tOSU Recruiting Discussion

The Sweet 16 class will be nothing like last years recruiting. The slow start hurt Osu's momentum and didn't allow it to have many recruits building relationships with other recruits. The national championship happened too late in the game as it's a lot harder to pluck kids late in the process. Gustin's USC bond was already too strong. This year class is primed to make a clean sweep of ohio and New Jersey early in the process and have tons of early momentum. The NC will do a lot more work in this years class than it did in last years.

Agreed. I believe the slow start was due to 3 losses in 4 games.

And the 2015 tOSU National Championship will mean Saban no longer gets the #1 class.

Let Bama keep having their recruiting titles. They've had the #1 class the past few years and it still asnt equaled a title. I'm fine if our classes continue in the top 5 as long as they fit our coaches criteria. Our NC title speaks louder than their imaginary crooting title

How I feel. Texas for example had recruiting classes that were top ranked year in and year out. Didn't equate to anything. Its better to get players that fit your system/scheme rather than go with how many 5 star players you can fit in your system.

My early projection:

QB: Jared Guarantano (near lock, should be in soon)
RB: Kareem Walker (might have a fight to keep him though)
RB: George Hill (could be a pivot, depends on McCall I think)
Pivot: McCall (too electric to use at DB, matter of when and not if)
WR: Austin Mack (in extremely good shape here)
WR: Justin Layne (when, not if)
WR: Nate Craig (we're going to keep coming and he is wide open...but if not him, a big name like Victor from down south)
TE: Jake Hausmann (huge pickup)
TE: Luke Farrell (when, not if)
TE/H: Kierre Hawkins (great athlete)
OL: Tyler Gerald (very excited about him as a future guard)
OL: Liam Eichenberg (not a lock by any means but I like our odds a little more than ND right now)
OL: Jauan Williams (really like our odds but it will be a fight nationally)
OL: Michael Jordan (very high on us...I think the number is definitely 4 or lower since we have 6 in '15 with Prince)
DE: Nick Bosa (when, not if)
DE: Jonathan Cooper (done deal)
DE: Auston Robertson (near lock, I think he is in this class by the end of the spring)
DT: Rashan Gary (will be an absolute battle but we have a ton in our favor...immediate PT, two of his best Jersey friends likely in, and a great relationship with our entire staff, particularly LJ Sr)
DT: Prince Sammons (heavily in our favor and I suspect this will not take long)
DT: Michael Onwenu (may be a matter of when, not if...I was not impressed with his film but he is highly rated and the staff seems to like him)
LB: Brendan Ferns (when, not if and on a top 100 guy)
LB: Sandwisch (I personally like him the best in Ohio beyond Ferns...but this is a shot in the dark...I don't think we get Borland or Coughlin but we are right in it...expecting more offers to go out here as well)
DB: Jarred Mayden (need a top-notch safety in this class and he is VERY high on us...won't be easy but I like where we are at)t
DB: Levonta Taylor (maybe wishful thinking but we are in the mix heavily here)
DB: Patrice Renee (another guess but he does like us a lot)
DB: Tyreace Speight (really like his game, think he gets an offer this summer)

- Incredible class on paper and only a few of those guys may be stretches.

This class appears to be headed for greatness. With talent already in the fold, the staff can be picky. Here's my prediction of how the class will be pursued.
QB - Guarantano seems to be the guy here and is only a matter of time. This could lead to landing other NJ talent.
RB - Probably the most talented class of RBs I can ever remember with McCall in the fold. Walker is the true RB of the 3, while hill and McCall can play some slot, H-back and RB.
WR - This is a big year for the position and Layne and Mack are just a matter of time. The staff will likely swing big for a 3rd reciever in the south.
TE - Already one of the best TE classes I can remember and honestly I don't know if the coaches will take a 3rd. The local talent and interest may lead us to a 3rd.
OL - Coming off the amazing haul last year, I only see about 3 or 4 in the class and the staff can be really picky here.
DE - Honestly the staff can't whiff on this position. This will be a home run DE class because there is so much interest and talent out there. With the talent out there the coaches could take 4 here (Robertson, Bosa, King, Sammons, and maybe Kareem) cooper already on board.
DT - Biggest need here, Gary is at the top of the board and this number should reach 3.
LB - Not a lot of need here. Ferns is in, staff will likely swing big from here. Staff will probably take 2 or 3 here.
DB - Big need here! Cover corners are hard to find and the staff will likely take 4 or 5 here
ST - staff takes one here.

We are potentially looking at the top class here, depends on how the staff does at OL and CB.

I agree with all this, but Bama's outstanding recruiting pretty much guarantees we'll be seeing them in the top 10 (and likely the playoffs) for years to come.

Top notch defensive linemen should be the highest priority. I would like to see at least six.

Just putting this out there. I just don't see Sammons as anything other than an OT......that's his natural fit.

Body type, I have thought the same thing. But he has enough bend and athleticism to play DL. If not though, I will gladly take another Baldwin who turns into a stud OT.

With his flexibility though, I would like to see 6 other pure DL in this class and only 3 pure OL. Ideally our 6 DL are Cooper, Bosa, Robertson, Gary, Onwenu, and someone else. 4 of the 5 are next to in imo (only Gary will be a fight), so I am hoping the last 1-2 can be brought in with some work. And I think they will...we look good for Gary and I think Shaq Smith is another guy we can snag. Nonetheless, we need to see a healthy dose of DL come in for '16.

I've found these types of list are nearly pointless as there are dozens of names we don't even know about yet but in this case the staff really seems to have laid the groundwork already for the 2016 class.

QB - Jarrett Guarantano is the man and it's a matter of when not if.
RB - Kareem Walker and George Hill can play RB. Hill could be a pivot guy. Demario McCall is perfect for the pivot/slot role and I expect him to be a Buckeye.
WR - I agree Austin Mack and Justin Layne are the top targets and see them both picking OSU at this point. Might see a third guy if it's someone like Nate Craig-Myers, Sam Bruce, Donnie Corley or Binjimen Victor. Watch for Ahmir Mitchell here when Guarantano commits and he and Walker start to recruit other NJ talent.
TE - Can they fit all three? I think they can. Luke Farrell, Jake Hausmann and Kierre Hawkins are the trifecta.
OL - Tyler Gerald and Liam Eichenberg are the top priorities. Can be selective taking a third national guy. Staff seems to really like Michael Menet out of PA, Thiyo Lukusa out of MI and will of course stay in touch with Tommy Kraemer. They really need a center so it will be interesting to see if they think they got one in 2015...maybe Jurkovic?
DE - Need a homerun here and luckily Nick Bosa is in the on deck circle. Jonathon Cooper is in and Auston Robertson has talked about wanting to play with Mack.
DT - Gary is a top talent but I don't see him at OSU. Michael Onwenu is a target and I expect more names to emerge here because there aren't a lot so far. Prince Sammons could fit in here.
LB - Not a huge need so I see them going after one guy to with Brendan Ferns. Expect more names to emerge here to go with Tuf Borland and Carter Coughlin.
CB - Needs some pure corners as Josh Norwood and Denzel Ward are the only true corners I see in the '15 class although EGW could be as well. Really like Levonta Taylor and Jared Mayden early. Damar Hamlin has visited a couple of times.
S - Only need superstars here. Nigel Warrior out of Georgia is a kid I really like. Couple of good safety prospects down in Texas too in Brandon Jones and Eric Monroe.
K/P - Possible we see a punter in this class to replace Johnston. No need for a kicker with Nuernberger only headed into his second year.

QB 1 + RB 3 + WR 3 + TE 3 + OL 3 + DE 3 + DT 2 + LB 2 + CB 2 + S 2 + P 1 = 25

also as a side note I think the defensive line GA (Vince Oghobaase, who was a stud at Duke) does an outstanding whip.

I thought Urban's most revealing answer at his press conference yesterday was in response to a question about the "pace" of recruiting. Urban's response indicated he is very much in favor of having a more delayed timetable. He mentioned coaches should have a "right" to see how guys play senior year before making a decision on the offer and said that the earlier the timetable is pushed forward in terms of offer/commitment, the more often coaches would experience "buyer's remorse" in regards to the guys they have in their classes.

He also mentioned though that he and the staff have had to adjust from the way they operated in their past OSU classes to meet the expectations in terms of when offers are made in Ohio. Basically, he said they know they have to move sooner on some guys because if they don't "get in the game" early, they end up being left off of a player's list.

So the staff is in a tough (but also enviable) position of having a bunch of guys that want in, but a desire to slow play many of those players until they can see them at camp and/or as seniors. Urban said they could fill up their class with good players tomorrow because that many guys want in, but that he wants to hold off on doing that as much as possible. It's a delicate balancing act. They don't want to turn off players that want to be Buckeyes, but they also don't want to fill up the class my June 1st either.

Anyway, with specific regards to the 2016 OSU recruiting class, it makes me wonder if some guys with offers (Ferns, Layne, Sammons, Eichenberg, Robertson, Coughlin, Borland, etc.) are actually being pushed for their commitments today. Or whether Urban is hoping these recruitments play out longer. He wants as much info as possible on these guys and how they develop before accepting commitments. He also said he always wants to have some scholarships in reserve in January to target late bloomers and other guys who they end up having a shot at late.
