tOSU Recruiting Discussion

How about a "guess the class" post so we can look back in 11 months and laugh about how wrong I was?

QB- Jarrett Guarantano
RB/H-Back-Kareem Walker, George Hill, Demario McCall
WR- Austin Mack, Justin Layne
TE/Big Slot- Jake Hausmann, Kierre Hawkins, Luke Farrell
OL- Tyler Gerald, Liam Eichenberg, Jack Wohlabaugh

DT- Malik Barrow, NaQuan Jones, Prince Sammons
DE- Jonathan Cooper, Terrell Hall, Nick Bosa, Josh King
LB- Brendan Ferns, Carter Coughlin
DB- Damar Hamlin, Nigel Warrior, Zech McPhearson

Probably short one WR and have one too many OL/DL but seems like there are a lot of "can't say no" types at DL this year and I think the same could happen at WR next year. So maybe they go a little light at WR in 2016 and really load up in 2017 (while going light on DL).

DB is the toughest position to predict. There's not a single guy I'd bet on being in the class at this point but a dozen guys who are high on the Buckeyes who would be good fits. Also feels like a spot where we could see some "late bloomers" emerge and blow past the guys we are talking about now on the OSU board.

Not sure. If I see a need for three rbs in one class. Even if they are all great. (Unless one could play other positions)

They can.

McCall is a Jalin Marshall type who probably ends up at H-back (which is why I listed RB/H-back).

Hill probably sticks at RB but is in the mold of Curtis Samuel or a bigger Dontre Wilson who is a speedster that can do some other things.

Walker is the pure RB like Zeke Elliott.

Honestly it's a little late to do predictions as most of the guys have already tipped their hand as to where they are leaning or could be silent verbals. There's only really questions on who's the 3rd reciever, 2nd LB, 3rd OL, the DTs and DB's although I do think Rene could be leaning our way as of right now. At DT there's a lot of offers out but beyond pursuing the top guys I think the staff is waiting to see if guys like landers emerge this year. DB is basically in the same boat as DT, pursue the top guys and wait on the camp cycle and senior seasons to play out to see if any guys can earn offers through hard work and improvement.

I disagree, tipping of hats means nothing. It's not even close to late, matter of fact it's incredibly early in the 2016 recruiting class. I remember this time last year guys like SKL, Damien Harris, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Josh Sweat among others seemed to be "tipping their hats" in OSU's direction as well... Matter of fact guys like Torrance Gibson, KJ Hill, Isiah Prince, tipped their hats to other schools. 2015 NSD was only a month ago, tons of information is still coming out about kids. @tlinc made a valiant effort at an extremely early class prediction. I personally can't agree or disagree with it at this point, so far it looks decent to me based on our limited info

I think the DEs, last H-Back, 1st 2 WRs, 1st LB, 2nd OL are easy to see right now. The numbers beyond those 15 guys are hard to predict at this stage and honestly we haven't seen the guys emerge like landers or berry. Sweat never tipped his hat in OSU's direction, he was there to watch VT and Fitzpatrick really didn't either and was pretty much all bama once he visited there. Just saying that this class is much more easily defined by the fast start and coming off a national championship than last years. I'm just saying i can look at his list and pretty much confirm we'll see at least 7 of those guys become buckeyes. Yeah things can change in the recruiting process all the time, it's just this years class is much easier to predict. DT and DB are really hard to predict at this point.

I hear what you're saying, and you're correct, there's a number of guys that can be penciled into this class already. But we all know we're just pulling out of the stop of this years recruiting roller coaster. Keeping the guys we have committed is just as hard as going after other guys. Our NC will certainly help, but going after the OOS guys always gets dicey. And looking at our 2015 class, almost half the class were guys that this time last year we thought we wouldn't get or had little info on(Alexander, Hill, Landers, Prince, Nor wood, etc).

Couple other recruiting thoughts...

-Seems like the Haskins ship has probably sailed for OSU (based on lack of contact) and there wasn't a real clear Plan B if the Buckeyes were to lose Guarantano to Rutgers or Tennessee. With Tristen Wallace decommitting from Texas Tech, I think he ends up being the #2 guy on the board for the Buckeyes and they really pick up their recruitment there. Hopefully Guarantano can get to Columbus in March and make his decision one way or the other this spring. OSU will either lock up their top guy in JG or move onto Wallace who is very impressive in his own right. He's built like a LB but has nice speed and moves. He would be a bear for opposing teams to handle in the read option game with a stud RB like Walker or Sibley next to him. He also is pretty good passing the ball. He doesn't have that silky smooth release of Guarantano and I think that's what's separating the two, but would still be very, very happy with either one of these two.

-Seems like spots are getting tight at DE. Bosa obviously has 0% chance of losing his spot. But may only be one spot for King/Robertson. With Robertson looking to commit the first week of June, hopefully the Buckeyes can get a really good feel for what King wants to do when he visits this month. Like with the two QBs, both of King and Robertson are very good and national recruits (would love to have either one) but I'm guessing King ranks just a little higher on the OSU board. In a normal year, these would be automatic takes but things are going so ridiculously well that we may have to pass on a high 4 star DE with big-time potential this year if both want in.

-I know the new Florida WR offer Stove is very highly ranked nationally but I wonder if he is more of a backup plan for Demario McCall. They seem like very similar players and I don't really see room for both of them. Again, when trying to put together a best guess as to the final class, this seemed like a situation where there's two great players but probably only room for one due to how hot OSU is running in recruiting.

Really interested to see how DL recruiting shakes out. 4 DE's would be the absolute max and probably only 3 but Cooper, Hall, and Bosa are for sure DE's. I think either of Sammons, King, and/or Robertson could very well be DT's (Sammon could be an OT as well), so maybe we could take 1-2 of them and then a true DT...of course Gary is the prime target and he will always have a spot. Then the only realistic possibilities remaining as of now appear to be Onwenu and Naquan Jones, so I think it is very conceivable to see many of the aforementioned guys find spots.

I think with this staff, after the Deshaun Watson debacle, they will always have a plan B at QB. Whether its WAllace or JawAn Pass from GA, or somebody we haven't heard about yet.
Though spots are tight for the DL, they were also tight for the OL last year and we found a way to get in 6. I can see the staff pulling in 5-6 in the end and setting out positions in the end. Championships are won in the trenches, and I would like LJsr to have as many bullets in his chamber as possible. I think the staff can find a way to get King and Robertson if they want in. A class of Hall, Cooper, Bosa, King, Robertson, Sammons and Onwenu or Jones would be phenomenal. With Sammons, King, Onwenu/Jones, Robertson possibly playing DT(and like has been stated, Sammons could be a OT). Bring in the best and sort of positions later.
Stove is a far fetched backup plan. McCall can still be considered favored into this class, nothing has been said otherwise from him.

I mis-worded that. I didn't mean the OSU coaches didn't have a plan B at QB. Like you said they likely have a very long list of different options. Meant more that it wasn't clear to us what the realistic Plan B was but maybe Wallace ends up being that guy.

I agree with you that they can take 6 DL and make it work with the numbers. Maybe even 7 if one of them is Sammons (who is probably better categorized as ATH). I still don't think that they really want more than 4 of the Bosa/Cooper/Hall/King/Robertson group though. Sounds like Barrow could be in soon as a smaller DT and I think they'd like to add a second DT to the class who would be a wider body type (290+ right now who can play at 300+). My guess then is 4 DE (Bosa, Cooper, Hall and one more), 2 DTs and possibly Sammons as an ATH on top of the other 6.

I don't see Robertson as a DT. He is more of a skilled athlete (he played WR and TE as a soph) and is only 230 right now. He also played LB in a recent 7-on-7 tournament and was athletic enough to do it. I'm also not sure about King as a future DT. He did just win a state championship in wrestling but he did it at 220.

I agree that 4 DEs is likely the max so I don't see them being able to take both Robertson and King. I'm not sure who they like better but if it's a tie they'll likely take Robertson given his relationship with Mack.

As for DTs, OSU has backed off some on Onwenu. Other than Sammons, the most likely DT right now is Barrow who has hinted he could commit when he's in Columbus for the Spring Game. Kyree Campbell is another guy to keep an eye on but his recruitment has been all over the place.
