tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Where does everyone expect this class to land number wise? I like the class but I look at the current scholly breakdown and I see 20 to the NFL tops, and that's with a few guys leaving that I would rather stay. With who I see going to the NFL right now it's closer to 17 when we have 12 seniors, one empty spot, and 4 guys who are expected to leave. Probably another 2-3 will demonstrate they are NFL ready and declare, plus a little attrition.
I see this class at 22 and the very most.

When you name attrition, do you also take into account unexpected injuries? That cut several guys down last year.

4 - Cardale, Elliott, Bosa, Bell are all gone.
1 - Thomas is probably gone.
2 - Apple, Lee could be gone.
3 - Price, Elflein, Marshall probably stay.

I don't get into rumors and speculation about less happy departures, but there will be a few (some injury, some otherwise). I think it's pretty easy to find room for a 24-25 man class in 2016. I think it's very tricky to find room for the 2017 class, especially because there won't be any Taivon Jacobs situations there (at least not with the studs so far)

Could throw Cam Johnston on that list, too, but I think the main guys are Cardale, Elliott, Bosa, Bell, Thomas and Lee. With all 6 of them leaving that gets you to 18 total openings for 2016. I don't know how you can get to 24 or 25 but I've underestimated attrition in the past. And OSU seems to be recruiting as if they have 24 available.

We have a huge sophmore class, and a lot of those guys will be stars in 2016, and a few will shine this year. Not to mention a few from the freshman class will be eligible to leave. Hard to predict 2 years out, I mean most of the stars of last year weren't even in the 2 deep 2 years before that. There will be room in 2017. The problem with great recruiting classes is that guys tend to leave early. LSU and Auburn have found that out the hard way; struggling to find 10 wins after years of top-5 or top-10 classes. That extra year (or 2) of development is what levels the playing field a lot between top recruiters and the MSU and Wiskys of the world.
Every year at the start Bama is a question mark because they lose so many guys to the NFL, and now it's starting to show and I think it's causing Saban a lot more stress as he's been trying to keep up with a junior class exodus for about 4 years straight.
The 2017 season will be our first time that hits us.

Scholarship count as of right now based on verbals:

92 - Fall 2016

5 safe departures - Elliott, Bosa, Cardale, Bell, one of Thomas/Apple/etc. It's easy to find 2-4 more spots, including verbals. Not my style but it's how it's done these days.

86 - Fall 2017

Already off the books (Elliott, Bosa, Cardale, Bell, Thomas). Those don't help you here

Potential scholarship help, if they stay for 2016 but leave before 2017:

Apple, Lee, Marshall, Elflein, Price, McMillan.

Obviously there will be more names that emerge, more injuries, more attrition to make it work, it's just interesting to follow right now.

This is how I think the 2016 Class will look on signing day. If the pieces fall together like this, the Buckeyes will finish with 24 commitments and have an average star rating of 3.92 and a composite rating of .9293 according to 247sports Composite.

QB: Tristen Wallace (#125)
RB: Kareem Walker (#29)
RB: George Hill (#98)
ATH: Demario McCall (#41)
WR: Austin Mack (#120)

WR: Donnie Corley (#115)
ATH: Kierre Hawkins (#297)
TE: Jake Hausmann (#93)
TE: Luke Farrell (#147)
OL: Michael Jordan (#166)
OL: Tyler Gerard (#143)
OL: Jack Wohlabaugh (#412)
P: Drew Chrisman (#874)

DT: Antwuan Jackson (#45)
DT: Malik Barrow (#294)
DE: Nick Bosa (#7)
DE: Jonathon Cooper (#52)
DE: Terrell Hall (#142)
LB: Tuf Borland (#270)

CB: Damar Hamlin (#145)
CB: Kareem Felder (#786)
S: Jordan Fuller (#121)
S: Andrew Pryts (#315)
S: Wayne Davis (#311)
This is exactly what my list looks like right now, with the exception of WR. I see Crowell, Victor, or some other receiver that we're not currently talking about instead of Corley. A stellar class that we should all appreciate. We're so fortunate to be experiencing this golden age.

Guess: George Hill

Thoughts?
Birm alluded to a chain reaction in response to the Hall decommit.

Leading theory is current MSU verbal and friend of Hall, RB Abdul Adams, would follow Hall to Bama, which opens up a RB spot for the Spartans class with George Hill as the obvious top target given the fact that OSU might want him at S (which he may or may not be a huge fan of) and his close ties to Larry Scott.

It makes sense, but it doesn't seem like Abdul Adams is a Bama calibre RB and I know a lot of insiders thought it was a very good sign when Hill showed up at FNL which potentially put to rest the earlier concern about his status in the class.

Either way, we'll find out eventually. I'm not particularly concerned at this point. Signing day is too far away and this staff is filled with recruiting savants. Things will work out.
