tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I think we'll see higher amount of scholarship players at QB because I think Meyer wants a firewall of talent at the position. Just as he wants multiple coordinators on both sides of the ball to guard against losing a coach to another job, I think he wants to have extra depth at QB to guard against losing players at that position. There were a lot of factors that caused his program at Florida to decline, and one of them was that he didn't have a functional QB once Tebow left, thanks to the fact that Cam Newton got himself kicked out of Gainesville. I think he wants to try to be in a position to maintain excellence in the face of the unexpected.

Also, looking back on the years before Meyer arrived, I appreciate that he makes QB recruiting a priority every year. Think back through the succession of Buckeye QBs. Troy Smith was arguably the last Buckeye QB to win the job after having spent more than a season in school. Boeckman took over for him pretty much by default. Pryor took his job as a true freshman. Bauserman took over once Pryor left for reasons that I don't think anybody can support or understand, and quickly yielded to another true freshman, Braxton Miller. Miller got hurt, and the next guy up is another freshman, JT Barrett. This program is starting to get to a point where they may be in a position for years to come to have the next man up at QB be a guy is a sophomore or junior, who has had a chance to learn and develop before getting thrown to the wolves. I think that's a worthwhile way to run the program, even if it means that there are seemingly a couple extra guys at the position. You're playing with fire if you only recruit a legit starting QB once every two to three years.

Oh, ok. In that case you're counting a walk-on. I don't think we have to worry about Luke Morgan counting against the 85

maybe I'm reading this wrong "Luke Morgan is in his second season with the football program after initially joining the team in June 2013 as an invited walk-on as a true freshman ... he is an OSU Scholar-Athlete who is majoring in finance" is now on scholarship and currently counts.. yes/no? same phrase appears on numerous team members.. Chris Rock, Jacoby Boren, Joe Burger, Zeke, Bryce Haynes.. etc

^^^ This!!!
When Tebow moved on, Meyer was essentially screwed, and could've to the many in the public had all of his success tied to one Qb(a la Harbrau). A number of highly rated QBs were recruited to UF, but never fit his system. And you can only find out who will best fit the system by recruiting guys to the team. Relying on future talent to come in is like every recruit coming to college, a crap shoot. This is the first time I can ever remember that OSU is actually having sustained QB success and it's not wrapped around only 1 QB. We've been very lucky that we haven't had major injuries to guys like Troy and Terrelle or our program would've been set back majorly! We got lucky that Braxton was able to essentially keep OSU at 6-7, because the season could've been much worse. And that honestly set him back maturity wise as a QB, because he had to rely on being an athlete because the O line wasn't the best. The team now has QB depth, and that needs to be sustained, and that can only be achieved by bringing in a QB yearly, and the best will play

It states scholar-athlete but doesn't make any reference to him being on scholarship. I also do not believe either Chris Rock or Joe burger are on scholarship.

I think "scholar-athlete" is just a fancy way of calling someone a student athlete. Which I wouldn't consider being on scholarship as a prerequisite. Do walk-ons study tape? Practice? Dress for games? Occasionally play? If so they are an athlete. Do they attend classes? If so they see a scholar (student). Boom. Scholar(student) -athlete.

I know Urban Meyer inherited Miller and Jones at OSU but Tebow, Newton, Miller, Jones, Barrett........wow, with many chapters left to be written.

Does anyone know anyone in their real lives as good at what they do as Urban Meyer is at what he does?

It's amazing.
