When it became clear he wasn't coming I just assumed that meant he was going somewhere in the South. Don't understand why if he was willing to go to Penn State with another top 10 back he wasn't more of a serious candidate for the class. Maybe it was a character concern a la Micah Parsons.

Could be styles. He did mention yesterday, when asked why he chose Ped St., he liked the style of offense they run and the running back being the focal point of the offense. Maybe he felt we were going away from that.

I think this offense is going to continue to be pass heavy with all the weapons, while continuing to see more dynamic athletes in the backfield and slot to create mismatches, not so much the 25-30 carry feature back. Too many worthy mouths to feed. Granted, he is now looking at splitting carries with another talented back in the same class at PSU so that kinda goes against my theory of being "the guy".
