2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

ant80

Think less, feel more.
So 11 already for 2017. Any chance of a 2018 commitment anytime soon? If so, who will it be? I know it's still early, but UFM has raised my expectations tremendously. In any case, I think it's about time we started this thread for 2018.

Go Bucks!

@ant80 The absolute most I've heard is 20, but we really won't know for months. That seems to be the max most of the sites are assuming at this point.

Much too early to tell. The safe bet is usually around 20 per year but you could also see a banner year with lots of early entries, attrition, etc. Until about 6 months from NLOID for that class is usually when I see a hard number start developing. Even after then you have number changes.

Something interesting I noticed when going through our DT offers for 2018... we've offered each of the top 7 DTs in the country, according to 247

#1 DT Taron Vincent
#2 DT Matthew Jones
#3 DT Leonard Taylor
#4 DT PJ Mustipher
#5 DT Josh Belk
#6 DT Austin Fontaine
#7 DT Tyler Friday

Me thinks that position is going to be a point of emphasis next year...

I think it'll be that way moving forward. OSU already has 2 4 stars for 2017 and being choosey if they get a 3rd. I don't think the staff wants to worry about depth in the middle

All this talk about 2017 5*s, let's not forget we are the favorites at this point for at least 5 more 5* players in the 2018 class...

QB Emory Jones (GA)
RB Lorenzo Lingard (FL)
RB Jaelen Gill (OH)
OL Jackson Carman (OH)
DT Taron Vincent (MD/FL)

Plus LB Palaie Gaoteote (NV) is on the doorstep of being a 5* on 247 composite

It's a good time to be a Buckeye

More than an hour since Wade reaffirming his commitment. I am bored. So I started to look ahead a little.

Projecting what this class will end up as. We have a number of offers to Ohio kids next year. Unless an Ohio kid with an Ohio State offer goes elsewhere under Urban Meyer, I am counting them in. So here's my projection.

QB
Emory Jones

RB
Brian Snead

Lorenzo Lingard/Ricky Slade/Zamir White

WR
L'Christian "Blue" Smith (OH)
(I expect 1 more)

TE
Jeremy Ruckert
Mustapha Muhammad

OL
Jackson Carman (OH)
(Given that we've only taken two (so far) in 2017, I expect 4 more)

DE
Leonard Taylor (OH)
Tyler Friday
(1 more)

DT
Taron Vincent
Aeneas Hawkins (OH)
P.J. Mustipher

LB
Chris Oats (OH)
Dallas Gant (OH)
Palaie Gaoteote
Teradja Mitchell

DB
Jaiden Woodbey
Houston Griffith
(1 more)

Ath
Jaelen Gill (OH)

That gives us 26 total. Probably too much though. What do you guys think?

Edit: Kraemer and Eichenberg went to NoD. I was wrong about Ohio kids with Ohio State offers going elsewhere under Urban. I am still bullish though.

Not trying to look too far ahead at the moment, but just updating some of the junior film on a few of the top '18 guys.

ESPN reporting that 2018 OL CJ Thorpe's father, a former PSU player, told Urban to stop recruiting his son a year ago.

Recruit's dad to Urban Meyer: Don't recruit my son

Offensive lineman C.J. Thorpe’s father has been hands off with his son’s recruitment, save for one school. Thorpe’s father, Chris, played football at Penn State and still holds onto some negative feelings for Ohio State.

So when coach Urban Meyer called the elder Thorpe to talk about his son’s recruitment, Chris bluntly told Meyer that it wasn’t worth his time to recruit the ESPN 300 prospect.

“Urban Meyer called my dad, and he told him he should stop recruiting me because it’s not going to happen,” Thorpe said. “After I got my Penn State offer, Urban called my dad and then he fell off the face of the earth. I didn’t know what happened and thought Ohio State was just not offering me, but I talked to my dad a year after the call, and he was like, ‘Yeah, I told him he can’t recruit you.’”

It doesn't even reference the reason why Mr. Thorpe didn't want Urban to recruit his son. It just says that his dad holds onto negative feelings. Anyone have any info?

What I find even more interesting is that he eliminated the most desirably program in the country (based on current recruiting trends) without notifying or consulting his son.

Thanks Dad. Your future, not mine.
