2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

How Ohio State turned hip-hop culture into a recruiting tool

Just before 9 a.m. on Monday morning, the Ohio State football program’s official Twitter account dispatched a message that likely went unseen by most followers.

With Chance the Rapper set to perform at Nationwide Arena Tuesday night, the Buckeyes wanted to let hip-hop’s hottest superstar know he was more than welcome to stop by the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Because of the way the Ohio State account formatted the tweet, you would have had to follow both the Buckeyes and Chance for the post to appear in your timeline. Ohio State, however, knew that its intended audience for the tweet likely already did both.

Chance — real name Chancelor Bennett — has yet to reply to the Buckeyes’ tweet, but whether or not the three-time Grammy winner actually appears at the Woody on Tuesday is somewhat irrelevant.

As Ohio State has increased its social media presence in recent years, the Buckeyes’ recruiting pitch has become more transparent. And as Monday’s post showed, a significant portion of Ohio State’s strategy has focused on its association to hip-hop culture.

“Our guys are just so creative,” Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith said at the Big Ten meetings on Monday. “We’ve got a group of young guys, they sit in a room and think this stuff up. We’re going to have Chance The Rapper coming [to Columbus] and they’re on social media trying to get Chance to come to the Woody Hayes [Athletic Center], have him walk through Woody Hayes and have pictures that [say], ‘Chance The Rapper was in the Woody Hayes.'”

It’s no coincidence that on Tuesday, Ohio State assistant linebacker coach Ryan Crow posted a graphic illustrating Columbus’ upcoming summer concert schedule.

I'm hoping that Gant's commit spurs the other top Ohio talent with offers to get into the fold. Would love to see the likes of Carman, Smith, Hawkins among others in sooner rather than later.
I can see Hawkins in by the end of the summer, but the other are national names and seem to like the recruiting process. Let them have their fun, and when its all said and done sign with the good guys

A HOTBED FOR TALENT, CINCINNATI-AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL IS SOME OF NATION'S BEST

82330_h_1.jpg,qitok=IYdtWrtp.pagespeed.ce.kp1jHQ-0T0.jpg

Over the last 10 years, four times has the state champion in Ohio’s largest division of high school football come from the Cincinnati area. In Ohio’s second-largest division, six times in the last 10 years the state champion came from the Queen City.

Quite simply, this is a place where some of the state’s best prep football resides.

“Our region is unbelievable,” says John Rodenberg, the two-time state-title winning head coach at Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. “It basically comes down to if you can survive the region.”

Easier said than done, of course, with so many powerhouse programs in the Cincinnati area.

Led by Rodenberg since 2008, Moeller is just one of the many perennial state-title contenders in this city. The Crusaders have nine state championships on their resumé, second all time in Ohio’s storied history.

OHIO STATE SIGNEES FROM CINCINNATI AREA UNDER URBAN MEYER
YEAR PLAYER HIGH SCHOOL
2017 Amir Riep Colerain
2017 Jerron Cage Winton Woods
2016 Jake Hausmann Moeller
2016 Drue Chrisman La Salle
2015 Justin Hilliard St. Xavier
2014 Sam Hubbard Moeller
2013 Jalin Marshall Middletown
2012 Adolphus Washington Taft

But there are also programs like St. Xavier, Elder, Colerain, La Salle, Anderson and more that make Cincinnati-area football some of the best, not only in Ohio but all of the country.

“I think it’s culture,” said Steve Specht, the three-time state-title winning head coach at St. Xavier. “You can look at every state and you can understand what the culture is. If you go to Indiana, it’s a basketball culture. Kentucky is the same way. In Ohio, there’s a culture when kids are growing up, especially in Southwestern Ohio, that it matters and it’s important."

“Football, right, wrong or indifferent, it’s important down here and it starts at the early ages.”

It shows not only in the quality teams the city produces every year but in the individual talent, as well.

Stuff like this has to be a "great recruiting tool" for Ohio State:

One year of starting at Ohio State can change a man's life. This time last year, Malik Hooker was a question mark to fans in search of a replacement of Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell.

Thursday, Hooker signed a rookie contract with the Indianapolis Colts, who drafted him with the 15th overall selection of the 2017 NFL Draft.

According to spotrac.com, the four-year deal is worth a projected $12,599,908 and includes a $7,303,570 signing bonus.

If the '18 class finishes how 11W has predicted.……seriously……that's a mind boggling amount of talent taking the field with the '16 and '17 classes. And of course, '19 is not gonna drop off either. If Urb hangs on to quality assistants like he has now or replaces with similar talent then I just don't see how tOSU is left out of a 4 team playoff very often. It would be surprising NOT to make it to the final 4. That's a realistic but bizarre thing to consider.

I'm pretty sure the recruits know who Chance the Rapper is.

That's good.

I used to listen to rap music and I have an 8 year old so I have to listen to some non desirable radio stations but I've never heard of that guy. I guess I know less about music these days than I thought (which already wasn't much.)

I thought they were touting the guy like "hey, come see the concert of the guy who sells his cds on High Street!"

Personally, I'm a fan of Led Zeppelin the Singers and Instrument Players but I think they chose to shorten their name by dropping the obvious part.

If this influx of talent continues, I predict our 1-2 loss "down years" we'll still be in NYE6 bowls, kind of like the 2015 season. That's kind of crazy to imagine.

If I didnt have a 16yo step daughter, I wouldn't have known him or half of the rappers now. But Chance is actually very talented, and positive. Won a Grammy for first ever streaming album an has invested countless amounts of time and money to improving conditions in bad neighborhoods in his native Chicago

It's cool. It's my fault for thinking I had even the slightest clue these days. I thought, "I haven't even heard of this guy and he's being used to sell recruits. This is like saying come here because we have cable tv!" Guess I was wrong.

FIVE LONG-SHOT TARGETS OHIO STATE COULD POTENTIALLY LAND IN 2018

82410_h.jpg,qitok=DborQHAV.pagespeed.ce.yMWduYdUBL.jpg

With seven months until the newly established early signing period, Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class is currently on track to surpass 2017's haul. The Buckeyes hold commitments from 10 prospects, with all but one among the top eight players at their respective positions.

Their 96.34 average recruit ranking in second-to-none, even topping last year's absurd score of 94.47, which was pound-for-pound the best class of all time. That number could reach even more outrageous heights, too, with commitments from several of the top undecided prospects in the country.

Ohio State had some key additions down the stretch that put last year's class over the top, including five-star linebacker Baron Browning, five-star cornerback Jeffrey Okudah and four-star junior college transfer cornerback Kendall Sheffield. And while each has their own unique story of how they ended up in Columbus, their inclusion in the 2017 recruiting class was far from a sure thing — or even talked about until late in the process.

In that same vein, we know who the staff's top targets are for the Class of 2018. Of course, not all of them will choose the Buckeyes, so here's a look at some long-shot or under-the-radar prospects who could eventually sign with the Buckeyes if the chips fall the right way.

FIVE-STAR OFFENSIVE GUARD JAMAREE SALYER
Much like Okudah, Jamaree Salyer's name has been linked to Ohio State on several occasions since the Buckeyes extended a scholarship offer last July. He attended and had great things to say about the Buckeyes' double-overtime win over Michigan in November, but his proximity to Clemson and Georgia have put the two programs in the lead for the time being.

That said, five-star dual-threat quarterback commit Emory Jones has singled out his fellow Georgian as someone he'd like to see join him in the Scarlet and Gray. If the staff were to shift its focus away from or miss out on prospects like Fredrick "Juice" Scruggs and Verdis Brown, the full-court press for Salyer could be on.
